There’s also Deionte Thompson, who finishes the season poorly and has an injury that will prevents him from participating in drills. That may affect his stock.

Seriously? Only clairvoyant's dare reply to this post before the Combine ?
Err...no. I mean it’s a sports discussion forum. I wasn’t expecting accurate predictions just opinions, which I’m interested to hear.
Honestly I think the combine testing is more than a bit weird. But I’m still curious to see how people’s opinions change.

The combine is on this upcoming week. Which players do you see blowing it away with their physical performance. For me, Charles. Omenihu, Andy Isabella.
Do you see anyone having an Orlando Brown type let down?
I’m intrigued to see how DK Metcalf tests. Draft network says the TE class is deep so that will be worth watching.
Who are some little talked about guys at the moment who you see their stock rising?
My pick for this is Justin Layne can from Michigan. Watched him play against Ohio and was very impressed. He hasn’t been on the radar at all but I expect him to jump into 2nd-3rd R consideration after the combine. I was glad to see his name come up in this article.
Who are you looking forward to seeing?

I’m also wondering if they will go after some new special team guys with some of their late round picks.
Let’s hope they can replicate what they achieved last year with their later selections and UDFAs.
-
I would add Chris Lindstrom, T.J. Hockenson, and Garrett Bradbury to your list, based on character traits.
Another interesting trend to follow is Daboll’s Alabama connection, especially since we are expecting there to be a focus on offense. This may mean Jonah Williams, Ross Piersbacher, Josh Jacobs.
I agree that Risner is a reach at 9. I also fear he maybe gone by the time the Bills second pick comes round. Both he and Hockenson are late 1st early second candidates. Like Hernandez last year, they won’t last far into the 2nd. If they miss Risner, McGovern, Beaushwazel and Powers are possibilities later.

He wasn’t very impressive for Carolina and at that time he didn’t have much competition, he still got cut. Perhaps he had an injury though.
Jets signed him last year as a camp body as I recollect, but he didn’t make the roster.
I don’t think he would be helpful in Buffalo.
-
Carolina want to keep him, but the reports are that he wants more than they are willing to offer. Talks last season went nowhere and he made the unfortunate decision to back himself this season and bet against injury.
He will test the market and likely not return. He may get more than he is worth since there are several teams with the need and cap space.
He had a great 2017, but prior to that he was just average, so it’s a lot of money to put into a guy who really only had one breakout season.

Can he resist? IDK..but he can only play out this silly rebuild for so long. another bottom 5 offense might not cut it with the Pegula's in year three, and it shouldn't.
BPA matters more in a few instances. First, where your team is already built. Second, where you have so many holes that it really doesn't matter where you start.
But when one side of the ball is pretty good and the other is devoid of talent, and you continue to neglect that side because you're taking what you believe is the "BPA" in your mind, your career as a GM isn't going to be long...especially when you aren't winning.
That doesn't mean you take a dud at an area at need. But "reaching" is a relative term. Taking an OL who might be 15th on your board at no. 9 isn't really a "reach".
*****...Bill Walsh didn't even like scouts to talk about the round a player should be drafted. His canned response was, "if he works out, no one remembers the round he was chosen." He really wanted to know, how does this guy help our team?
"BPA" is a half-subjective term in and of itself.
Example.
Take a Dalton Risner vs. Montez Sweat comparison.
When they matched up twice this year...Sweat one 2-3 of the plays. Risner won the rest.
Sweat might be able to get in the backfield 3-4 times a game. Risner might keep his guy out of the backfield on all but 2-3 plays per game.
Who's the BPA?
You can use the canned phrases like "you don't draft a RT at 9" or "you always need a pass rush"
But I'll take the guy that wins 90% of the matchups.
I may agree with you. It will be interesting. I think Risner (OT) Lindstrom (G) and Jenkins (C) would be a great trio to take with the first 3 picks.
And yes certainly if the team has a mediocre season Beane will likely get heavily criticized no matter who he picked. Time will tell.
My prediction?
DE or DT unless he trades back.

I'm going to go off the board and say...draft 2 in the first two rounds. Preferably with a trade down for an extra pick or two.
The tight FA market is one factor. Another...the bigger factor is that we're not in a situation where we need to plug a single hole, we need to plug 3-4. Add in that quality OL are becoming more scarce in the draft.
2 quality tackles...one of whom can play the interior...or move Dawkins to G.
Or. 1 tackle and a C like Bradbury if he's still there. I might be the only one, but I'd be thrilled with a Risner/Bradbury 1-2, or a few other combinations.
Possibilities open up. You can make a really positive step towards building a quality unit, rather than taking a patchwork or piecemeal approach...but only if the commitment is there. This is THE year to make that commitment.
An edge rusher does nothing to improve a 30th ranked offense.
Work the problem.
I agree with you. But if Beane truly believes in BPA as he says he does, can he resist taking a D player?
I just don’t think OL can be BPA at 9- I’m not a Jonah Williams fan. You could argue that WR isn’t BPA either.

