It's an entirely different proposition for McVay, who designs extraordinary plays and has a top 5 offense with skill players all over and a solid QB versus Marrone who is not an offensive genius with a rookie 6th round QB and questionable skill players.
Mariota is terrible. He rarely steps into his throws. Even on his two best passes, right on the money, he had no rush at all, and open receivers, and still threw them both all arm with terrible technique.
You have lived long enough and have been around this board enough to know what that means. It's around the 90% range the last several games. Name the last catch he made that he caught cleanly turned up field and gained any kind of yardage. Name the last tackle he broke after he made a catch.
The Jets weren't bottom of the league until we made them bottom of the league. They were middle of the pack and rated higher than the Bills. They had Darnold and we shut him down. They had Williams. They had Mosley for more than half the game and we moved the ball against them up and down the field when he was in there, too. That's a false narrative that they are two of the worst teams. Only one, the Giants were.
I never fell for that story. What if they didn't do what he imagined they would do. He probably just needed a TE badly, didn't we always, and thought either one of them would be better than we had.
You cannot count on him right now, obviously. It has little to do with talent. That is why the Colts signed Hoyer, who is a solid backup, and cut Kelly. He will go on theirs or someone else's PS.
If a team wants to sign him they make a contract offer to his agent. The agent informs the player and usually the team he is on the PS of. That team can then make any contract offer they want to him, to match, for more or for less. The player and agent then decide which one they will sign.
The PS team he’s on obviously knows he must be on 53 and they must release another player to sign him so that is always a big factor.
I think it's clear that he has the arm and the pure talent. He probably did just as many dumb things as Uncle Jim. But Jimbo learned and changed before it was too late. Jury is still out on Chadwick.
