If you could go back in time to high school
RochesterRob replied to Just Jack's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I can relate to all that. A couple of times girls showed interest I thought that I was being put on so I showed polite indifference. Having accumulated knowledge of those women since those days the offers may have been legit. I was on academic probation during junior year of college and it did not help my advisor really never liked me to start with. I rebounded but AP did not help in terms of job hunting and faculty endorsements. The worst part was that I was trying but maybe should have seeked out more help. -

I think that a lot of us can relate to all that truth be told. I remember one time while at college (Alfred) and at a bar a girl comes up to me asking for two bucks worth of quarters. I gave her what she wanted and she gave two one dollar bills. What I did not really consider was the bartender and register (with no customers nearby) were barely to the back and the side of me so she was really hitting on me and she was fairly decent looking if not hot. -

I can relate to the clueless aspect as there were fairly few girls around me in terms of neighbors or relatives and most were 3-4 years younger while I was in high school so that had their learning to do as well. The men were fairly aggressive and that was not so much a problem when they were young but really was not the correct approach for my time and situation. -

If you can't stop the 9/11 attacks then it is most likely you are not going to pick stocks. But on that note I remember when I was at college when the Microsoft IPO was being made and a bunch of guys at my house were saying it was a sure thing. I had maybe 2,000 dollars in a savings account at the time so maybe instead of being 60/40 against buying I would have been 60/40 in favor and bought stock. So instead of knowing Microsoft was going to pan out due to magic it would have been a matter of trusting a few opinions so maybe change that for your premise. I wish that I had dated more but over two years during junior and senior year at college I dated six women. Trouble was nothing lasted past a month and usually only a couple of weeks. Maybe being a little more outgoing would have helped. Bought a snowmobile that was fairly new and sold it dirt cheap 6 years later as we had a bunch of dry winters in a row so I wished I had never spent that money that way. I wished I had been a little more hard lined with a family member on business as I would have been better off today for it. -
Kind off surprised that a WNY connection to Star Trek and kind of a patron saint to the series has not been mentioned to this point. There may have never been a Star Trek if Desilu Studios did not step up for production of the series. Desilu was owned completely by Jamestown's Lucille Ball when Gene Roddenberry came calling in 1964 and it was Lucy's decision to take on Star Trek. I've even seen pictures of her pitching in helping finish the Enterprise bridge set. Sadly, for Lucy Star Trek never gave her the profits she had hoped for as the show periodically went over budget during the first season. Probably was one of the straws on Desilu's back that forced a sale to Gulf and Western (Paramount) in 1967 half way through Star Trek's second season. From there the quality slipped notably.

Other than the Bronco's uni's all the AFL era uniforms were very sharp. I really miss the Oilers' gear whether AFL or the Campbell/Phillips era. -

Yeah, like incoherent statements. PTR : Pot is still illegal because it is. Politicians are too set in the status quo. Boehner (a politician) lobbying for the largest MJ company. Asserts that pot was very popular amongst Hispanics and Blacks during the 1920's and 30's. Asserts that Richard Nixon personally oversaw the schedule 1 process for MJ. Then denies that he made either statement. Was there anything close to a scientific study about MJ habits back generations ago? Did somebody spill the beans about Richard Nixon looking over all shoulders at the FDA? -

I'm not overly concerned and it means more food at the trough for guys like me that will not get weighed down by dependency. I'm not going to fight a hopeless battle and at the same time Darwin will take care off the ones that can't puff and function at the same time. I enjoy discussing it on venues such as this one and appreciate what others have to say even if they do not share my viewpoint. Peace Bro. Do what you want to do. I for one am not advocating kicking in your door or playing big brother. -

Both of your statements are more assertions than known facts. Maybe pot was big in certain minority communities but that does not that they were in all of them. Your statement about Nixon fits his character and one of his objectives but that is far from a smoking gun and to my knowledge nobody from the FDA has come forward with stories of direct Nixon interference decades after his administration. Anyways on both statements we are many decades after those respective times. I am more concerned as to how things are today. Criticism today is that drug laws are rooted in economic policies to benefit a white majority and I was pointing out the flaw in that theory. Bringing in minority drug offenders might be a land office business in Erie and Monroe Counties but the police and judicial systems in Cattaraugus, Allegany, Wyoming, Livingston, Steuben, etc. counties are skimping by on thin rations of those types of criminals. -

Why is it on schedule 1 then? At the time it was determined that there was no practical use for MJ. That was a function of the testing of the time which no doubt lacked money to test for various uses either by neglect or design. I could easily see neglect as no doubt at the time the federal government saw the future of medicine in the hands of Zeneca, Bayer, etc. so they saw no need to really investigate pot. Less a conspiracy to eradicate it and more taking the path of least resistance. I still doubt the intent of racial harassment at least on the legislative level. As of 2015 there were 197,000,000 Americans that identified themselves as white and 40,000,000 Americans that identified themselves as black. That means that the white population outpaces the black population by a factor of nearly 5. Is the rate of addiction constant between blacks and whites? No doubt variations exist based on environment among other factors. One might assume that addiction rates are higher among blacks if peripheral observations take them in that direction but at the same time it is extremely fair to admit evidence of white addiction if a person surveyed a given location such as the Rust Belt, upper Mid-West, and Appalachia to name a few locales and their observations led them to that conclusion. What I would doubt is black addiction at near 100 percent and white addiction at 20 percent which would put overall numbers at near equal at approximately 40M. What is far more likely is the usage is far higher than 20 percent in the white population and far far lower than 100 percent in the black population. Let's arbitrarily select rates of 40 percent for whites which I suspect is on the low side and 55 percent for blacks which is a little above half of the population and most likely still does not reflect what is actually occurring in black communities. The actual numbers based on those assumptions would put white users at nearly 80 million nation wide and black users at 22 million. If you buy the argument that the legal and prison systems are an economic engine then you only care about bodies with pulses which would be easier to obtain in the white population the bodies to fill the courts and the prisons. Are there unintended consequences on the enforcement end? Most likely so with perhaps manpower hours used to investigate drug crime much higher in black communities. Is there a coordinated effort between law enforcement agencies that promotes increased prosecution of blacks versus white I doubt. Is there over zealousness in terms of enforcement in black communities? Most likely so but don't know if we can accumulate the information to determine to what degree and if the rate is constant over the US. -

