Cooper Kupp leaving the Rams. Want him?
MrEpsYtown replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall
He probably isn't really what they need, but he is a very good fit for what they do. Josh Allen seems to really prey on defenses in that 10-25 yard range. Kupp is that short-intermediate guy and he feasts there. We have those guys in Shakir, Kincaid. While we all want that downfield stretch threat, they simply do not run a lot of those routes. Now is that a chicken in the egg type scenario? Do they not stretch the field because of their personnel? Because Brady certainly stretched the field at LSU. Kupp is a fit, but I am not sure they go down that road. -
Now that's truly WWE talk. Best Royal Rumble of all time! One night only! It's all a work!

I really wish we would actually draft BPA and not for need. That is why we don't have any blue chippers aside from Josh. I know Beane says they draft BPA, but they do not. Let me preface this by saying I like Keon Coleman and he will eventually be very good IMO. I know it's easy to say in hindsight, the trade down was fine last year, but Cooper DeJean was just sitting there, a blue chip DB prospect. To me, DeJean was a top 10-15 pick who fell. Mike Sainristil was there, T'Vondre Sweat, Braden Fiske. Those guys could have all helped us in that KC game. I think they cornered themselves into having to take a WR in round 1 and they kind of lost sight of things. What is insane is that they had an entire day to think it over and still drafted for need. Hey Josh, we are taking a wide receiver in the first round, which one do you want? That's how we are building our draft board? It's just so short-sighted. They could have easily grabbed one of those defensive guys and maybe drafted Jalen McMillan or Troy Franklin later. The irony is that both those guys made some flashes as deep down-field threats, field stretchers, the kind of guys fans feel this team needs. Late first-round picks are for drafting guys who the rest of the league was too stupid on and they fell. When the Steelers drafted Watt they had an older James Harrison, Bud Dupree...Watt was coming in as a rotational guy...was it a need? Sure, but it wasn't their most immediate need. The Bills need to be thinking BPA and nothing else. There is not enough true talent on this team for them to continue to draft for need. Plug holes in free agency and please actually draft BPA.

Opinion: Bills SHOULD hire Doug Pederson as assistant HC
MrEpsYtown replied to MrEpsYtown's topic in The Stadium Wall
The basis of this idea was not about wins-loses or accomplishments. No one on our staff has accomplished anything ever really. Peterson has won a SB as a head coach, and been there as a player as a backup QB in Green Bay...more than we can say for pretty much anyone on our staff. I think Aaron Kromer is the only one with a SB as an assistant. So wins-loses have nothing to do with my thought process. The basis of the idea was to have a guy who has worked very closely under Reid both as an OC and a player which gives him a unique skill set/experience. A deep amount of knowledge of that offense, more than most around would have. He knows more about Reid than McDermott or Nagy or Bienemy or any of those other guys. He has a unique connection and perspective that in theory could help us get over the hump IMO. -
Thoughts on Elijah Molden as a safety fit here?
-
You will get Donte Jackson and you will like it! I kid, kind of. I just don't see them shelling out money for a top corner like that. To me, the play is to spend on a safety like Jevon Holland. IMO, the safety position in this defense is just so much more important than corner and I don't see them spending on a top corner. At corner I see a buy-low upside play like Eric Stokes or Kritsian Fulton.

I agree with this take. You have the most explosive athlete at the position of all time and he's been neutered beyond belief into a game manager. I wish I could see what he would be like with Andy Reid, Sean McVay. Even a guy like Kliff Kingsbury...guys who coach to their player's strengths. It's like Dan Reeves coaching John Elway...it took Mike Shanahan to get Elway to that championship level. Reeves was so old-fashioned and stubborn and risk-averse and it held Elway back. Once Reeves was gone, Shanahan and Elway were able to open it up to fit Elway's strengths. We are living that same reality now. And that's why I am in the move on camp. Reeves had 10 years with Elway, never won the big one. But at least they got to the Super Bowl in year 4. 10 years and 3 Super Bowl loses and a number of AFC west championships for a stubborn, conservative coach who was holding back one of the best players of all time.

Opinion: Bills SHOULD hire Doug Pederson as assistant HC
MrEpsYtown replied to MrEpsYtown's topic in The Stadium Wall
My gut tells me they were so super hard-pressed to get that 3rd rounder back that they never tried to trade up. I guess we will never know, but that thinking is really short-sighted and unfortunate. -

MrEpsYtown replied to MrEpsYtown's topic in The Stadium Wall
So my thought process here isn't about a head coach who beat the Chiefs. Antonio Pierce beat the Chiefs last year. Bradon Staley beat them. Nate Hackett nearly beat them as head coach of the Broncos and Nate is probably the worst HC in the history of the NFL. Lost by 3 actually...sound familiar? That to me is a very simplistic way of looking at a very complicated game. I'm talking about having a guy in the building who could likely help prepare the team to play against a guy with whom he has pretty deep knowledge. -
Yes. He just doesn't give you enough for the price.

