Buffalo Bills Offseason Primer. State of the Bills.
DCOrange replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great post. Some ramblings from myself on some of this: I think I agree with pretty much everything you said regarding the free agents. The one potential sticking point for me is McKenzie; I think it would be wise to try to get some sort of deal done with him just in case, but for me, replacing him in the offense is one of my top priorities this offseason. I think the role he plays is an important one, but he's just too limited IMO; good at the jet sweeps but pretty much worthless at actual WR things. We can find someone in the draft that can replace his skills while potentially being a much bigger factor operating as a real WR IMO. Guys like Kadarius Toney, Rondale Moore, Tutu Atwell, etc. I think I might be willing to go a bit higher than you on Milano, but ultimately, I think he probably prices himself out of Buffalo. Guessing we will bring Daryl Williams back but not sure it's the right move to make personally. Moving John Brown one way or another makes a lot of sense IMO. I don't expect much back in a trade as I think teams will call our bluff knowing he's likely getting cut if we don't get a trade done, but I'd still take a day 3 pick for him and call it a day. I agree with your assessments on the DLine and the safeties. I think I'd probably try to keep Hughes with a restructure and be fine moving on from the rest of the DLine. I had brought up this point re: the safeties last year in the lead-up to the draft, which is why I was in support of taking guys like Dugger, Winfield, and Chinn. I expect we'll be moving on from at least one of our safeties by next offseason, so once again, I think it would be wise to get their eventual replacement in house, preferably via the draft. Agreed re: Edmunds; pick up the option, let him prove himself worthy of a big contract. He seems poised to get a big contract just due to his accolades and age but it makes me super nervous personally. I think you're probably right about Allen, but for the amount of money he's going to get, it's going to make me uneasy until I see him play this way another season. I loved him throughout the draft process and obviously still love him now (as I think we all do at this point), but I'm going to be a bit nervous about regression next year knowing that we're probably about to make him the highest paid player in the league or close to it. Some positions of importance this offseason IMO: WR - Already discussed this re: McKenzie/Brown so won't rehash it here. RB - I mentioned this in one of the other threads, but I think I'd probably look to bring in one of the pass-catching RBs in free agency this offseason and there's a bunch of them available. Jamaal Williams, James White, Rex Burkhead, Tevin Coleman, etc. I wouldn't bother spending another early draft pick on a RB personally; guys like the ones mentioned above will sign cheap enough that relative to the draft pick that I'd rather just take the certainty of getting a good one that fits our needs. Jamaal Williams is the #1 option IMO but he'll probably be the most expensive if I had to guess. CB - A strong contender to be our day 1/2 pick. I agree with you that we need a more versatile corner opposite Tre. D-Line - Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens with Star but I assume he'll be back next year. If so (and probably even if he doesn't come back), edge rusher is the bigger hole and also probably more difficult to fill unfortunately. There are some solid pass rushers available in free agency this year but we aren't exactly flush with cap space so it'll be tough to sign any of the top guys. I don't know much about the position in the draft this year, but from what I've read, it sounds like another blah year for edge rushers so we might be out of luck. -
Given how successful the OLine was in terms of pass protection this year, I'm not really sure how much I want to shake it up. Their struggles opening up running lanes were apparent, but a part of me thinks we'd be better off just leaning into our passing game and bringing in a 3rd back that's more of a weapon out of the backfield. Guys like James White, Jamaal Williams, LeVeon Bell, Tevin Coleman, Rex Burkhead, etc. are available in free agency this offseason, probably won't break the bank, and would give us something we certainly lack from Singletary and may lack from Moss (though I think he's far more promising as a pass-catcher than Singletary). I personally am not in a rush to bring in a more talented runner than the two we already have, though Singletary's regression this year was definitely alarming. If he can't make people miss the way he did as a rookie and in college, he's not contributing on the field at all so they're going to need to re-evaluate him this offseason and figure out if something significant changed this year, if he had a nagging injury we didn't know about/wasn't in good shape, or if they think he just had a bad year and will bounce back.

Obviously depends on price and all that, but my initial feelings of it (not what we WILL do but what I would do): DE Trent Murphy - gone TE Tyler Kroft - gone LB Matt Milano - would like to keep but might get priced out CB Josh Norman - gone or camp body OL Ty Nsekhe - gone OL Jon Feliciano - keep OL Brian Winters - gone WR Andre Roberts - gone OL Daryl Williams - would like to keep QB Matt Barkley - don't care RB Taiwan Jones - gone RB TJ Yeldon - gone S Dean Marlowe - gone or camp body WR Isaiah McKenzie - trying to replace him this offseason but open to giving him a camp deal until we get an actual replacement in house CB Levi Wallace - keep LB Andre Smith - don't care