Beefing about MJ being on schedule 1 for racial and political reasons is straight out of the Democratic Party playbook. I would say that there are far far more pot users in terms of numbers with white Caucasian people. The man is trying to take away all your rights including blowing a fart in public. Damn Republicans! -

Actually, Gates, Jobs, Shakespeare, et. on down the line are cited quite a bit when the discussion is about pot promoting creativity. As far as those being the only ones most likely not but it seems you ran out of gas pretty readily on the discussion. I have no doubt that pot works for some people but doubt that it works for a majority of users. It's just a pattern I see that is independent of genetics, environment, etc.. I don't know of anybody shouting to the world about a great break through such as discovering warp drive and how pot lead them there. If your biggest downfall is stress then I see how it helps but then before you know it you are at the tripping point where waiting for the microwave for 4.5 minutes to warm dinner is stressful. Some of the most edgy (not in a good way) people I Knew were high frequency users of pot because they knocked their ability down to weather stress to a point where it seemed hard for them to function for the most basic tasks. -

Honestly, I feel the same in terms of setting the bar low so it is easier to compete. I guess that I played too many board games as a kid where it is all about seeking out any advantage possible to compete and not so much worrying about the greater good. -

It depends on whose data you want to use but if 50 percent of the adult population are users and you can only name a handful that is really not supporting the argument that MJ usage promotes success. Maybe before he kicks off Bill Clinton will admit to inhaling to help the cause. -

From where I am sitting not even two made it. The higher functioning ones have some type of job below their skill set and a lot of the others just lived with their parents. I agree with those that pot does not hit everybody the same and some are flat out predisposed to being lazy without the influence of drugs. I've seen much more of the negative than the positive plain and simple. -

Carbone bought his wife a mink. Johnny Roastbeef bought the Caddy. I'm surprised that Jimmy was so sloppy after he had Morrie chopped up. I would have thought Jimmy had a boat and just placed the remains in concrete and then dump somewhere off Long Island Sound. I guess Jimmy was not as smart as he thought he was. -

I don't know what you are getting upset about. I only mentioned women twice not several times which by most definitions is more than twice. How do you know that they are addicts when I have not mentioned that they are addicts? Further, I never said that I went to a dealer but just am recalling statements by others such as my SIL who confronted her hubby after being seen at a dealer's home. You have to admit in a business that is no doubt heavy in competition having a couple of good looking women around would give you a leg up on the competition for male clients. No? So if they quit "when younger for jobs" that would not be their first time if they do it in their 40's or 50's? I never said a person could not check out pot late in life if they have an illness that pot eases the pain for or even does more for the patient. I would question that among the tens of millions of users total (or more) that those medical users are a substantial percentage of the overall number. I am saying that if a person is healthy and has not gotten into it then it is not very probable to start late in life. -
The cost is higher to produce most organic foods such as milk and meat so that is reflected in the selling price at the store. To answer the question no I do not and is in large part that I have a set budget for groceries which is difficult to meet buying conventional products. I could flex my budget a little but I have a rule that 5-10 percent of my spending is on stuff I will use a few months in to the future versus the coming week. Soup has come down a little so I am buying a can or two intended for use during cold weather. I buy very little in terms of processed foods and will buy potatoes this week with the intent of making potato salad. Probably said more than most here want to know about.

I'd like to see a study 15-20 years down the road as there would be a generation with a different perspective as they would have never known it as illegal which might influence their perspective. Also, there is still a social stigma in using so I question the accuracy of surveys relating to illicit drugs. For most people their consumption habits have been pretty well established by their early 20's so if they are honest in a survey they will not reflect a change in conduct. It might make for an interesting movie on Lifetime but I would say somebody taking up pot for the first time while in their 40's or 50's has to be fairly rare. -

The point is there will be rules just like there are for tobacco and alcohol. And I am old enough to remember when there were far fewer rules for either of those two. Black market? Yeah, people will still like the idea of saving money because the black market does not collect sales tax. People drive 50, 60, or more miles to the reservation to buy tobacco cigarettes so there are people motivated by money when they make their purchases. The bottom line is that long term users of pot will not see their lifestyle change appreciably. You're not smoking a fatty in a movie theater or restaurant and you will feel at some point that it is criminal to pay 1.25-1.30 times the black market price at Walgreens where the woman behind the counter is 55 and has lost her looks along with being 40 pounds overweight. Plus you will be longing to see what the old dealer's SIL is sporting in terms of athletic bra and yoga pants.