I agree that he'd be a good signing at the right price. He already knows the playbook, could provide depth, add a few interesting defensive sub-packages, and mentor our young linebacker duo. I would think that McDermott's presence as head coach would make Buffalo one of his top choices as far as places to finish his career. Just the leadership he could provide and knowledge he could impart to Edmunds and Milano ALONE would be worth the signing, even if he rarely sees the field.
All of this, of course, is contingent upon him not wanting a ton of money. Paying a bunch for a 35-year-old with bad knees is never sound roster building strategy.I don’t figure money to be the problem-but he will want to play. He’s not a liability, but just because he’s an expanther we shouldn’t assume he will arrive at OBD. He might be a better fit in a few other places.
-
He’d be a good signing for Buffalo; I doubt he would be expensive. But I also doubt he would choose to be a rotational player. Who knows though.

Why doesn't Carolina want him anymore? That's my question.
The average age of that team is among the highest in the league. Rivera under pressure to not always play his vets. New owner. Shaq Thompson first round pick 4 years ago has never been more than rotational because he couldn’t get past TD. It’s a find out year for him.

As a Panther fan, I can tell you that the fanbase went off Star towards the end of his time in Carolina. It was thought by many that we upgraded with Dontari Poe.
This season our run D took a significant backward step.

Don’t let facts get in your way.
Cam Newton was drafted in 2011. The Panthers were in the 2016 SB.
I mean you literally couldn’t have chosen a worse example to prove your point.

He has average size and was one of many WRs on his team so production was there but not “wow”, and not the most “gifted” (i.e. he is overshadowed by Parris Campbell) so he’s looked at differently. He’s not the explosive type and doesn’t have exceptional size, which typically one or both will make a WR a 1st round talent - Or you can be smaller but have all world speed, and/or production vs top corners. I think he did avg 20 yards/catch, but he wasn’t #1 WR in college so most wouldn’t project him to be one in the nfl. He only played one year in a real passing offense so his #s aren’t what some others will be. All of that said, his film should match what we saw this week. He was always making plays.
Love him as a fit for the Bills because of his expertise as a special teams ace at Ohio. WR depth is a bonus.

I don’t think he’s in that conversation. He’s a 2nd rounder.

Agreed. Although he may go late R1. He would be a good fit for the Vikings or Texans.

It’s cool reading that about Risner. He would be a great fit for Buffalo offering flexibility at T and G. Might not be great value at 9 though.

Maybe it’s time for the NFL to get non-Americans to officiate.
-
Daylon Mack DT (Texas A+M), Devine Ozigbo RB (Nebraska). Also curious to see if the Canadian linebacker Matthieu is drafted.
-
Of course Lodge was WR3 behind Metcalf and AJ Brown. Said to be a good runner with the caveat of a limited route tree at Ole Miss.
Metcalf has a high ceiling. 1.9 maybe a little high for my liking though with the injury and a lack of production in college.
-
True. Lodge is the highest rated receiver who isn’t though. Rated as 2-3 rd prospect. He would be good value from 3 on I would think.

They should be meeting with every receiver they can.
That being said I do wonder if he’s a hidden talent having played behind Brown & Metcalf.
TDN have a high opinion of him. “Top offensive prospect” at the shrine game.

Buffalo are reported to have had a meeting with WR DeMarkus Lodge at the Shrine game.

I read this stuff and I wonder if I've watched the same thing as you... They made the team older, traded and created the dead cap space.
They created this. The inherit bs is what Beane and McDermott are selling to make that next contract.
They created dead cap for one year to get the monkey off their back. In a year with a rookie QB when they were never going to contend. What ‘old’ players did they bring in? Vontae maybe, Ivory I guess? Not exactly horrendous albatross contracts though. Some might say recruiting safe veteran depth options with a rookie team is actually quite a smart tactic.
You can’t argue that they’ve not successfully drafted some good young players surely? Going into this season the loss of RIchie I and E Wood put them in an extremely tough position considering they knew they wanted centerpieces on O and D at QB and LB. So yes, I guess we are seeing things differently. Only a die hard Bills fan would say that this was a roster which gave McD a chance. Unless you are saying that Sammy Watkins and Dareus would have magically transformed this team into contenders.
Starting players who have been in the league 2 years or less:
Robert Foster, Zay Jones, Dion Dawkins, Josh Allen, Matt Milano, Ttedavious White, Tremaine Edmunds, Taron Johnson, Levi Wallace, Harrison Phillips Wyatt Teller.
Not bad for 2 off seasons work.
Who do you see as potential risers and fallers after the Combine?

Metcalf is going to be interesting for sure. How is his neck injury? We will see how freely he moves and the medical checkup. He’s also knocked for his route running due to the limited tree he ran in Miss. so some of the drills will be interesting.
From the perspective of all theWR prospects the gauntlet drill is worth watching. Hakeem Butler for example has been criticized for drops this season past.
