Outside of MLB, Where are the Bills Worse in 2023?
ngbills replied to jwhit34's topic in The Stadium Wall
That is a very naïve mindset. It is one thing to say you would not may him $20M per, but to pretend that he is no different than a guy like Dodson, Spector, etc makes no sense. Edmunds is being paid like a top LB in the league because he is one. If he was not getting paid like he is there is no doubt he would be the starting MLB for the Bills. -

The debatable: WR - A lot of hope in Harty and Sherfield. If we flipped the script and last year had Harty/Sherfield and replaced with McK/Crowder/Brown we would believe that was an upgrade. I think folks are stuck on the we cant get worse mindset or "obviously" last years guys sucked. RB - Similar to WR. People saw enough of Singletary. But he could be better than any RB we have on the roster. I am hopeful as a group this position is better, OL - Repeat as stated above. The new is obviously better than the old. However, Saffold was an ex-pro bowler with high hopes. S Brown was expected to be an all pro. A year later we have a rookie that hopefully can contribute right away and a bunch of similar guys as we have seen in the past. Biggest concern is RT as if Brown cant protect the edge we are no using RB's and TE's to help which limits the offense even more. Worse: LB - Edmunds is a big loss at a position that was already not deep. Outside of Milano we have a bunch of JAG's to nobody's. Better: DL - Floyd and Ford are good additions DB - Rapp is better depth at S TE - Kincaid is upgrade assuming he is on the field which seems like he will be No change QB - Back up Keenum vs Back up Allen K - No changes -
Last year folks thought we were set with Diggs, Davis, Crowder. We heard how Shakir was going to surprise people and win a starting job. We heard about McK finally getting a shot. Knox was going to step up. Cook was going to be a receiving threat. I don’t know if I would call Sherfield, Harty, and Kincaid an upgrade over those expectations. It is very similar thinking. Actually more wishful though because Crowder has the most production of these players expected to produce. You can can’t just say this year is better because you know now that last year didn’t work. Last year at this same time people were more confident Davis a #2, Crowder was an upgrade at slot, etc etc.

Not gonna be this year -
Morse vs. Tippman or McGovern Bates/McGovern vs. Tomlinson/Vera-Tucker Dawkins/Brown vs. Brown/Becton Jets line could be better than ours. QB play impacts how an OL looks and tell me the last time the Jets has a real QB? They have potential in a bunch of early draft picks (4 starters are 1st round picks).

The Jets and Fins will both be better. Jets are currently favored in 11 games Fins are currently favored in 11 games Bills are currently favored in 13 games Makes sense to me. I could Fins and Jets winning between 9-13 games. Bills should be between 10-14.

Herbert deal signed : 262M - 5 yrs extension

Beane wizadry at work. Signed Allen to a deal that only he knew would be passed by others in the following years. Pure genius at work. Just wait for the Trevor Lawrence deal. -
We are not carrying 4 TE’s.

Agreed. Look around the league - I would not call any room "stacked". There are a handful of elite backs and everyone else. That is why the Hines money was so odd to me. We actually paid him more than Harris and Murray combined. And if the money was for a returner that is even more scary to value that over help for JA. I would of let him walk and used that money on a WR. Too late now and we are eating that money.

Training Camp opens today! 2023 Season is upon us!

Did Diggs sleep in his car? Carrying blanket and a grocery looking bag. His shirt looks all torn up too. -
Oh no. Can we start the how are we going to resign James Cook threads...
-
Its the home team bias. Folks always think our whatever room is stacked. Reality is we have a 2nd rounder that is unproven and still learning and two guys making essentially league minimum. Bills fans will call it stacked while non-Bills fans would put in the lower third of the league.

NFL Salary Cap Changes A few common sense rules that should change. 1) Players on the IR should not count vs the cap. If they played a portion of the season prorate the cap it by games before going on IR. Obviously NFL will need to make sure teams dont abuse the rule. 2) Retired players should be the same as IR players. Same goes for monitoring for abuse. Changes I would like to see. The salary of drafted players do not have a cap, only free agents. If you draft well and run a good franchise you keep your guys. Draft crappy you will need to spend and could run into cap issues. Will have less player movement, so NFL will never go for it.

Harty makes the most sense. Only other options Shakir and potentially Murray on KO's.

Has the importance of returns changed in todays NFL? Obviously yes. Return leaders last season vs 10 years prior. 2022 Touchback % - 14 Kickers >70% (leader was 90%) 2022 Touchback % - 0 Kickers >70% (leader was 67%) 2022 Leader in Kick Return Yards - 1,009 (only 1 player with 1,000+) 2012 Leader in Kick Return Yards - 1,533 (8 players with 1,000+) 2022 Leader in Kick Returns - 35 (only 2 players with >30) 2012 Leader in Kick Returns - 57 (11 players with >30) 2022 Leader in Punt Return Yards - 362 (only 2 players with 350+) 2012 Leader in Punt Return Yards - 481 (7 players with 350+) 2022 Leader in Punt Returns - 40 (only 1 players >35) 2012 Leader in Punt Returns - 51 (6 players with >35)

Number of returns by guys on the roster... KR Harty - 75 Hyde - 37 Murray - 19 Sherfield - 1 Shakir - 1 Diggs - 1 Poyer - 1 PR Hyde - 95 Harty - 77 Poyer - 17 Diggs - 6 Shakir - 3

Hines is a luxury type player. You have cap room then add him to your room. If your tight on cap space the money can be better spent, unless he is will to take less. Well they gave gave him way more money than I would have and no it comes back to bite us. TEN only had $3M more in cap space than us and was able to fit Hopkins in. Assuming no Hines the Bills would have been in the same spot as them to afford the deal.
-
Actually its the opposite. When you have elite DB's you can attack more and take chances. With the guys we had playing they need some help. They are not going win the numbers game its just a matter of time.

Hopkins released by Arizona (7/16: signed by Titans)

All we needed to do was restrux one or two of a few guys. TEN only has like $3M more cap space than us and got a deal done. -

No team has Kelce but that is why CIN needs Chase, Higgins and Boyd. That is why MIA needs Hill and Waddle. The Bills need a Diggs and somebody. The hope is that somebody is Davis (looked possible entering last season, not so much anymore), Knox or Kincaid, one of the journeyman in Harty or Sherfield. Until then the Bills are just Diggs and the supporting cast. The teams mentioned above are the who we need to beat this year to achieve our goals. I think we are well behind all of them in threats to catch the ball until we have a solid #2 option.
