President cancels Eagles trip to White House
Kelly the Dog replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I just read because plans were already made for the trip, instead of visiting the White House, the Eagles are now going to visit DCTom's House, where they are sure to get a much more cordial, pleasant welcome. -

I wouldn't do that if I were you. You'll ruin any chance of getting another date with Boyst. -
Some owners are good at that and some are not. Lurie is pretty good at it and Terry is rather bad. That has nothing to do with the quality of ownership, or the right or wrong way to do that kind of thing. I'm thrilled with the Pegulas being the owners of the Sabres and Bills. I cringe when I see Terry speak in public about his teams or decisions. I don't like speaking in public either and suck at it. I imagine he hates it too.

Very true. But then again this is a message board for amateurs about a professional football team. That’s the reason for its existence. No one here believes one needs to be a football player or coach to lambaste a player for his play or stupidity on the field. Your original point IMO is true to me, but I’m not sure it needs to be true for everyone here. Fans can be happy some professional was released so a different professional they think could be better may take his place. Or even addition by subtraction. A lot of people here were thrilled that we just got rid of Dareus for virtually nothing last year.

Tre'Davious White on NFL Network

I remember before the season started McD said something to the affect of you just say something to him once and he doesn’t make the same mistake twice. Now I’m sure that’s not 100% true but it’s very believable he said stay down because he remembered the previous week. -
He didn't get fired he took the buyout. He said he took the buyout because they took away his column. Said he wasn't being an effective writer anymore. Any time, as John C says, in the 29 years they could have taken away the column and he likely would have had the same reaction: I am not going to work here if I do not have the opportunity to write the column. So he was fired.

I understood what you said. But how can you say the systemic failure influence his writing if his writing was the same before the systemic failure? I also said that I don't recall either way whether he was negative in the beginning. I was going off a specific memory of a poster whose memory and anecdote seemed to say he was always like that. So I said IF he was always like that, the crappiness of the team can't be a reason.

Of course. But that is avoiding the discussion and seminal point of this specific debate. By saying, in a discussion of Jerry's negativism, that during the majority of Jerry's tenure the Bills and Sabres were poor teams and poorly run orgs, you are implying that those two facts were a large portion of the reason for his negativism. But if he was negative from the get-go, while the teams were not poor and not poorly run, that negates the poorness in your reasoning.

I was not a big fan of Sully personally. But the idea that he was this bitter curmudgeon is probably far from true. I know a bunch of writers in Buffalo to varying degrees and they all like him. They all say he's a funny guy and fun to drink with. Almost every younger writer at the News said he was very helpful as a mentor. IMO, he just developed this persona for himself over many years, it worked for quite some time whether people loved or hated him, and then it stopped working and he wasn't able to change, adapt or write himself out of it.

Not sure that is true. He's getting up there in age. Think of him as an NFL veteran getting released at age 35. Some teams may sign him but not what he would have made ten years ago. Sure, your writing skills often don't diminish with age, but there is a large element of ageism in most corporate entities. If he was released ten years, or twenty years ago, his worth to other papers would be much higher.

Man, that's like the Joe Theisman pic.
