You don't draft a guard in the 1st ... or do you?
RocCityRoller replied to Thurman#1's topic in The Stadium Wall
Maybe not a OG specifically, but if Tyler Linderbaum (C/OG) falls to 25 do you snag him? Get Allen his version of Kent Hull? Allows Morse to be moved next year when a couple of expensive extensions are due. -
Both good options. Would rather send a pick or two sent to the Giants for Bradberry, than spend picks and players to move up in the draft (per recent rumors). The window is open and the Autumn wind is blowing in. It smells like a herd of stampeding Buffalo.
-
Yeah, waiting for specific contract details to come out, but Wagner cheaper than Edmunds is a real possibility......
-
Lose Miller, get Wagner. Different types of players, but both excellent. Lose Robert Woods and probably OBJ, add Allen Robinson Lose Whitworth (LT) extend Noteboom Rams are doing a fine job filling holes with the 'win now' philosophy. They will be tough again.

2022 Free Agency - Around the NFL Thread
RocCityRoller replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
Agree with the last part. According to OTC and Spotrac his salary is $23m this year, so even better for Lamar. The 5th year option changed for the class of 2018. It is no longer pegged on draft position alone, that is why his 5th year option is higher than Baker's. Lamar is playing this pretty smart IMO. A lot of teams are pulling out of the cap mess from the retraction in the COVID year and the cap is estimated to go up by 10% or so each year. A lot of good QBs were due for extensions and renegotiations. He sat back and let the QB market adjust itself upward. Per Spotrac Rodgers ($50m AAV), Stafford ($40m AAV) and settling the Watson mess ($46m AAV) pushed the QB ceiling way up. Wilson is probably due an extension soon too and should be north of $40m AAV (though the news is no negotiations are currently underway). Just a year ago Jackson and Baker Mayfield were being spoke about in the conversation about extensions. By simply staying put he has pulled well ahead of Baker. From a time-value basis of money you would want the higher salary now, but I think Lamar was smart waiting as he did so far. Starting with the 2018 draft, when a 5th year option is exercised both the 4th and 5th year salaries are fully guaranteed when signed, so Lamar's 2022 5th yr salary of $23m is fully guaranteed. The same applies to franchise tags. When a Franchise tag is tendered it also is fully guaranteed. The estimated 2023 Franchise tag for QBs is $31.5m up from $29.7m in 2022 according to Over The Cap. That will probably creep up with all the dust settling on these QB contracts. Assuming the Ravens franchise Lamar for 2024, he has $54.5m all guaranteed by 2024. Not bad. He may also be waiting to see what happens with R Wilson, but it looks like Wilson's camp is also waiting. I believe players can sign extensions until July 15th. If no extension is agreed to the Franchise Tag mechanism starts after the Super Bowl in 2024. It looks to me that Jackson waited to let the QB market increase and is more interested in up front guaranteed money through at least 2024. That may be wise given his play style? -
Poor Tom Tupa would never make the NFL with those definitions! He was a fun player to watch.

Beasley had three broken ribs last season?

Don't forget Crowder was added too! And I am all for drafting a WR somewhere rounds 1-3 -
Beasley had three broken ribs last season?
RocCityRoller replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall
I thought this was common knowledge. Perhaps some people were too busy letting 'other things' shade their evaluation of him? Beasley playing through broken bones: That said his injuries were adding up and efficiency started to drop, so I understand the move on from him. He could still help quite a few NFL teams. I could see him in GB with A Rod, they could use WR help, and he had higher output than MVS. He and A Rod share some values and ideas too, so there is some mesh there. I could stomach that better then the Pats or Chiefs. -
This looks like a 'doing right by one of your guys' moves not so much a quality roster signing because of the Achilles and how he played last year Maybe this is good optics to lure future FA not named J.D. McKissic?

