A couple of interesting nuggets on Jones. So I assumed that a lot of what he was saying in that quote about scheme fit was him posturing to get to a 4-3 team, but looking deeper into things, I am not sure that is it and I may be wrong. His best season was in 2017 as an outside backer in James Bettcher's 3-4 scheme. He had 17 sacks and was runner up for defensive player of the year, as well as a first team all pro. Bruce Arians leaves, and Steve Wilks comes in. One must remember that Wilks runs McDermott's scheme. There are articles stating that Jones had to get "used to putting his hand in the dirt etc." Jones stated that it was easier to play defensive end than playing OLB and he gained a bit of weight for it. The last time he had played defensive end was in New England. Then he had a bit of a down year under Wilks, but to be fair, the whole team was awful. Fast forward a year and Wilks is fired and there are articles about how Jones is happy to return to a 3-4 and play OLB under Vance Joseph and how excited he is to play with Terrell Suggs who Jones believes will keep double teams off of him. My conclusions, based on everything I have read are: He wants to win, but he already has a Super Bowl so that is not his main goal He wants to set the edge and rush the passer. Whether it is a 3-4 or a 4-3, he wants to play in a scheme that will allow him to attack. He wants to play in a place where there are other good pass rushers so that he doesn't have to face double teams. So a couple of things, while I thought this was very real possibility at first, I am starting to think he will only come here if he is truly being pulled to play in his near his hometown. If he comes here and we win a SB he will forever be remembered as a legend in these parts and across the league, as opposed to a great player who got a lot of sacks and had a hall of fame career but didn't really make that impact. Come to Buffalo, help us win a SB, and you are immediately a legend. His lack of production in Steve Wilks' defense is very worrisome as he may not have positive thoughts from that year. The guy who "maximized" Chandler Jones is James Bettcher who is coaching in Cincinnati Most of the rest of the coaches from that staff including Bob Sanders OLB coach are in Tampa The defensive line coach from Arizona during that time is Brentson Buckner and he is in Jacksonville Nathaniel Hackett, new Denver coach was the OC when Jones was at the Cuse The Steelers make a ton of sense to play opposite TJ Watt and still be relatively close to home, plus there is the presence of Brian Flores In 2021, The Steelers had the most sacks as a team Patrick Graham was his DL coach in New England. He is now the DC in Vegas. I could see Jones going there and playing opposite Maxx Crosby The Jaguars, Bengals, Raiders, Steelers, and Broncos have cap space Tampa does not have cap space, but I do think that may be his best fit schematically and he could play with Shaq Barrett Again this is a mix of opinion and fact, but the fact that Jones would be the main attraction here on a d line that is in the middle of the pack in terms of sacks gives me pause in terms of the fit. Unless he feels that playing with Oliver and Rousseau will get him one on ones.

There should be a pinned thread on how the salary cap works etc. That thread may wind up being longer than the infamous Zay Jones thread!

Edit! McKenzie is back on a 2 year deal worth 4.4 million
MrEpsYtown replied to BillsMafi$'s topic in The Stadium Wall
I doubt it. He has never done anything to deserve this contract. He was available last season for nothing and no one wanted him. Then he got benched, then had a big game vs the Patriots. That is pretty much it. He’s Jakeem Grant with less speed and less return ability. -

Sure. That’s fine. I don’t have a problem with his speed. But he isn’t as fast as Sanders. If everything stays as is and Sanders is gone, team speed has gone down. I like Davis and I get that he had a huge breakout game. I want to see more before I anoint him. -
Yeah i think this makes a ton of sense. They must see the crazy upside of Engram. He could be a Deebo Samuel type of weapon if he is used that way. He is bigger and faster. Having Knox in the lineup allows the Bills the luxury to do a lot of crazy stuff with Engram.

Yeah I don’t love that. I think it is clear the team needs more speed. Just re-signing McKenzie doesn’t help. and replacing Sanders with Davis actually makes us slower. So yeah I kind of hate it. So I guess it depends on what they do in the draft. I prefer a DJ Chark type, bigger guy with speed to burn. -

His girl needs to put down the meth. And is that Evan Engram? I kid I kid. Just bumpin -
That McKenzie number actually bothers me more than 9 million of Engram. 🤷♂️
-
With the McKenzie signing, an Engram signing actually makes more sense. It could be like a slot job share between the two. Engram can play outside too. Is McKenzie at 4 mil plus Engram at 9 million better than Kirk at 15? I don’t know. But I like Engram, who like McKenzie ran a 4.42 at 6-3, 240. I really have no problem adding him, but I would be upset if it keeps us from signing Knox long term.

Breaking: Tom Brady will play this year with Tampa

They also stand to lose some key guys on their defense, so it seems to be heavy lifting, unless guys take discounts to go play with him. -

Well when Kirk Cousins makes like 40 million, it makes sense to come back. But no Ali Marpet and Jensen and Cappa are free agents. And Donovan Smith still blows. -

I hear ya. But its a projection, and you can get a guy in the draft for a lot cheaper if you are willing to project. He doesn’t move the needle for me. I am excited to see what else they do. -

He is nowhere close to Hill. McKenzie and his 4.42 speed at his size is really not a big deal. Beasley ran a 4.49. He is shifty, but McKenzie ain’t anywhere close to Hill. I think he has a role, but he isn’t a game breaker. I think this is an overpay. -
I’d go Eddie Goldman, Akiem Hicks, or Jarran Reed as run stoppers. I also like Taven Bryan, but he’d be a rotational piece similar in style to Ed Oliver.
-
Probably in the next tier, but Austin Corbett makes a lot of sense

Slight overpay, but good to secure the guy if they are getting an idea of the prices out there. Never loved his game, but I’m good with it. -
Bills' traits players in later draft rounds - Troy Andersen
MrEpsYtown replied to Lothar's topic in The Stadium Wall
I am glad they met with Smith and Andersen. Leo Chenal is a good one too. He’s a thumper, so I think a lot of people are surprised he tested this well. Definitely the more polished linebacker. Brandon Smith is my draft crush, but I would be good with Anderesen, Chanel, or Chad Muma. I like the Georgia guys too. -
Dude can ball. If he gets paired up with a bad QB it will be a huge letdown. Its a slight overpay in a league where Nelson Agohlor and Corey Davis make 12 million.

I think they really tried to make the Ike Boettger thing work. I think when they waived him and KC grabbed him it made this regime think that Ike was like a shiny thing. And I think he played alright, but his presence is kind of why Teller was let go. So they really tried to force things there imo. I like Ike, but I like Bates more. Feliciano was a B. Johnson guy and Ford was a #2 pick. Right now Teller and Bates should be our starting guards but it is what it is. Bates’ versatility kind of hurt him in a weird way. It kept him on the roster as a swiss army knife, but kept him off the field because if he is a starter, he has to focus on one position.

Barkley is a bell cow. You have to feed him carries to really get the most out of him. While he is better than CMC, I don’t think he gives you the same sort of flexibility. I would love to have him, but if you get him, you have to feed him.
-
I think they did have to overpay for Morse. There were multiple teams in on centers that year, with Paradis being the other guy, and you had to convince him to leave KC. Morse also gave Allen a level of stability that I think really helped the QB develop. Pairing a young QB with a ***** center is one of those things that is overlooked, but can be pretty significant.

I like the combo of Singletary and CMC better. You can even play those two guys together, since McCaffrey is such a good receiver. And they complement Allen well. If you get Barkley, he becomes the focal point of the offense, and I do not want to see that. Everything we do should run through Josh.
