Yep. And it was thorough. McD called Beane on his cell, Beane answered, "Hey, Sean, what up, dawg?" and Sean said, "Welcome to the Buffalo Bills, bud."

To me, even though it seems strange if not impossible, the better Peterman is, the more likely Cardale makes the team. Yates is a given and a limited, barely reliable veteran backup. Coaches, as you say, love these kinds of guys as failsafe. I expect Peterman, even though I think he is very limited at this point, to be very good in camp and likely preseason. If the coaches think he could actually come in and play a half or a game in their offense AND Cardale makes a huge leap and shows them a ton as a different kind of player but potential long term starter in a couple years, then and only then do they cut Yates and keep the two young guys. I see little chance of Cardale looking great, Peterman looking fair and them cutting Yates. So the better Peterman looks the better chance that Jones stays. That's not a prediction. If I had to bet, they cut Jones (a mistake unless he doesnt show much) and keep Yates and Peterman. -
I will be very surprised if it is anyone other than Beane and the wide search is just window dressing.

GM Doug Whaley has been fired
Kelly the Dog replied to Roundybout's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yep. If Sammy is healthy, I'm excited about Taylor in this offense. He's not going to be great, but I see a kind of Jake Plummer season, when Plummer was good or at least was a field general of a winning team. Like Denver 2005. TT already has better stats than Plummer, and I know Plummer sucked at different times in his career, I just mean ton of play action and roll outs and hitting open guys downfield combined with strong run game in a very efficient offense. -

I agree with all of that. That's why it makes zero sense that Pegula fired Whaley for not taking Mahomes. I think Whaley wasn't behind TT and McD was. Pegula became enamored with McD's discipline anti-Rex attitude and gave him control. That's why Whaley is gone. Not because he didn't want Mahomes. Clearly McD ran draft after Whaley set his board. -
RD 5, Pick 171: Nathan Peterman (QB) - Pitt

There is little groupthink in NFL draft. Opinions are all over the board all the time every year. So many people voice their opinions so you can get a consensus idea that a player is a or b or will be drafted at a certain time. But it's not a groupthink. It's like an aggregate. -
GM Doug Whaley has been fired

That doesn't make sense though. In order for that to be true, Whaley had to be the one totally in charge of the draft and making the decision on the trade, against the wishes of the coach and owner. It makes no sense to want a guy, let your football guy run the draft because he knows these players better than you, then fire the guy for not doing what you wanted. -

Can someone explain to me why, if what everyone everywhere seems to be saying, that he has all of these essential QB skills, the guy fell in the draft, and wasn't a first round pick? Everyone says he has great accuracy, leadership, anticipation, mobility, size, etc. There is only one answer to that. Popgun arm. -

The deep out is the hardest throw. Not the out. -

Might as well say it now, Bills are due in 2022!!! -

That's reasonably encouraging. Although the only one there I put any stock in is Mayock, and just saying he can throw out routes means it's really not strong enough for deep outs and long balls, which is the real decider. If it's strong enough for out routes he's very limited. "Can still throw the ball downfield" means nothing. On clips you can see him do that. Kiper does nothing. Matt Miller usually knows what he is talking about, or often enough. -
Depth chart & outstanding needs
Kelly the Dog replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I also think we need a veteran coverage LB desperately. A backup safety with range and experience. Another TE. Another decent backup LB. And a backup edge rusher. A few of those should be easy to fill with cuts. We need to spend the money saved by letting Gillislee go on a solid LB, in the Zach Brown or Lorax pickup. -
Actually they have numerous similar traits.

GMs virtually never change schemes. Only coaches do. Sometimes a GM looking for a coach will know the strength of his team leans toward a certain kind of scheme which could affect his search to some degree. But that doesn't really matter at all. If Mickey Rat is here more than three years it will be because he wins. Yes he will run his scheme and draft to that scheme, but Whaley was drafting to his HC's scheme all this time, too. -
A long tenure of old timers with a history of misjudging on contracts/personnel. That was the culture of the Bills for 20 years.

If I had to bet, this is what I see, too. It depends on how much Cardale has grown in a year and if he wows them with his potential. I imagine that Peterman will outplay him in camp and maybe preseason. If Cardale looks a lot better then maybe they think they can get away without Yates. -
Mickey Rat.

The guy is already here. Mickey Rat. The new GM will be a talent evaluator and not a roster maker. -
Grade the 2017 Buffalo Bills draft
Kelly the Dog replied to Real McClappy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They weren't. At all. Good GMs and teams think short, mid and long term simultaneously. They are thinking long term with Mahomes. Sit him like Aaron Rodgers sit him. -
Yep. The Falcons put it all together this year. The Dolphins are not built to last and I doubt they are on an ascendency but it remains to be seen.

Funny you say that but for me, Cousins just barely has enough. The reason I don't think he can be elite is because he can't get the ball there quick or hard enough on some throws. I understand that it's believed he has enough. But that's kind of my point with Peterman. If you don't even have Kirk Cousins strength, which is thought to be strong enough, you can't succeed at a top level. That's my worry. And that's why he's thought of as a career backup.
