Nope. We need to select Breece Hall in TSW poll first and Virgil usually lets that run for some time

2022 Free Agency - Around the NFL Thread

No but he could sign "nobody wants me for big bucks so if it has to be cheap at least be it with a contender deal". I still doubt he would come back here though. -
Bills match Bears Offer Sheet for Ryan Bates, 4 yr deal
No_Matter_What replied to nato7412's topic in The Stadium Wall
Cmon Hap, that's really simple It comes from Bates, he was previously in the books for 2.4M and now he is not. Replace him with 0.9M guy and there you go - we have 3.8M (had 2.3M) before. I think it should be enough for Bates, even if his cap hit is 4.5M we only need 3.6M of "new" cap space. What bothers me more is Star, since they still have him at 5.2M and it doesn't makes sense. It is the number for post 1 June cut, but if he is designated as post 1 June cut, then he should be still in the books right now, no? -
Cmon, you are picking for Texans, not Patriots
-
Call me crazy but I think Lions will in reality take QB. And whether its a good move really depends on comparison of Willis/Pickett vs top guys expected to enter next draft, which I have no clue about. I think they will be picking top5 next year too so they can go either way.

Where did you take the bolded? They don't have most cap money next year, they are actually 16th, they only have $32M (most money have Bears, over $128M), and all whilst have only 22 players under contract. They have actually one of the worst situations from all teams. It doesn't mean they are doomed, I am just saying that what you wrote is way off. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/2023/

Oops sry meant 29. Tankathon is the best they are up to date.

@Virgil You have small mistake at @27. It's Chiefs now.

2022 Free Agency - Around the NFL Thread
No_Matter_What replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
Part of me agrees, but on the other hand we need our young DEs to grow and they need snaps to do so. Right now we have Miller, Rousseau, Basham, Epenesa and Lawson. So unless Lawson is just a camp body or unless they give up on Epenesa and trade him I don't see Hughes coming back. Interesting. -

So if I understand if correctly, none of these former Bills players has a new contract so far: Jerry Hughes Mario Addison Daryl Williams Cole Beasley Star Lotulelei A.J. Klein Emmanuel Sanders I wonder how many of them won't play a snap in NFL anymore. -

Ohoho here it is! I won't sign up since I don't watch college but I love these TBD mocks. 3 rounds are amazing. Thanks Virgil.

AZ cuts Jordan Phillips - now signed by Bills
No_Matter_What replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall
Sportrac is still not 100% clear on Phillips but they added a void yead for him in 2023 for $1,25M. That is consistent with what overthecap has quite a long time already. It seems that his actual contract is really $5M/1year. That is quite a lot (esp. compared to his buddy Shaq Lawson). Let's hope he produces. -

No_Matter_What replied to nato7412's topic in The Stadium Wall
They just restructured Morse in a way which among other things increased his dead cap in 2023 to $5M. I seriously doubt that he is not in 2023 plan. -

This is really a weird logic. It's not like Beane haven't signed Williams and Feliciano at the first place. This is not a knock on Beane. Just saying that if he is a wizard now for this he is less of a wizard for what he had done in 2021. I'll eat my socks if I used correct English tenses in previous sentences btw -

Sounds good. Still need complete numbers. However, it is clear that they must believe in him a lot, since this sounds like there isn't a good out after first year. I still think we should draft OL in rounds 2-4. The higher the better. -

Not possible. I heard from a reliable poster here that he is a Bear! Really curious about the terms. If it is 4 years this will be a recurring thread theme one way or another. Welcome Ryan "Rick" Bates, new Bills legend! -
Alpha did you read what I wrote? I didn't argue with you I agree with you that they are weaker then they were and I don't like what they did over past years. I only wanted to add that I'd like to be able to quantify that "kicking the can down the road" thing, since Bills started this year and it is very likely that they will continue next year. So I'd like to gain some knowledge where is the turning point from being fine to do so and where does Saints road start (if it makes sense) Yeah this is spot on. Thing is that we started mortgaging a little bit this year, and I am almost sure we will go farther next year. I am not saying we shouldn't, just stating the fact. I think you asked me before how much - I don't know yet, I didn't see any relevant metric for this, and I will try to come up with my own once the draft is over and dust settles at Sportrac. But for sure we already have worse cap situation for 2023 than we had for 2022 a year ago (again, I am not saying I would not do that if I was Beane, it is somewhat inevitable for top teams).

