Yeah, that is not how I remember the 1970's as a kid. My mother was a good person but certainly was not happy-go-lucky like the TV mom. I think kids smoked or drank out in the garage assuming the man of the house was very infrequently out there. Yes, people are now hyper-focused on the selection process compared to a couple generations ago. In part due to disproportionate and increasing media resources allocated to it. We don't have the issues of a bad economy including crushing inflation, high gas prices, and a first go around with an unpopular war in Vietnam to compete for 30 minutes of your time 6:30 in the evening. Even today all the news and analysis worth covering could be done in an hour never mind a 24 hour around the clock saturation process.