I think you have to look at units, not just offense or defense. I do agree that too much FA dollars, and premium picks the last 3 years (round 1 and 2) have been on DL. It is becoming NY Jets like, when they kept taking DL early and missing. No premium pick has been spent on DB since Tre White. Poyer and Hyde were FA steals who rightly got extended to starter level salaries. Most other DBs were late round picks or UDFA (Wallace, D Jackson etc). Taron Johnson was found way down in the 4th. FA CBs have been guys like EJ Gaines. DB, OL, WR etc have been ignored because of the swing and misses at DL. It is a clear issue. I hope the young 1st and 2nd rounders get into gear and start producing, along with the new load of FA D-linemen. They have to. My biggest issue with OBD is how they evaluate, coach and develop OL and DL. It is taking resources from other units. If Buffalo had managed their OL evaluation and coaching better, it might be in better shape. (sit Ford earlier, give Teller more time, start Bates instead of keeping him on the sideline, draft C Humphrey instead of Basham etc) A line of LT Dawkins - LG Bates - C Humphrey - RG Teller - RT Brown would be young and beastly, and it was in OBD grasp. Hoping Settle, Jones, Miller are a better crop of FA than Jefferson, Star, Butler. Miller should be a + over Addison, who I thought was the best DL FA they have brought in. CB is a clear position of need and there are 8 or so 1st to 2nd round DBs available this draft before a fall off. A lot of teams will need to find WRs now, so maybe that will let a CB like Elam, McCreary or Gordon fall to 25. Maybe Beane moves up to secure one? That said I think they have managed the rest of the roster well given the nearly maniacal focus on DL.

Big win for the Bills, Pegulas and WNY!

I'm not sure where anything you posted disagrees with anything I posted. I thought my position was well stated. Directly from your source, which was focused on NFL players: "Typically, athletes will be back to their prior level of function by 9 months after surgery. Research has shown reinjury rates to be lower for athletes that returned to sport at 9 months or later." I said he is tentative (meaning not guaranteed, or best case scenario) for September, and I do not want him to rush back. From my post: "Agree that September is tentative. Even if Tre is back in September, is he 'Tre White' immediately?" Tre had surgery on Dec 14th. December 14th to September 14th is 9 months, the time period the article you referenced points to success for NFL players. Assuming most games are on Sunday, Sundays in September are 4/11/18/25 I noted Buffalo may not have Tre for games 1-4, which fits this time period. From my post: "I am not comfortable potentially putting D Jackson and Cam Lewis on the boundaries in week 1-4 for a team with Super Bowl aspirations." Additionally, I said that Bills fans have been clamoring for a Wallace upgrade regardless. With Wallace gone this seems to be a glaring need. From my post: "That said, Wallace is a loss, whether TSW was a big fan of him or not. Even with Wallace many wanted to see moves to upgrade CB the past 2 or so years" Buffalo should bring in a vet to help hold down the CB position to: 1) fill in for the 1-4 weeks Tre may not be ready 2) fill in the gap left by Wallace signing elsewhere and possibly improve the CB2 position when Tre returns. I thought it was obvious that I am not happy with OBD and the CB situation, and that missing some or all of September is a real possibility for Tre White and his long term success as an NFL player. Where are we disagreeing to the point you made your somewhat snarky last post? Also where do you get 9-12 months? Even your own source does not claim that?

Fun mental exercise. Put Mills on New England and Jones in Houston. Who looks better? -
Agree that September is tentative. Even if Tre is back in September, is he 'Tre White' immediately? Not sure who is saying half the year. I think October is reasonable to see the return of the Tre White we all love to root for. I do not want him to feel pressured to return too early. I do think we have seen NFL players (some on our own team) try to play through bad injuries or return faster than fully healed. I appreciate @Richard Noggin putting forth a solid study. According to that 6 of 10 athletes return to pre-injury function and Tre's work ethic, access to Bills staff and facilities, and the nature of his injury should help him in those odds. That said, Wallace is a loss, whether TSW was a big fan of him or not. Even with Wallace many wanted to see moves to upgrade CB the past 2 or so years. I am not comfortable potentially putting D Jackson and Cam Lewis on the boundaries in week 1-4 for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. I did like what I saw from Nick McCloud in last years pre-season, and Olaijah Griffin is in that mix too. If any position can be coached up by this team it is DB, but a lot of us would feel better with a steady vet addition. Seems odd none was added yet.