MrEpsYtown replied to MrEpsYtown's topic in The Stadium Wall
Totally hear that. And I think it's unfortunate and ego-driven. I know it's an ego-driven profession, but if there is a guy out there doing nothing right now who could help this team get over the hump they should totally consider it. Hopefully, we see some sort of fresh/different approach here. -

So to me McDermott’s and Pederson’s relationship to Reid is quite different. McDermott was on Reid’s staff for ten years starting as a quality control coach and working up the ladder. But he was only DC for a year and a half before he got fired. He learned under Jim Johnson who got sick with cancer and was named interim DC when Jim was sick. He was then named DC after Johnson passed, which I think Andy had to do. Reid fires him a year later. Again he is spending all of his time on the defensive side of the ball. Aside from Johnson, McDermott’s other influences are Ron Rivera, Dick Jauron, Spags, and John Harbaugh. All in all 10 years working for Andy with a year and a half as DC. Pederson played for Reid for 4 years, in Green Bay and in Philadelphia. When Reid got his first head coaching job the first free agent he gets his hands on is Pederson to help him build culture and so he can be the bridge quarterback for whomever they drafted, turned out to be McNabb. After retiring, Pederson winds up working for Reid and working up the ladder, offensive quality control, quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator. He follows Reid to KC. In 2015, after a terrible start, Reid gives play calling duties to Pederson and they win 10 games in a row which earns Pederson a shot at his own HC gig where he wins a Super Bowl. So Doug Pederson played for Andy for 4 years and coached under him for 7, in total 11 years working together. I would venture to say, McDermott’s and Pederson’s experiences under Andy Reid were quite different. In simple terms, one guy coaches defense and one guy coaches offense. Numbers are just that, numbers, but when you dig into the details, if there is a guy out there who has deep knowledge on how Andy Reid thinks, it’s probably Doug Pederson, and that was the basis of my opinion here. -
Whatever people think about Doug Pederson, he has been around Reid and Spags for a very long time. He gives you a guy who has won Super Bowls, and has deep, deep knowledge of Andy’s offense. He could serve a multitude of roles, not only could he be a sounding board for Joe Brady and Josh Allen, he could be even more useful to Bobby Babich by working with him on ways Reid will attack his scheme. He could help identify the shortfalls we have and help the defense get prepared for their arch nemesis. Pederson is not going to get a HC job in this cycle, and if there is anyone who really truly knows how Reid thinks, it’s him. Going all the way back to his days in Green Bay as Brett Farve’s backup, as well as coaching under him in various places, Doug may be able to get us over the hump. I understand that this brain trust isn’t going anywhere, so I am trying to think of ways we can improve this year on the coaching side, bringing in a hired gun like Pederson is something I hope the Bills consider. It also helps Doug rebuild his reputation after being so terrible in Jacksonville. He is said to be a pretty loyal guy, so is he willing to help McDermott and company overcome his mentor in Reid? Only time will tell.

Moving up for and drafting Cody Ford that year just ruined that draft and kept them from adding those WR in round 2. They also passed on Terry McLaurin that year. They also passed on Maxx Crosby despite having two third rounders. They also took a LB who never played a down for them, and a safety who ran a 4.7. One of the many issues with this regime is they draft for need and plug holes instead of taking BPA.

For sure taking DeJean there was the move. He was a perfect fit. Again hindsight being what it is, trading down, grabbing DeJean and then trying to trade back up for Adonai Mitchell or Jalen McMillan would have been ideal. It is what it is.

This is the key argument. Us as fans can go back and forth. And we can all agree to disagree. I want a championship and I don't see that coming. This regime has proven that they don't have what it takes to get there. Yes being good is way better than 17 years of garbage. But enough is enough and it's time for a change.

So here's the thing, and ofcourse I might be wrong, but next year will be very disappointing. I think this 4th loss to the Chiefs will be so debilitating that we go through a hangover year and struggle a bit and don't sniff the AFC championship game. Like next year is gonna be the year many were expecting this year. That step back. You still have the Chiefs, Healthy Burrow, the Pats will be much better, Herbert second year with Harbaugh, Stroud, Lamar, Denver will be better, the Raiders if they get a QB somehow will be better with Carroll, the Steelers are always a threat. AFC is shifting and Bills will likely get left behind if they don't make changes. Buffalo and this brain trust has just gotten stale and have not gotten the job done. I just don't see an avenue where that changes. After that disappointing year, at that point, I think these guys are done.

Go all in for Jevon Holland or Syracuse alum Andre Cisco. Either are a perfect fit. Holland has given us fits over the years. He tackles and is a former corner with great ball skills and is still just 25 years old. It also hurts the Dolphins to take him away. At corner, as a buy low, maybe they go after often injured Eric Stokes who they apparently loved pre-draft. I have always really liked Byron Murphy as a fit here, but I am not sure if they spend the money. I always thought Murphy would be a great safety convert as well.

Do Bills players think they can beat the Chiefs?
MrEpsYtown replied to FireChans's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think he was a scapegoat. But spending that year under Dick Jauron senior advisor seemed to make McDermott forget everything Jim Johnson taught him. Somehow, Steve Spangnoulo remembers. -
good comments from Bills players in this new Athletic piece

It sucks. It's coaching purgatory. Our best hope is Reid retires eventually.
