Free Agency News and Updates - around the league
DCOrange replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Funchess or Paul Richardson IMO -
$6-8 million for a guy that’s been legitimately terrible for a few years now is definitely not cheap. We all know the other 3 points, one of which I literally made in the post you’re quoting.

A little high considering his last couple seasons, but it's a one year deal and we have money to burn so who really cares? 1/4 on the free agent signings I feel pretty confident about, though this was easily the one I was most confident in.

The workaround is you can kick the can down the road on some of those guys. Might end up paying more for some of them in the long run but it also buys you time for contracts like Star’s to become waiveable. It certainly sounds like we should be preparing for a quiet free agency but that feels like a mistake on Beane’s part imo. -

Think you could argue almost all QBs are overpaid when they get paid their market value (outside of the elites), but FWIW, this is probably below his. Goff got more than this already. Wouldn’t really make sense for Dak to accept. -

Not sure I buy the Reader rumor but the guy reporting it is Aaron Wilson and he’s definitely reputable and is very connected with everything Houston-related. And he’d be a massive improvement from Star. -

Nah there’s no way his agent goes for that. Less than Goff got already. -
Justin Jefferson should be our WR target at 22

He’s viewed as a Round 2 guy now after his disappointing 40 time, skipping the other drills, and getting surgery. -
Name 3 FA WR who interest you...Go!

Gonna cheat and list 4: 1. Robby Anderson - don’t think I need to explain much. He’s a legitimately good starter if you can get past the personality. 2. Paul Richardson - can line up out wide and be an explosive playmaker when healthy. Has experience starting which I think is key this offseason. We’ve also been interested in the past. 3. Taylor Gabriel - basically McKenzie if McKenzie were good. 4. Devin Funchess - experience as a starter, red zone/contested catch target, Beane is/was a fan, would likely be a short and cheap deal. -

Funchess obviously wouldn't be an exciting addition, but they probably aren't looking for that in free agency as a WR anyways. Funchess has at least shown he can be moderately productive over the course of a full season. And for all the handwringing about his catch rate, his true catch rate in 2018 (since he was basically out the entire year in 2019) was higher than Robinson's this past season. Beane liked Funchess in Carolina, he'll likely be signing a very cheap and or 1 year deal (both of which are ideal), and he gives us a big and somewhat proven red zone target that we don't currently have on the team. Maybe more importantly, he gives us someone that we know is a capable starter when healthy so that we don't have to reach for a more pro-ready WR in the draft if we don't want to. Funchess isn't my #1 target for FA WRs but bringing him in would make a lot of sense and probably moreso than Robinson IMO. -

1st rounder tender is roughly $5 million, but point is, he'll be back in New Orleans because nobody is giving up a 1st round pick and that's apparently how New Orleans wants it. -
Ekeler and Chargers agree to long term deal

Yeah, Gordon definitely will not be back in LA. -

Just curious what your WR rankings are since you and I seem to see things pretty similarly in general. I think we view Jefferson mostly the same way but I'd still be willing to consider him in the first round. Not my preferred choice but I think he's worth considering based on who will likely be available at 22. -

I agree. Just guessing Gordon will get more. -
Jets Quinnen Williams Arrested in NY
DCOrange replied to BruceVilanch's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, that's all the detail he gave us. Feel like if there was an illegal search, Q's lawyer would have led off with that instead of saying something along the lines of it being a harmless mistake and that it'll be sorted out soon. -

Curious to see how much more Gordon ends up getting. This contract is roughly the max I'd be comfortable giving to a RB (unless they're an all-around weapon like McCaffrey). -

FWIW (I'm assuming my friend is misinformed), a friend of mine works at the airport and was there when this all went down. He says Quinnen had the gun in his checked baggage and one of the workers at the airport saw it was an athlete and illegally went through his bag and found the gun and then it turned into this. -

I mean, 6'1", 4.43 speed, and statistically the best in the class at making contested catches is pretty much exactly what you would think the Bills are looking for. The question is if he can do it outside after mostly feasting on people in the slot. I won't try to defend Shenault; he's a 2nd or 3rd round prospect to me. -

Jefferson and Shenault are not small and are not burners. Ruggs is, but the level of playmaking that Ruggs can bring to the team is a total game-changer, probably moreso than any other WR that is within our grasp. I think Ruggs will require a trade-up though and I'm not really in favor of that. But long story short, Ruggs will put pressure on defenses every single snap he's on the field and that just isn't the case with Brown and Beasley; Ruggs is the kind of player that can be the key to your offense due to what he can do with the ball as well as what he can do without it. I don't think Jefferson and Shenault are similar to him at all. -

I don't think he's very similar to Zay, but the same concern of how he translates to playing outside is definitely there. There's a chance he ends up just being a better version of Jordan Matthews or something, which would have value but would be a disappointing 1st round pick. He's definitely among the group of probably 3 WRs that I would consider at 22 though: Jefferson, Reagor, and Higgins (pending his pro day).
