If the only time you ever saw Josh play was against the Dolphins, then you would think he is cocky and arrogant because he kicks their asses every time and has a big smile on his face doin it. Them Dolphins fans don’t know Josh the way we do.

I like Anderson too. But outside of Lloyd I think it’s kind of pick your flavor. I’d love for you to share some more details on your thoughts on that group.

I think it depends what team. If he played the Giants, Broncos or Colts or something drafted him, or the Bucs didn’t trade down I could live with it. If he were a Jet, a Cowboy, a Patriot, Dolphin, Steelers etc I would not be a fan. I really liked Patrick Mahomes, but he’s turned into a bit of a Brady douche. I love Justin Herbert. Said from day 1 I would have taken him over Tua and Burrow, and I still stand by that. He’s probably my favorite QB outside of JA right now. So if the Chargers are on, I’m rooting for them. I was always a huge Drew Brees guy. Loved McNabb before he became a little douchey. I loved Drew Bledsoe even though he was a Pat. I can’t tell you how excited I was when we traded for him. I always liked Eli and Peyton.

I want to use a first on a corner. When it comes to vets, Haden to me is soft, and Bouye should be a safety. Fuller, idk, the situation in Denver seems weird, but I tend to blame Fangio.

Well he is a former Panther. And played for John Butler in Houston. I prefer Kyle Fuller if we are talking vet players.

I agree with your premise and good work on the front end. But then you drafted a hybrid safety/nickelback in Hill and a nickel whose value is as a return guy in Jones. So you still need two outside corners. 🤷‍♂️ I guess some analysts feel that Hill could play outside, but its a projection. I would love Jones as a return guy and back up nickel.

Josh took over becuase Peterman was so bad in week 1 that the experiment was over and he was benched. Great points on Singletary and Johnson. I forgot how much we used Frank Gore! Knox, while technically not starting, (Lee Smith) Knox was getting the highest number of snaps, or splitting snaps at the position, and we also played a lot of 3 wide. Like in 2012, Greg Hardy did not start right away for Carolina but played 80% of the snaps week 1. So Joe using the word starter while implying these guys weren’t relied upon from day 1 is semantics and journalistic BS. Tremaine for sure and Tre White as you mentioned. Zay Jones, Cody Ford. I still disagree with the premise of the article. I think the reliance on rookie starters depends on a number of factors and I think Joe B. painting the brush implying that McDermott doesn’t rely on rookies is kind of silly. And I agree with your last paragraph. A lot of people here have kind of analyzed the concept of drafting for need vs BPA. But it all depends on how they put their board together. Do they put a higher emphasis on corner as it is a need? Are those grades higher? In my mind Stingley, Gardner, Booth, McDuffie are instant starters. If any of them are there at 25, I feel like they are the pick. If Stingley is there in the teens I think a trade up could happen. If McDuffie and Booth make it to the early 20s, I could see a mini trade up. If all those guys are gone, or some high caliber player somehow drops I could totally see them pivot, unless they love Elam or Gordon. But to me the most likely scenario is corner round 1. I don’t think it is a complete guarantee, but their board and BPA always seems to conveniently match with need (stuck out on the board and all that). They seem to draft the highest player on their board every time, at least according to Beane. So I feel like their board is built with an emphasis on need.

There are actually a bunch of people who think we are fine with Dane Jackson and a recovering Tre White. 🤷‍♂️

I went back and watched some of out game vs the Titans. Quessenberry looked pretty good against Jerry Hughes, et al, but who didn’t? Quessenberry looked good in double teams and walling off on the backside. Didn’t look like a liability imo.

I like Brisker too! Kerby Joseph is interesting. Its crazy. Agreed, but it is definitely a bridge we will have to cross at some point. Unless both guys take a pay cut you really can’t keep the tandem together. I will say this, Poyer is a great fir here in this scheme and may not be a great fit elsewhere. That is the elephant in the room imo. He is slightly under paid, middle of the pack, top 15 salary. He should probably be closer to top 10-12. But Hyde is better. So somebody probably has to go at some point, and this is a good draft to find the way cheaper replacement.

Trying to figure out which safety I like the most. I do really like Cross. Really interesting guy and a good fit for what we do. Pitre is interesting as a McDermott buddy Dave Aranda guy. But he was essentially the nickel in the 4-2-5 base. Could Pitre project as an eventual Poyer relacement? He actually reminds me a bit of Poyer in terms of his play style. He’s a bit faster, they are essentially the same size.

