If we cannot trade up for our QB
RochesterRob replied to BBillsWestCoast's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If we cannot trade up for a QB......You will hear cries of incompetency and conspiracy whether warranted or not. A fair number will not accept any explanation whatsoever. Come to think of it as divided as people here are on which QB to be chosen THERE will be threads by the advocates of the QB's who were not chosen claiming incompetency and conspiracy. This will go on for months and the daily threads on this will ramp up if we get off to anything less than a 6-2 start. I want to win as bad as anybody but some people need to get a life. I don't believe for a moment that even if Beane and Co check this site that they let the "advice" here to supercede their own judgement. -
I think pick 12 goes for Roquan Smith and any QB Beane is eyeing might fall to 10 so he will package 22 with a couple other picks to get that player which is to say I doubt that he sees any one QB as head and shoulders above the others.

Some are getting ready to tar and feather him going by a few comments here. Making the playoffs last year was nice but improbable all things considered so it may be a year or so before we go deep into the playoffs. Further, let him get his guys regardless of the position in the draft. I'm not going to let a draft that does not go my way ruin my spring and summer so I don't understand why with some people that things will get ugly. What are they going to do that matters?

That's all I would expect and some generalizing about the draft and how there are "numerous possibilities" at positions of need. That much time has been spent accumulating and analyzing data on a dozen plus players for the first round of the draft. That every effort will be expended to bring the best players from the draft to Buffalo. To caution that many steps remain ahead to build a championship team and the draft is another step but not the only step. I like Beane but expect a lot of GM speak at this presser. As to laying out a specific plan in regards to round 1 of the draft that is not going to happen.

I say we will not draft a QB round 1
RochesterRob replied to mead107's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Quite a few of them fail to understand that "ya gotta pay the price." All too often I see a move up post include a ridiculous bid to get into the top 4. Such as our two firsts (pre-Glenn to the Bengals), a second, and Talley's wrist wrap for pick number 2. Then they seem to think all first round picks are equal such as when we were at 21 that Denver's pick at 5 is pretty much the same thing. -

People are giving virtually no credit to the possibility of other teams moving up. When it is brought up many get defensive or pooh-pooh on the idea. Further, the QB's could come off the board in a number of different ways. -
You can only get a good QB in the top 3

It would be interesting to know how many of those picks were the result of staying in a draft slot and how many were move ups. -

Yes, it is a discussion board and I don't hate you for having a different opinion. I guess I am used to the guys who have the opinion to move up to pick 2 or 3 being combative if somebody differs with them. I would add that I think an interview can be a big wild card and will matter when it comes to somebody such as Rosen (potentially). He has made it known he does not want to be in Cleveland and might have similar feelings about Buffalo. He might even chance throwing the interview with the Bills if he did not otherwise think it would hurt his draft standing. Rosen interviewing poorly may not come to light publicly but would be ample reason for Beane to push him down on the list. As to my hopes and I believe Beane might be considering doing this would be to hold pick 12 for Roquan Smith to anchor the defense. Whether getting a vet QB was intentional or unintentional it does open the door to allow a rookie QB to sit for a while. I think that Allen is viable in this scenario and probably could be had at pick 10 or thereabouts. Use 22, a second, and another pick to get up to 10 to grab Allen. Now we have Allen, Smith, and can address OL, WR, TE with our other high picks. -
I think that Beane really covets Roquan Smith and is leaving a spot open to this point for him on our roster. Getting someone such as Allen who should be able to sit for a year is a bonus as his biggest shortcomings such as level of competition while in college can be addressed this way. Rosen might have more upside but he carries more negatives as well.

The evaluation that the pro's use to evaluate the QB prospects is the only one that matters. It does not matter what you, me, some guy who runs a blog, or Kiper thinks. Could be 4 off the board by pick 6 or it could be 2 by pick 6 or it could be 1 by pick 6. I don't really get your top three analogy. It seems a little arbitrary to me. And it is only one sample. I know the '83 draft was one of a kind but if you looked at 3 or 4 others that were similar would you still find that two out of the top three were studs in their pro careers? What about '98 when QB's were 1-2 in that draft? We have Manning then we have Leaf. One will be a HOF-er and one during his first year in the league a person could see the flames of Leaf burning up from miles away. -

Shrill does not begin to describe it. What I think will happen is Beane will do his due diligence like any GM and make sure all the scenarios are worked through and the calls made to other GM's about what if regarding their slots. I think Beane waits until the day of the draft to make anymore moves and watches the draft unfold. If two QB's are off the board at picks 1 and 2 then he may move up to 3 to be sure to get his guy. If only one QB comes off by pick 4 and if Allen is still there when the Jets finish their selection then he makes a move to get in at 10 to pick Allen. There are no doubt more scenarios than that but those are my best guesses. -

I was going to say the same thing about it being a pretty good first round. The kind you don't see all that often. -
I think that McD and Beane really covet Smith and their moves will be made with Smith in mind.
-
Getting a guy like Allen at 10-13 would allow Beane to keep 12 for Raquon Smith and use 22 coupled with another high pick and lesser pick to get back up to 10-13 to get Allen. A win-win situation if Allen is not rushed to start.
-
It may be more likely that Allen could be had around the 10 spot with more teams answering their own QB questions so w/o pressure to move up in the top of the round Beane might keep his 12 and package 22 with one of our seconds and perhaps a sweetener pick to go up to 10 to get him. This way he gets LB Smith as well as a QB who can sit.

Someone Start New Buffalo Bills Message Board
RochesterRob replied to BuffaloBaumer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have it on good authority that the Bills can move up 2 using their newly acquired 12 plus the newly acquired 6th rounder. In all seriousness I get where you are coming from but some people have nothing to do all day. -
Keep in mind Kyle is for one year and we could get a rookie this year or next year who will take over for Kyle at some point and have that contract versus a fat vet contract.
-
True. This is all subject to supply and demand. If 3 or 4 teams are talking to the Giants for example it will take considerably more.

Yeah, she looks disappointed that she married a guy that has already made more than most here will make in a lifetime. I could handle that kind of disappointment if I were her.