I think the draft is the obvious place to add a WR at this point if we do tinker with the position. It's not at the top of my list of biggest priorities this offseason, but I would like to continue adding young talent to the WR group and I think it's worth consideration even with our 1st round pick. I haven't scouted much at all yet, but I'd be aiming to replace McKenzie in the offense. Brown could theoretically be replaced via a larger role for Gabriel Davis if we ultimately cut him; different skill set but that's where Davis would slot in. I'd like to add a guy that can do all the fun stuff that we do with McKenzie while also being an actual wide receiver. The two I've seen so far that fit that would be Kadarius Toney and Rondale Moore (I think there's another similar guy that Jeremiah mentioned in his first mock draft but I haven't seen him at all yet). Toney would be an option with our 1st round pick. Moore is currently viewed as a Day 2 option; he was incredible, arguably the best we've ever seen from a true freshman at WR, but he's only played 7 games the last 2 seasons soooooo yeah... Tampa has two guys that are probably top 10 WRs in Evans/Godwin, plus Antonio Brown who is still very good. At TE they have Gronk and Brate (and the injury-riddled OJ Howard), all of whom would be upgrades over our best TE. I disagree with Tampa having "a lot more" but I do think their weapons are clearly better and more plentiful.

I'm not re-watching the game so I can't cite the specifics, but Romo was constantly pointing out that Allen had checkdowns available that he just wasn't taking. The clips they showed of our WRs being blanketed were generally 1 on 1 coverage with no safety help; those are all favorable situations for our WRs, particularly with Diggs. He also just wasn't as precise throwing the ball as usual, including a likely TD to Diggs before the INT to Brown if he had given him a better pass. Again, Allen was incredible this season, our team had an amazing year and we're in good hands moving forwards. I'm not even really mad that we lost last night and I'm not blaming the game on Allen by any means. He just had a rough game in what had been an incredible season. Looking forward to seeing what our front office does this offseason to fill in some important holes.

As a rookie (and in college), Singletary's elusiveness was elite. This year, we didn't really see any of that. He's always struggled in terms of pass protection and catching the ball; the drop yesterday wasn't surprising. He's did the same in college and the same as a rookie. But he's always been really tough to get on the ground once he gets the ball in his hands and that didn't seem to be the case this year at all.
-
Seems like he's a pretty likely casualty. I'd be very interested in getting a good WR that can do the McKenzie sweeps and whatnot this offseason as well. Someone like Kadarius Toney or Rondale Moore in the draft would be ideal IMO if they go in that direction.

Deshaun Watson prefers the Jets
DCOrange replied to BuffaloBills1998's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not sure if it was posted in here or not, but Matt Miller tweeted that he reached out to a bunch of sources and was told that the Jets are absolutely not at the top of Watson's list (which passes the smell test much more than the Miami Herald report IMO). -
Detriot Lions and Stafford to part ways this offseason
DCOrange replied to Wayne Cubed's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would imagine Indy, San Fran, and New England are the most likely to pursue Stafford. Wouldn’t be surprised if all of them offer their first round picks. -
Which AFCE Competitor will draft a QB First?
DCOrange replied to RoyBatty is alive's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would guess the Patriots are the most likely of the 3 to draft a QB. Sounds like the Jets plan to move forward with Darnold. I'm not really sure what Miami will do; I wouldn't be surprised if they took a QB but at the moment I would guess they do not. -
Brian Daboll named Assistant Coach of the Year by PFWA
DCOrange replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Associated Press is generally considered the "official" Coach of the Year award isn't it? I don't think they've named one yet, but Stefanski is obviously a strong contender for it along with McD and LaFleur IMO. -
It doesn't really fit the narrative, but it was also pretty common knowledge that both Syracuse and Buffalo wanted Hackett canned and Marrone constantly went to bat for him.

Really curious to see where the Colts pivot to next. Wentz would make a lot of sense given the connection with Reich, but the Eagles are at least portraying themselves as wanting to keep Wentz and build around him with a new coach. Likewise with the Jets and Darnold. I can't imagine Houston would trade Watson to a division rival so he's probably not a real consideration there. They could theoretically go young and target Tua if the Dolphins really plan to move on from him so soon though Indy obviously has the money to sign someone as well so who knows. Also curious to see if they believe in Jacob Eason or not. He was viewed as a potential 1st round pick for awhile before he ultimately slid to the 4th.

The Saints will be almost $100M over the salary cap next year!
DCOrange replied to Doc's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It actually puts them in an even bigger financial hole if they cut him. They can restructure his deal to save cap as I alluded to in my post but outright cutting him would put them over $100 million in the hole I believe. -

It's going to be an ugly offseason and probably ugly few years for them, but a lot can be fixed (at least in the short-term) with restructures and some obvious cut/trade candidates. So right now, they appear to be about $95 million over the cap (not to mention they need to add players in order to field a full roster) Brees retires: $13.5 mil Cam Jordan restructure: $9.6 mil Michael Thomas restructure: $8.9 mil Terron Armstead restructure: $6.8 mil Taysom Hill trade: $12.1 mil Janoris Jenkins June Cut: $10 mil Kwon Alexander cut: $13.4 mil Andrus Peat restructure: $6 mil Ryan Ramczyk extension: $8.1 mil Marshon Lattimore extension: $7.4 mil (or potentially trade for over $10 mil) Nick Easton cut: $6 mil Malcom Brown cut: $5 mil Emmanuel Sanders June Trade: $8 mil These moves get New Orleans to roughly $5 mil in cap space while still needing to add 15 players to the team.