And Wyatt Tel…oh, ugh.

I think The Giants as well. I agree. I think it can be learned. He is a really interesting piece of clay that’s for sure. Just to add, what Chenal does well, would be completely wasted here.

Chenal is a beast, and tested way better than people thought. He is a monster blitzing and stopping the run. But when you watch those highlights, he really isn’t doing anything we ask our backers to do. So its a projection, but I don’t think he is what these guys are looking for. That Bear front is something team just don’t do in the NFL. I think he is a 3-4 typing attacking defense ILB. Jmo. I could tell you this, I’d rather Chenal than a RB that’s for sure.

I am sorry to say, but PFF lineman grades are horse pooh. 80 grade with 11 sacks prove it, though Tannehill does like to hold the ball. But Quessenberry is a versatile guy who is very long and athletic. I always followed his career because of his fight with cancer. It is a great story of perseverance. Quessenberry is a bit older because of his situation, but his versatility is intriguing. He could be the swing tackle or the 1st interior sub off the bench. He is a hedging your bets kind of player. If there is an injury he can play pretty much anywhere and from all accounts is a great locker room guy. He played a lot of left tackle for the Titans when Lewan was hurt. I would teach him to snap so he could sub at center as well. If he is great at run blocking, but struggles in pass pro, playing in the interior where you get help could certainly hide those deficiencies. Nice signing.

Somebody was talking about those two rookie corners they drafted that year after Norman left. Bradberry, Worley and Sanchez. Bradberry and Worley were starting corners right off the bat. I think Joe B.'s entire article is just semantics and a smokescreen. They said the same thing about Josh and he was starting week 2. Tre started right away. Ed Oliver started right away (I get that the DL rotates). Devin Singletary and Dawson Knox started right away. Dion Dawkins started after a couple of games. Zay Jones started right away. Taron Johnson was the nickel right away. Tremaine Edmunds started right away at 20 years old. Joe B. is wrong here. It is a case by case basis. Yeah maybe they sign a vet at some point, but it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense in my mind to go anywhere but corner in the first. It's a need and there are some really good ones. If the good ones are gone, then you pivot. Don't force it.

Nah I mean, if it's truly how he feels, I trust him obviously. I just think it is smokescreen stuff. I like a few of the corners in the draft. Stingley and McDuffie are my favorites. But I think there are basically 4 guys you could take in the first, with maybe Booth and McDuffie around at our pick.Outside of that you start getting to a place where maybe guys aren't better than Jackson. So I would want an actual real upgrade. First round corner becomes an immediate starter. Any other position is a backup, so unless those top 4 guys are gone, we are drafting a corner in the first imo.

Yeah I don't believe him. He's going to say that, but Jackson is a depth player. I do like Jackson. But you can't go into a season with Jackson and an injured White. Jackson is more of a 3-4 guy to me. He said the same stuff about Levi Wallace, tried to replace him for 4 years, and then let him walk. And Wallace was a liability against teams with speed.

This is true, except in 2015, which was Carolina's Super Bowl year. They had Prime Josh Norman and Peanut Tillman. And they were dominate and went 15-1. Yeah they lost the Super Bowl, but Tillman tore his ACL near the end of the season. Maybe if he stays healthy, they win the thing. If we want to win a Super Bowl we can't get away with the Levi Wallaces and Dane Jacksons of the world.

You mean Dion, the guard? And all of his three plays at guard his rookie year where he looked so amazing?

Yeah I don’t think he has amazing traits. His appeal is that he is plug and play. Not much of a learning curve or adjustment. These long, athletic, fast small school dudes who only know how to play man sometimes take awhile.

Yeah there are definitely similarities in their game. Some scouting people like him more. Smith plays with way more power and plays downhill. He is not nearly as raw as Maine was coming out. I have no problem with the process by which they identified Edmunds as the type of backer they want. They wanted a fast, long powerful backer with crazy upside. Hasn’t quite worked out with Maine 100%, and I like him a lot. Just not sure you pay him. Taking Smith pushes the reset button on the position, gets a very similar prospect with what I think is a higher upside on a rookie contract. I like Troy Andersen. I know people like Andersen, but he is very raw imo. I like Leo Chenal a lot but he doesn’t have that length they seem to want. But Smith is the closest thing to type of linebacker they seem to want, and he was coached the last three years by McDermott guy Brent Pry. They met with him at the combine, were at his pro day, and now working him out. It makes sense to me.
