  1. Watching guys like Tannehill and Cousins win playoff games behind a solid run game you can't help but be a little jealous about the way they built their offenses. Josh was asked to do more. So was Watson and he stood up to the challenge, but it's still a lot to ask of Josh both at this stage of his career and of his current skill set to be out there finishing 58 plays including runs, throws and sacks.

If you want the truth, read any other team's message board.  Every fan without a dog in the fight can see the obvious, and that is that Allen was not just bad.  He was a clown out there.  He fumbled once by just straight dropping the ball.  Very nearby fumbled again a split second after his knee touched, threw two consecutive passes that should have been intercepted for touchdowns, threw a ridiculous jump ball to a freaking fullback in double coverage, had another interception dropped by a DB, made the most ridiculous lateral I've ever seen, and took an intentional grounding  penalty that ultimately cost the game.

Yeah he made his typical 3-4 spectacular plays that only a few QBs in the league can make, but he simply can't be counted on not to crap the bed.  If Houston had been able to capitalize on half of his terrible mistakes, this game would have been a blowout.  You can live with the gunslinger mentality with a guy who lights up a scoreboard, but Josh doesn't do that.  What's more is that his dumb mistakes aren't even the result of him being aggressive and trusting his arm to hit tight windows.  They're just stupid.

Fall in love with the flash plays at your own risk.  Ultimately there's a reason his numbers stunk in high school, junior college, college, and now the NFL.  He looks the part.  He talks the part.  He just doesn't play the part.  Every other fan base recognizes it.  Here's what fans of the Chiefs thought about it the game that would help determine their next opponent.  http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=327756&page=69

The part that's missing here is context. You're posting real time reactions to a crazy game by other fan bases and they're talking about the prospect of facing a second year QB at home in the conference semis not a projection of his career. Unless that QB is Mahomes or Lamar you're probably looking for that too if you're Chiefs.

Josh might be the one who cost the game yesterday but he was also arguably the best player on the field through 2.5 quarters. I think we (and NFL fans) are going to have a slightly different perspective on this season and this game in a few months.

  3. Tried posting this in another thread which got locked but I think it's related:

are we not better off finding a coordinator that's creative with the run game (Anthony Lynn-esk), draft a stud RB, and re-vamping the O line for more zone blocking and guards who can pull rather than forcing Josh to play read the defense for 60 mins? If you run more play action you have more opportunities to get the QB making plays on the run which is Josh's biggest strength. It might mean having to trade Morse but it would seem a better fit for how McD likes to play.

46 passes + 9 runs is too much. He's not Brady. I wish we had Titans offense.

  4. Philosophical team building question: are we better off finding a coordinator that's creative with the run game (Anthony Lynn-esk), draft a stud RB, and re-vamping the O line for more zone blocking and guards who can pull rather than forcing Josh to play read the defense for 60 mins? If you run more play action you have more opportunities to get the QB making plays on the run which is Josh's biggest strength. 5. McD was the main reason we got to play in this game in the first place. We should all be thanking our lucky stars that he decided to come to Buffalo and turn this franchise around.

The second half collapse was tough to watch but it happened mainly because the opposing QB started playing like an all pro while ours reverted to his worst college tendencies.

our “franchise” qb jas one TD drive vs. a terrible pass D, among other things.   Get Teddy B in FA.

Nah he's going to get at least one more year. Coaches are going to have to stop protecting him and open things up more and see what happens because we seem to be brushing up against our ceiling playing this way. I get why they're so hesitant to trust his decision making.

  7. Deshaun Watson deserves all the credit. He completed the huge 3rd & 18 when we messed up the coverage and he didn't go down when he got sandwiched on that huge last play. He was the better QB today and that's why Texans won.

Bills played well today and arguably overachieved this year. All the young guys need to come back as better players next year, including and especially Allen. We're obviously not quite good enough yet.

Weird last year when Allen was running immediately all the time for yards people said "not sustainable, he is a runner on not a QB." Watson and jackson do it and its "what a playmaker"

Watson has a 120 QB rating and 2 tough, long drive second half TDs  and 2 conversions against one of the best defenses in the league. He's been very good as a passer.

Wow.  Just.....Wow.  Listen to you: "money quotes for those too lazy to click the link"

    Money quotes.

Not for those who aren't interested in the guys take, or aren't motivated to read "yet another analytics dude thinks Allen sucks 'cuz Numbers"

"For those two lazy to click the link"

I don't say this often, and I don't say this lightly, but please: Get Over Yourself.

