Knowing what you know today about Kelly and Brady
Kelly the Dog replied to mead107's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is some truth to that. Brady never would have taken the beating that Kelly did. Especially the first couple years. -
Aaron Williams visiting the Jags today

i surely would not mind that. -
Forget Gregory. We all but know that this is a formality, McD is going to run the show, Brandon will handle the cap and be, here it comes, a Beane counter.

Hope he's no Phil Michelson, his price tag could go substantially up. -
GM Doug Whaley has been fired

I never understood that idea. There is no question a team that drafts well has a good chance to always be competitive. But it doesn't matter one bit whether your team has high draft picks, low draft picks, UDFA, street FA, trades, or big name free agent signings. Granted, continuity is much, much better and you don't want new guys every year, but it doesn't matter where you get them, you need to get good ones and coach them well and keep the best ones and make good cap decisions. -

Q: You’ve been a coordinator and called plays. As a head coach, what is your plan going forward in terms of calling defenses and still taking all the responsibility of a head coach? SM: That’s a great question. I‘m going to be involved in all three phases of this football team, offense, defense and special teams. When you’re a defensive coordinator, you spend a heck of a lot of time looking at the offensive side of the ball so I feel comfortable in my background of the offensive side of the ball and then my special teams background being around John Harbaugh for years in Philadelphia, Dave Toub, some of the great special teams coaches over the years, Bruce DeHaven. And so I’m going to be involved aggressively in all three phases. Defensively, whether or not I’ll call the plays, we haven’t decided on anything like that yet just from a management standpoint. That will come at the right time. See above. -

When you are a vested veteran you do not have to clear waivers, you can just sign with any team I think. -

Did you watch McDermott's press conference? Of course it is Dennison's offense. That is self-evident. -
Bills Decline 5th Year Option on Sammy Watkins
Kelly the Dog replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I mean the distinction is very clear. We lose a year of him guaranteed playing for us. It's muddy as to what is going to transpire. I think he's going to be great, and we will eventually sign him to a monster deal. That's the prediction and my want. I think the move yesterday slightly lessened those chances, and surely lessened the chances that we have him for sure the next two years. -

He has control over the roster, he controlled the entire draft, he is helping choose the GM, he is the face of the franchise to the media, and is the one voice, which he preaches himself, he has said himself he is going to involve himself deeply in all three phases of the game, and the rumor is he wants to be the guy that runs onto the field and grabs the tee after kickoffs. But he is not in control. -

I know a lot. I'm not angry at all. I like McDermott. He said himself he is going to involve himself in the offense a lot. The first day on the job he said it in his press conference. You, sir, with no apologies to DC Tom, are an idiot. -

Not what I was talking about obviously. He doesnt have to sign his tag. Can hold out. And chances are McD would not want a guy that did not want to be here. I don't predict it but it has happened and while I don't think Sammy is a dick or prima donna who knows what he is thinking now about his future on the team. He may want out and he could force it under the tag, he couldn't under the option. -

Yep. There are entire games he virtually never gets touched. Granted, a lot of it is him. He's smart, quick release, throws ton of quick hitters, great at moving in pocket. But he gets ridiculous protection every single game and season. It's also not that crazy to think that the greatest QBs of all time get help from their coach and others. Joe Montana and Steve Young are two of the very best ever and who knows what they would have done without Bill Walsh and Jerry Rice. Young got killed his first couple years. -

I'm not talking about a constant pass rush every play, I mean what virtually every QB faces on every team except the Patriots (and Dak Prescott last year). There is no question IMO he has had better protection than any QB in the last 25 years. And it's half him and half Bellichick IMO. -

Clearly Brady has had a far better career. But I have always contended that if Brady wasn't on the Patriots, and didn't have Bellidick's mastery finding guys that he could plus in and protect Marcia, and if Brady played on virtually any other team and had to face a constant rush in his face, he wouldn't have turned out nearly as good. And yes, I know how smart he is and how fast he can get the ball out and how he can move in the pocket. I also know he cant deal with a strong rush. -
I have always been a huge fan of Shady's nuance and subtlety.

Gary Barnidge visited the Bills May 3rd
Kelly the Dog replied to CNY315's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That dude gets on the phone and calls up agents. 12 seems ridiculous as far as visits go but I wouldn't doubt that 12 teams called his agent to see if there was interest. He's just a solid vet that as a two TE or backup would be a nice player. -

DraftDiamonds who comes here said he had 12 visits lined up. That seems kind of strange. I do think if he leaves without signing it may be tough to wrap him up. He will be in demand. He may want to play for a guaranteed winner at 31 though. -

Yep. McD is just going to say, "We are are team here, no ego, we don't have a leader, so do what I say." -
The point is he had been in the NFL awhile, then got two different head coaching jobs in the NFL, then had a 10 year dominant college HC career with dozens of guys that went to the NFL, then was a NFL HC again. McD has never been a high school HC. It's a pet peeve of mine, but this is (almost) the equivalent of Tom Brady was a sixth round choice! Why can't Peterman do it?! Well, he can, but there have been dozens and dozens of fifth and sixth and seventh round picks that have sucked, and one that did it who is one of the best all-time. Yep, and far more importantly, every minute he spends on the personnel side is one minute less he spends on the thing that got him this job, coaching. Not to mention that an NFL HC job has no apprenticeship. There is nothing you can do that can prepare you for it. It's like President of the country. There are all kinds of requirements of your time and energy that you never had to do before. It's just a lot of stuff. Yes, it's possible he can do it. I like him. I'm not sure he knows what he is getting into.
