Fiftieth Anniversary of Apollo 11 Moon Landing
RochesterRob replied to SoTier's topic in Off the Wall Archives
It wouldn't be a matter of Von Braun faking it. There could have been a hangup in an area where he had little expertise such as deep space life support. The rub is when the government decides to fake a landing for a political agenda. Does he stay silent or speak out. He probably would have known he had a very short leash in terms of speaking out without being a target of the CIA for elimination. -
OK, but should it not be easy for the military to silence the media in the early stages of a civil war? Maybe I should not assume this but most likely the military will align with a right wing political body? Will it be a matter that the rank and file of the military really is not right wing in nature and will resist orders that puts them at odds with non-rightists. Thinking of people who joined out of high school because they have no place to go or ones that are using it for college purposes or general civilian trades. Ones that look at the military as an avenue as opposed to an ideal or a way of life. I'm far enough removed from youth that I don't get a lot of cross talk on new enlistments/ROTC anymore.

Explain your line of reasoning so I can understand.

With all the jamming equipment the military most likely has neutering the media should be as easy as baking pie.

So where does the moral high ground begin? Kamala's ancestors were slave owners and no doubt one under age female had to service an older (presumably) male. Shouldn't Kamala be doing her part in atoning for past sins of the family to come clean and admit this most likely happened. Should she not try to track down the descendants of those slaves to offer reparations? -
It would be a net "lose" for sure.

You're allowed only so many walk backs and she has used all hers up. A drawback if your schtick is the most intellectually polished candidate in the arena. People were/are willing to cut Trump slack on this because he is coming from not the world of politics or academia but main street. -

For starters you have to offer something to get people to switch and until now the GOP in that district had not done that. I'll admit the possibility is there that AOC will be struck by lightning and all of a sudden sound like a Rhodes Scholar. But the probability is AOC will most likely grow in terms of navigating DC but still be very unaware of things like economics as it applies to her district. Murray does not have a hard task when you think about it. All she has to say is if she was on guard when Amazon came calling that she would have let them in the door. -

People break with their party when it comes to Congress all the time. If Bernie had gone the Anderson or Perot route he would sliced pretty heavily into Hillary's 80 percent. Once you again you overlook AOC dropping the ball on Amazon and act as though her constituents won't care "because they did not want to work anyways." At some point people will want to rise in the world and they will realize that AOC does not have the edge there. The old days are over and you do not want to face that. -

Congress people can be in office for many decades while a POTUS has a maximum if re-elected of 8 years. Murray could be around for many POTUS administrations and she won't fumble the ball on Amazon which that district no doubt is aware off. Your logic still amounts to don't vote for the GOP because of whitey and we want freebies from the gubermint. That dog did hunt for a while but his legs have gotten pretty tired and he is looking to wander off into the woods to die. -

The only people that count in AOC's election are the people in her district and I doubt that annoying Trump and Pelosi is enough reason to give her a second go around. If Murray looks like the one to bring home the bacon for that district then the voter are not going to look away from that. Most of the recent Democratic history there traces back to "fear whitey" or "loath whitey" but whitey is no wheres to be found this time -

And if we checked we would probably find that all the candidates previous to AOC were white and most were male for the GOP. In a district that had been becoming very diverse socially for many decades. The GOP will spend heavily on AOC's opponent as they no doubt can see she is a tool for the media which has to be unsettling. The Jamaican immigrant is a heaven sent once in several generations opportunity that even the most bigoted GOP cigar chopper will not discard. -

The Dems could not push Hillary out earlier because she used her time as First Lady to accumulate intelligence on her Democratic opponents. Dick Nixon was smiling up from the bowels of the Earth at that. -

The 2020 Democratic Convention will be the litmus test for how much control the Clinton's have in that party. It's not Hillary's style but sitting on the sidelines keeps her time on Fox News and space in the Washington Examiner to a minimum at present which is helpful with the Epstein matter. She might have known several months ago that this was going to boil up and influenced her as to not making an early announcement as to running for POTUS, -

The GOP contender is not an old white guy. She is probably more identifiable with the people of that district than AOC is. -

What? Hillary won't be drafted at the convention? The Dems will have to go there as all of their other candidates are far worse in terms of ability to beat Trump. -

Not to keep beating on this but you also have a motivated political entity in the Soviet Union to say that you faked it and now for sure the Americans cannot be trusted. -

We'll just have to not fully agree then. The Apollo program would have been a full blown disaster for the US if it being faked had been revealed. Enough to change the course of history and I am pretty sure the Soviet Union at the time understood the stakes. -

Think of it this way. Well over 10,000 people were closely involved with NASA in the Apollo program. That is potentially 10,000 chances to spill the beans. Do you really think that not one person would blab about it being fake? Further, it would have been the achievement of the century for the communist world to make the Americans look like liars so I would have to think the KGB would have been waiting outside of every NASA-related building to offer a million dollars or more if they go to the media about such a fraud and then offer asylum. That's the cynicism that would have convinced me if I had any doubts before. -

You're thinking of Apollo 13 unless there is a movie covering the first landing I am unaware of. Apollo 13 was the aborted mission where the crew almost did not make it back to Earth. -

I was elementary school age when Apollo 11 made its landing. Nonetheless, I had an interest in the space program and remember due to my family visiting a relative I could not watch it while it actually happened. I saw maybe the last 15 minutes after they touched down but did see the full recap on the evening news. Pretty sure we watched it on NBC with Huntley-Brinkley. Too young to really appreciate Huntley-Brinkley and my political views were not even forming that young but it had to be nice to watch newsmen who presented the news and nothing more. I guess my memory is not too bad as I double checked the day of the week it happened and it was a Sunday just like I thought it was. -
One of my many interests is 1960's television and movies. I guess until today I had not poked around the right site to learn of his passing. Among his credits are Cool Hand Luke (Boss with no eyes), Dallas (Jock Ewing's buddy Punk Anderson), and Star Trek (Dr Van Gelder and Capt Tracey). Did a lot of other television with most of it being Westerns. Transitioned into the 1970's doing the Walton's as well as Dallas. Definitely a character actor but his performances always kept me paying attention. Deep gravelly voice was his trademark.

I know that times are tough for you but sipping Woollite while folding 4X women's bicycle shorts is not the answer.