You sure are working hard at getting all bent out of shape over a pretty innocuous comment.

It may have good points, it may not have good points.  A bunch of its points seem strange to me - why are we concerned about fumbles in the last 10 weeks?  Why not 8 weeks?  Or 6 weeks?

I suspect it's because many writers/fans have pointed to Allen's improved turnover numbers post NE/Tenn. He appears to be picking the time frame most favorable to Allen to better prove his point.

    Quote

But fundamentally, I'm at "Behold the field Wherein I Grow my ***** and Lo, how it is Barren" where the analytics crowd is concerned and have no interest in pursuing their takes at this point.

Josh Allen has always been a test case for the efficacy of eyeball, boots-on-the-ground scouting vs analytics.  That hasn't changed.

I don't think anybody, including Josh Allen or Brian Daboll or Sean McDermott, think that he has arrived at an acceptable level of professional NFL QBing.

I think that the people who work with him, day in and day out, see marked improvement.

Until we see if he takes a step (and it won't be until next season at this point, if we see it), everything else is just wasting electrons.

You responded to my post but don't appear to have even read the article, much of which was dedicated to a film breakdown of Josh's various bugaboos. I quoted some of the stats which were also used to support his arguments, but it would seem a stretch to just blanket write off this writer as "analytics crowd." I find it ironic that you lambasted my "too lazy to click" comment and yet it would appear you fall directly into that group.

  10. Good post OMF. I'd also add that Buffalo's climate makes having a good defense and run game all the more important. Sadly we're never in the playoffs so we don't get to test this theory but running the ball and controlling the clock travels well in poor weather. I'm perfectly fine with this identity; in fact, I'm just happy that the Bills finally have an identity. I'd rather we continue to double down on this and bring Allen along slowly.

I tend to agree with this take, Allen’s footwork and lack of quickly progressing coverage and manipulating matchups will be things to watch if can take that next jump as a QB.

This article is somewhat concerning to say the least. Lots of criticism of Josh's footwork and poor anticipation with accompanying video evidence but here are some of the other money quotes for those too lazy to click the link.

    On taking too many sacks:

    Quote

The Bills rank 24th in adjusted sack rate, per Football Outsiders, while the offensive line ranks fifth in ESPN’s Pass Block Win Rate metric. The offensive line is doing its job, but you wouldn’t know by looking at Allen’s sack totals.

    On accuracy:

    Quote

But the most concerning issue for Allen is, of course, his accuracy. He ranks dead last in completion percentage. Now, completion percentage isn’t the best measure for accuracy as it doesn’t account for drops (the Bills receivers have dropped more passes than all but two teams) or how far downfield a quarterback is throwing, but Allen also ranks poorly in the accuracy metrics that do. He ranks 32nd in on-target throw percentage, per Sports Info Solutions. Only four quarterbacks have a lower “completion percentage over expectation” — David Blough, Dwayne Haskins, Gardner Minshew and Jared Goff — per Next Gen Stats.

    Quote

Allen has, however, improved in the intermediate range, where he’s completing passes at a rate higher than the league average...But everywhere else on the field, Allen’s accuracy has been scattershot. His deep-ball accuracy has been particularly bad and has cost the Bills some big plays in recent weeks. Allen ranks 27th on throws over 10 yards, per Sports Info Solutions.

On Allen's improvement in the turnover department:

    Quote

Even Allen’s improvement in the turnover department appears to be flukey. Yes, Allen has turned the ball over only four times (two interceptions and two fumbles lost) in the last 10 weeks, but only two players in the entire NFL have fumbled more often over that time — Buffalo has just recovered seven of his nine fumbles. And, according to Sports Info Solutions, defenders have dropped five would-be interceptions thrown by Allen since Week 10 alone. Allen hasn’t really protected the ball any better. He’s just been luckier.

On the validity of the game winning drives stat:

    Quote

How about that game-winning drive stat I cited earlier? Well, that’s not nearly as impressive as you probably think. Here are some other notable quarterbacks who have led the league in game-winning drives in recent years: Geno Smith (2013), Blake Bortles (2015), Marcus Mariota (2017). It’s a fun stat, but it means very little.

There's much more in the link. The article reads like it was from someone responding to all the pro Allen comments on TBD. It's a bit of a one-sided hit job but the writer makes a lot of good points (unfortunately for us).