You don't draft a guard in the 1st ... or do you?
No_Matter_What replied to Thurman#1's topic in The Stadium Wall
I understand where you coming from and I tend to generally agree. It is similar argument which people (including me) use against drafting RB in the first round. But I don't think that argument is fair without some context. You obviously choose Allen but we are not talking QBs here. We are talking guard vs valuable nonQB positions like LT, CB or DE. Then the question is how valuable is top guard vs top CB or DE. To answer it I would like some serious analyses. Because you can say what you said about Nelson, but I can say the same about Garrett, T.J.Watt, J.J.Watt, Nick Bosa, Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack, etc, just to include those who aren't busts. Have they won anything? And some of them are playing on teams which consistently lose or are consistently mediocre. Also discussing which guys from the list are good and which are busts (and ratio between them) is only relevant if you do the same exercise for all other positions. Just from the top of my head there were 6 CBs taken in first round of 2020 draft. As far as I know at least 4 of them are already considered as busts or are quickly approaching that status. And nobody says that drafting CB in the first round is a bad idea. So, my point main is - is there any relevant study which positions actually contribute to teams' success and how much? And is the gap between OG and lets say CB that big that you "always" take Kyle Gordon and not Zion Johnson? I don't know, but I doubt that it has obvious answer. -
Because people see that they were $60M over the cap, now they are $30M under the cap, don't see a lot of lost players (i.e. consider their roster basically the same) and make a conclusion that cap space is a myth. It is the same principle when people are calling Beane a "wizard" when he makes cap space by restructuring Milano or keeps Von Millers cap hit at $5M this year. Whereas it obviously isn't a myth, Saints lost some players and they are definitely borrowing from the future and Beane is just doing something trivial what every other GM can do and does. Problem I see that nobody exactly knows to what extent they (Saints, and at some extent Bills already this year) mortgaged the future. At least I don't remember seeing any quality article or something like that. I mean I can see all the data on Sportrac too, I think I understand all the basics about cap space, I understand that they restructured all deals, that all base salaries are now minimal at the expense of the future (prorated restructure bonus), but I don't remember seeing any quality analytics when will this eventually catch them - something like when the ratio between dead cap / restructures to total cap space next year will be worse than X then Y happens or so. I'll try to analyze that myself after the draft (when Sportrac has all preseason data), but I am not sure I have enough data (I'd need some previous seasons probably) and enough brains to come to anything meaningful.

Gunner's 2022 Mock Draft (v3 and FINAL - p.17!!)
No_Matter_What replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
Problem with Kinnard in Gunner's mock is that we seem to be in no man's land in 2nd round overall, esp. if we draft WR in the 1st round. I thinkit is very likely that we'd like to draft CB, WR and IOL early, but as it follows from Gunner's mock as well as other boards I've seen there are no CBs/IOL who match value with our 2nd round pick. There might possibly be some WRs that's why I am saying that it gets much worse if we draft WR in the first round. Therefore, Zion Johnson/WR/CB or Booth (Gordon, Elam, other CB they like)/WR/IOL seems to be the way to go. Possible solution could be moving around the board. However, as discussed above, it probably won't be easy to trade down in first, and it won't be cheap to trade up in the second - for example our 4th round pick (which I wouldn't be happy to give up anyway) can maybe get us from pick 57 to pick 52 or so, which is not much. Or do you guys see any players who could be available at 57 and you'd be really happy to take them? There is always an option to take completely other positions, but the way it looks now I'd be shocked if they didn't try to draft IOL and CB in first 3 rounds and I also think they would love some top talent at WR.
