We ate 31 mill in dead cap just to get rid of the locker- room cancer named Diggs and the team was better for it.

As to Metcalf, who I really like, spending 27 mill on a WR does not work in our current cap structure when you have very limited cap space (-12 mill right now), 12-15 roster spots to fill, key internal FAs to re-sign like Ty Johnson and Hollins, and a need to upgrade DE, DT, S and CB in addition to WR.  Even if Beane is able to manipulate current contracts to create 35 mill in cap space, using up 27 mill on Metcalf still doesn't work.  There just isn't enough money to acquire and pay Metcalf and fix the other roster holes.

Does that make it clearer?  Truthfully we can get much of Metcalf's production out of a good rookie and or with a lower cost FA like Slayton or Brown or Moore.

Lets also be realistic.  It's our defense that cost us the last two years in the playoffs.  Allocating our limited resources there makes infinitely more sense then spending wastefully on a luxury WR.

PS: Beane just investment 15 mill per season in Shakir, is still on the hook for Samuel and has Hollins to re-sign.  I doubt he drops another big contract at WR given our other needs.

I’m all for investment in the D…..as well as Metcalf …

I don’t understand the reference to Diggs in relation to possibly acquiring Metcalf?

You can’t sit here now and say with any degree of certainty that they will get the same production from a rookie…feel free to use the one they picked last year as a comparison…

Nothing you have said above prevents them making this move should they choose …

Hypothetically…Metcalf will not be costing $27mil against the cap in 2025 if he is acquired …it will probably be about  a quarter of that after  the new contract extension  is factored in  and a void year or two if needed ,,,leaving room for other moves to be made …

Josh Allen will never be better for the rest of his career than in 2025 … Im fully excepting Beane to make a splash move of this magnitude…if not this specific one …the future is now friend …

PS - they are paying Shakir $31m over the next three years and he can be released then with minimal dead cap …that contract won’t have a lot of bearing  on what they decided to do with Metcalf ..

  2. If the Bills D improves and they can get more stops and get off the field more often … this automatically improves the offense  as it means the MVP gets more opportunities with the ball in his hands …

Last time I checked … 7 points you prevent the other team scoring counts on the scoreboard the same as 7 points you get for scoring …

The argument that the D is always lame as f in the playoffs so why do it anything about is an odd one …no coach would seriously undertake that strategy..

Having said all that … get Metcalf if you can … he is the kind of player they are lacking … re-sign Hollins and Johnson and you are just about done on O for 2025 ..

I'm not especially happy with the DL but at least we have a DL. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills on here sometimes the way people act like that's our biggest need. I don't think a lot of fans recognize that right now we literally don't have an NFL WR room. I know there is still FA and the draft but as of right now we could not field an NFL offense. That is absolutely the biggest need on the team. Even if we wanted to run back what we had last season you're probably talking $18M+ this year to bring Cooper and Hollins back which means we're paying a lot more money for the same group of players that couldn't separate downfield.

So if a WR like Metcalf is available, we have to do what it takes to acquire him. It fills the biggest need, it gives us a skill set that doesn’t exist on the roster, and it adds high end talent to a group that desperately needs it.

I’m not sure of your “ we can’t field an offense  “ comment …Out of the 5 WR that suited up in the playoffs …I expect 4 to be back including Hollis to be re-signed on a modest deal.  They would be crazy to bring back Cooper as the game seems to have passed him by, but that still leaves Hollis, Shakir, Samuel and Coleman…. It’s not my preferred WR group by any means , but it looks like it’s a group they have put together and  seem to be happy with, and to be fair that group did have  a reasonable level of success last year…

Id be happy to bring in a legitimate field stretching WR as I mentioned previously to replace Cooper  … if they can get Metcalf on reasonable terms that would be  great …but I don’t want to give up the farm for him … it looks like you have moved your enthusiasm from Higgins onto the next best “available”  guy …it’s nice to set the bar high .. but we are up against other teams with better draft picks and more cap space though…so I wouldn’t be banking on it…

The D seems to have several more issues than the O as we head into 2025 …they can’t get off the field- unless they get turn overs …and thats not a long term viable strategy in my view …

To be fair we also don't have the numbers on offense. We have 3 WRs on the roster, 0 that can definitely start outside. WR and CB are the only gaping holes on the roster. Safety is up there too because you don't want to rely on Bishop. DL needs improvements but there are no gaping holes, all of our starters from last year are under contract.

Which DL are you comfortable with ? Are you happy paying Rousseau $25m if he digs in over that ?  Oliver was  great in 2023 … had a step back last year …. I wouldn’t have any concerns if any other DL player moved on … and a couple like Jones and Miller probably should

Yes … get a WR that can stretch the field as well as D upgrades

I refuse to pay him like Saquon Barkley and don’t want the unnecessary distraction of his contract situation

That’s a different argument …I wouldn’t worry too much about the possible distraction at this early stage …. Likely it doesn’t happen.

There is no guarantee that Johnson is back

yeah I know … if you follow back back through the thread ..this is a hypothetical discussion if Johnson is back … I don’t see the need to draft this guy too…

Do you think Cook could be replaced??

Yes … but he doesn’t need to be until 2026…

I don’t want to draft a guy in the 4th Round to play behind Cook, Johnson and Davis …

Draft a guy in 12 months if they need to

Resign Johnson and draft Neal with one of the 4th rd picks

Every year you want a high running back in the draft 😎 … at least this year it’s only a fourth ..,.how much is he going to play if they bring back Johnson ?

I actually think he sounds a little more tense and and terse when answering the questions this go around. I think the pressure is on not from ownership but in delivering while Allen is still in his prime.  You know Sal M asked about Speed WR fully knowing that the Bills passed on the fastest one in Worthy to take Coleman and that trade will be tied to him justifiably or not much like the Mahomes trade will be tied to the Bills in 2017.

Ok… I didn’t get those vibes ..but he should be feeling some pressure now with JA going into Year 8… I heard a stat recently that Josh is the third oldest starting QB in the AFC now which was a little sobering ..

My gut feel is that he will roll the dice this offseason before the draft … they have some draft capital and will be cashed up when he makes his cuts and restructures

Beane is sounding more and more like a used car salesman. The whole story about wanting speed then stating football isn't played on a track field. No *****, if it were we'd be pretty screwed!

Not sure about the used car salesman … he seems more honest than most …

He seems a little comfortable though …

I don't have an issue with extending cook - i have an issue with 15M AAV.  As should anyone.  Cap is going up, but that would be the 2nd highest in the NFL, above barkley, jacobs, and everyone but CMC.  Let Bijan and Gibbs set the market, don't do it with Cook.

There is no way that Beane is paying him $15m a year … he doesn’t pay top of the market any more … ( his own players anyway)

You don't publicly say these things about a rookie unless you believe he is gonna take this as motivation and become very good and quickly

They will take the approach with each player individually that they think will produce the best results to motivate them to improve …. Some may need a public call out whilst others might respond better to more personal encouragement…
