Zay Jones drops huge catch. <radio edit>
Kelly the Dog replied to r00tabaga's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He clearly stumbles himself. He didn't need to. It wasn't because of the ball he tracked. If he just keeps his balance he probably makes the catch and walks into the endzone. -
Overall well. McD made the decision to deactivate Tate and replace him on PR with Clay to play against his old team and add speed to the WR corp. then didn't use him on offense and he fumbled a punt that could have been disastrous.
-
Of course, but you can only play the hand you are dealt. He was playing a one score game the whole game. That influences decisions a great deal. He should have more confidence in his defense than his offense. The second half was not much different than the first. We gave up yards but not points. They couldn't run. He knew one big play could steal the game. As soon as it gets more than one score that thought goes away.

Why did the bills draft Peterman?
Kelly the Dog replied to Steptide's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I get that. He's an unknown. But there are 25 things a solid starter in the NFL needs to do and he showed about 5 of them. The things he couldn't do that made him a 5th round pick he never showed. Ever. He's Trent Edwards so far. He did one thing great and people got all bent out of shape because he could make a quick, great decision and make an accurate short throw for a completion. That's what Edwards did. But he didn't do anything else. When the rush came he was awful. But fans here gave him credit for things he never did, which is happening again. -

I'm not going to deny any of those flat out but I will watch the all 22 and see what happened on those plays. I will say that last week when people were complaining about that kind of stuff, when I watched the all 22 and specifically looked for those things, Most of it was just untrue. TT would look at a guy, he's covered, then look to another guy, and THEN the first guy gets open. Or a play is a three step drop and clearly to one player which is thrown immediately and then someone says there was a guy wide open in the middle or on the other side of the field which is not in any way a QB's fault or negligence or "missing open WR" in any definition. It will be interesting to see. -

And you know for sure Zay was supposed to run to the sidelines on that call? How? -

You can't say it was a corner route. There was nothing, not even Zay turning the way he did makes anyone think it was a corner route. If it were a corner route he wouldn't have stopped the way he did. -
OR we hit the wide open play at the end of the game.

Most people don't know this, and I really don't know why, but did you know that Tom Brady was a sixth round pick? Why don't we pick more quarterbacks in the sixth round like the good teams? -

Name all the throws that TT missed. If you can't name any perhaps there were other circumstances. -

Name all the throws TT missed and all the open WR he missed. -
Coaches think different than fans. Coaches don't give a crap about stats. McD played a very conservative game against a team he knew, on the road, in his second game ever, and if either Zay runs the right route or Tyrod makes a better pass (whichever was the culprit) we steal a game we weren't doing much in. I can't blame him for that. To me, the last throw was like the Scott Norwood kick. We lost the game because we missed it. But it you run that exact same play ten times, Norwood makes the kick 7-8 out of 10 times, and we score and win this game 7-8 out of 10. It was a wide open play.

I don't think people are giving the Panthers enough credit for having a good offense. Name the teams that have two good RB, a top TE, a clear #1 WR with talent AND a franchise QB. Not many. They are not the best but they have a ton of weapons. One of the most surprising things of the whole game for me was how good Jonathan Stewart still is. He got next to nothing on the stat sheet but got twice as many yards as he should have. He's still very good.

Goff was terrible today. The whole game. Anyone who watched I think would say that. -

IMO people that hate Tyrod will just say it was a terrible pass. People that like Tyrod or are objective will see what you did. I saw what you did. I think Tyrod threw it exactly where he wanted to. He had a clear look and all the time and he makes that pass. It's one of the only things he does. -
If Zay ran the wrong route and was supposed to look in and not out then Taylor did not overthrow it. That is what a lot of people think. Just as many think otherwise. We may never know. But I think it will come out he was expected to just run a post and not out. He's a rookie. I'm not saying he blew the game. But it could easily have been a perfect pass. I don't know either way right now and I don't think anyone here does.

I hate Tyrod so much as a QB

Tell me what plays he made downfield. Show me what plays he made that showed real arm strength. Show me what plays he made when he was under fire on a rush outside of once or twice when he immediately ran up the middle when the rush came. Show me his touchdown passes. Show me more than one completion over 20 yards in the air. Show me one play where he went to his third progresssion. Show one game he put up points. He had like 70 rating. Crappy completion percentage. Literally one touchdown (on a fabulous pass I will admit). People here give him credit for things he never did. What he did was one thing great. Make a quick decision and get a quick pass off accurately short. That is what he did and he did it great and it is an important element. He did little else. -
The biggest fear I had going into this game was that McCaffrey was going to kill them on swing passes and in the flat because the LBs just couldn't keep up with him. That never really happened. Alexander was very good. Brown and Humber overall were fine. We missed a few assignments on short passes over the middle in the first half but it didn't kill us. Most of those plays were on the DBs. The linebackers have played surprisingly well in both games.
-
That's exactly the reason I think Zay blew the route rather than Tyrod blew the throw. It was an easy throw. The one thing he does well.

He did nothing nothing nothing whatsoever in the preseason to counter the knocks on him. Not one thing. Not one time. You realize that he had one TD, a crappy rating, a crappy completion percentage, and zero downfield, right? He wasn't even any good. He didn't read defenses or go through more than his second progression. He didn't handle rushes well. He threw eight to ten yard passes very fast very accurate very well. Thats a good thing. But that's also it. -
Maybe. I was shocked that the Panthers went away from it in the second half. They had it whenever they wanted.
-
Exactly. Combined with little time to throw. Combined with conservative playcalling.

You don't think that was by design? You think Dennison and McD were telling him to go downfield more and he was either defying them or hesitant to pull the trigger? If you do you're nuts. -

If the so called experts called him a second round pick, and he is a solid citizen, the fact that the GMs thought he was a fifth round pick should alarm you not excite you. He was a 5th rounder because he has a rag arm and does everything else well but nothing great. It's pretty easy to see. Because that's exactly who he was in preseason
