I now understand why the Bills passed on DK Metcalf

#87 in the NFL Rule Book: Stay away from diva WR and you end up with the Bills 2018 WR corps. Not that I thought they should draft DK high. -
Buffalo Bills Confirmed UDFA Signing. (2 Left)

5,240 people are talking about this Yep, thanks for that. Although the numbers remain the same, hundreds for every 32 (plus compensatory) in each round. The other factor that hasn't been mentioned yet is they are super cheap. So a veteran making decent money who was a draft pick from any round that is in his 5th+ year and isn't a star or good player will often be replaced by an UDFA who has some potential and is dirt cheap for three years. -
RD 3, Pick 96: TE Dawson Knox, Ole Miss
Kelly the Dog replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Impossible to know, but chances are he would have been a much higher pick if he had been on Iowa, and gotten 5x the chances, and Noah Fant would have been a much lower pick if he had been on Ole Miss. -

That is an interesting stat. I have always felt that 6th and 7th rounders were the equivalent in talent and potential as hundreds of UDFA. It should be noted, however, that there are maybe 300 UDFA each year and only 32-40 in the rounds 3-7. -
RD 3, Pick 74: RB Devin Singletary, Florida Atlantic

And he has a great 20 yard time, which is far more important than 40 for a RB. -

Not to mention that I think he has had one fumble every 190 carries, so he doesn't have problems with his hands. There is no way he cannot catch short passes out of the backfield. -

His shiftiness and insanely quick feet, out in the flat or just on swing passes, in order to make one guy miss, seems a no brainer. -

Because forget stats. He got balls thrown to him because there was no one else besides Foster. He doesn't run great routes, he often bobbles it when he catches it, he drops more than his share, he rarely gets YAC, he rarely knows where he is on the field with regards to the first down marker, he never breaks tackles, he is often lost near the sideline, he doesn't track the ball in the air well, he doesn't fight for the ball or win 50-50 battles, he doesn't jump for the ball well (he does gown down to the ground all the time though), he doesn't get deep well despite good speed, and rarely makes clutch plays. A lot of those stats, as posters have documented, were in garbage time. Other than that, he is the complete WR. -

Thanks for that. Stats are often worthless without context and that makes sense. -
While I believe all of that to be true, I think he was primarily an OG at Oklahoma, excelled at it, and last year they needed him to move to RT and he did it and excelled there, too. But I believe he has played a lot more as a guard and one year as a tackle. We do want him to play tackle though, at least at first.

I like the potential of both of them. I hope one stays and the other is on the PS. I see little need for Zay. -

He usually exudes unbridled enthusiasm. He looked to me like he was coached by his agent or Bills brass to tone it down a notch, and just say I am here to compete. I actually liked his answers a lot. -

I'm not making any accusations, but let's just say that J often may have looked like he just got punched in the face with a powdered doughnut. -

Yep. Although people have been saying that five years running. His tape from last year is pretty surprising. He still runs extremely hard and doesn't look his age at all. Plus we need a short yardage back. I'm not sure you can count on Singletary doing that as a rookie but hard to tell. His tape is incredible. -

Oh I know, and I was just joking that some Bills don't even catch with their hands. Agree on Knox and that he catches with his hands out, maybe he can teach Zay a few things. -

Yep. Agree with all of that. Yeldon, IMO, signed a two year deal because Shady and Gore are gone next year. I see them using him only as a third down back and mostly as a pass catcher out of the backfield, and Gore will take a chunk of those third down plays because he is a fierce pass blocker. It's both hard to imagine how they activate Singletary and equally hard they imagine not having him as a third round pick, but I'm sure he was thought of as the guy next year, too, to some degree. It's also possible they get rid of the fullback and let Gore get those few plays (Badol suggested perhaps even Dawson could do some of that if we wanted to scrap the fullback). I like that idea and get Gore in there and the defense doesn't know if he or Shady/Singletary would get the ball. And yes, Yeldon cannot at all do what McKenzie can do, other than run the underneath routes, the sweeps were really the unique value McKenzie added. I want that in the arsenal. -

I think he can do what you described, I have seen a lot of coaches throw passes. That is different than "taking reps." I'm not sure if there is an actual rule against that but I have not seen it. -

Yep. I for one have completely given up on the Boroquez and other Bills WR's method of trying to catch with the back of your hands like a sea lion. -

I think it depends on how well Duke Williams plays. If he is going to make the 53 there is a lot less chance that Sills does. McKenzie made some plays last year and has decent chance to stick, but his chances took three serious blows with the addition of Beasley, who will start, Roberts, who kills McKenzie's chance of sticking as the PR, and to a smaller extent Yeldon, who is likely going to be used as a pass catcher on underneath routes. Brown, Beasley, Foster and Roberts are locks. That leaves Zay, Williams, McKenzie, Sills and Easley along with 3-4 remaining guys from last year fighting for what is likely two slots. But we do need a big guy that can win jump balls because the team wants a complementary group of receivers and I strongly think we are keeping one of them. Sills will have to beat out Duke for one of those two spots. And Zay, McKenzie and Easley will fight it out for the other, with Zay having a huge advantage although I think he stinks. I like him, too, especially for those reasons you mentioned. But as I said above the addition of Beasley like you said, plus Roberts, plus Yeldon even though they don't play the same position hurts his chances. If it were up to me, because of his quickness and ability of those sweeps which adds a new dimension to the offense, I would take McKenzie over Zay. We just don't need Jones skill set in this group. -

He seemed a little meek by twice saying that he thought he could play in the NFL after he was a freshman and just had to wait two years? -

He might beat out Barkley for the active game day job, too. Barkley had a good game, he is not a good quarterback or backup. -

Jim just said "I did ten times more stupid crap than Chad did, ten times over and you know it." Reich was speechless and said you're right, we'll take him.