Deshaun Watson to Browns - $230 million guaranteed
RocCityRoller replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
'Blow' would have been a bigger issue in Miami. Yes that is a double entendre 🤣 -
Didn't realize Crowder used to return punts in Washington (2015-2018) 86-677-1TD 6.7 (7.9 Avg) some PR and Slot competition for McKenzie.

Generally agree with most of your post. I do wish I had your faith in the 'grand plan' at OL. I still believe that DL/OL are the glaring weaknesses in talent evaluation and coaching on this staff. Hopeful Kromer helps fix the OL coaching. As for run blocking, Bates is no pancake blocker, agreed, but just off the top of my head, Singletary's two rushing TDs vs New England in the playoffs were behind Bates. The first, near the goal line, was between Bates and Dawkins. The second was a traditional pulling guard play (the classic Washington Redskins, and Alabama pulling guard play) where Bates pulled and took out Van Noy at the point of attack. Result was a @20 yd TD rush. None of those pulling concepts were really used effectively until Bates was put in because Mongo/Boettger and Ford can't pull. Bates can. TD #1: Bates (71) identifies Jamie Collins (58) run blitz and stands him up, gets him off balance and pushed him back. Dawkins ends up pancaking Judon. TD. TD#2: Really beautifully executed Pull play, one of Buffalo's best executed runs all season. McKenzie sent in motion and engages JC Jackson. Gilliam (41) has a great block on Collins (58), and Bates (71) pulls and stands up Van Noy (53) at the point of attack. Singletary has a clear gap to run through. Bates started the last 3 games in the regular season (NE/ ATL/ NYJ), and then 2 in the playoffs. 4 of Singletary's 7 rushing TDs came in those 5 games. Singletary's only 100 yard rushing game in 2021 came against Atlanta (23-110-2 TD 4.78 YPC) where Bates started Singletary tacked on 3 more rushing TDs in the playoffs, so 7 of his 10 rushing TDs was with Bates as a starter. I'm not saying Bates is an All Pro, but Bates is a good pass blocker and effective run blocker. If I have JA I want good pass blockers. If my RB starts getting more rushing TDs with him in the line up, then all the better. Starting Saffold at LG and a mix of Ford/Mancz as my pre draft competition at LG seems bad. It's not mentioned but Boettger a safety valve at OG the past few sesons is not under contract, he is a UFA and is coming off an Achilles. Even if Buffalo drafts an RG, then you have a 1st yr RG next to a 2nd yr RT, and as well as Brown exceeded expectations, he was no stud. Plenty of mistakes covered by JA. Not sure I want to put a rookie next to him to hold down the right side of the line. Mancz is an ok backup at C (he started a full season at C for Houston in 2016) Everyone has opinions, I think the way the RFA tags were or were not applied to Bates is showing differences among fan willingness to take on risk as much as anything.

Its a fanatical message board. I laugh at it sometimes, get caught up in it plenty and when I get angry, just take time off. FA and draft conversations on this board always remind me of the clip from Seinfeld below. Sums up sports fans in :32 seconds

Since Adams and MVS have moved on from Green Bay, maybe Beane can flip Kumerow to GB to make AR happy 🤣 -
Fair point, well played. I do like this signing. I think its an iron sharpens ion situation and neither Crowder or McKenzie has the slot outright. It does give Buffalo two solid options though
-
This is part of what I have been trying to point out. Anyone who can diagnose OL blocking can see Bates is a (+) NFL pulling Guard. It's not hard to see. I'll post it again.... watch 71 pull. Check out the view from 0:32 onward for the best angle
-
Did you now that Crowder has never started more than 12 games in a season? In 7 seasons as a pro he has played in 16+ games only 3 times.
-
I think it may be an open competition. McKenzie is still younger and healthier and has looked good when in the slot. Either way I think this is a solid pick up IMO. If Crowder can lock in the slot, then McKenzie is still our slash. Who knows what the hodge podge of Offensive coaches come up with?
