Agree. I know the WR thing is tough for us fans. I too would like more talent. But that being said I am holding out hope that this year OL will be the best in front of Josh Allen in his career. Everyone will be watching Coleman and Samuels in camp (as will I), but I so want to see if VPG can impress enough to get the lion share of starts during the upcoming season. Brown, Torrence, (a surprising VPG), McGovern Dawkins, as starters would be wonderful for me. I want to see what Josh Allen can do when he has time to stand in the pocket more than scramble around buying time. I think he can tear it up with the ball-catchers currently on this team. Is it too early to write to Santa?

With what is left at FA WRs I think Beane goes to camp with what he has. I believe that the competition for the bottom 2-3 WR slots will be heated. If it becomes apparent that there are questions with the remaining 1-2 slots (I'm pretty sure they keep 6) this year, then there should be plenty of WR cuts to choose from at cutdown time.

I don't expect Hyde to sign with another team. He may be healthy enough (medically cleared) to play. I get the feeling if Micah has hung them up, he will be in and out of camp this year with the Bills as a "guest". IF it looks like the Bills could use him, he may consider signing for whatever role they would want him to play. An old Micah Hyde IMO is better than a depth player like Hamlin or Williamson. Hell, I'd consider signing Micah with 500K guaranteed to come to camp just to bring along Bishop and give Mike Edwards the low down of what Bills Safeties need to do.

But it is not the current cap allocated $'s on any year that causes concern. Dawkins did an extension and is coming in cheap this year. McGovern and Edwards are currently fixed, and Brown has not extended yet. Add in the rookie C (who hopefully ends up starting soon) and Beane is putting "resources" in the position. The Bills are reaping some cap benefit this season. But they have to look forward to when Brown signs and McGovern in his last contract year in 2025. Let alone trying to lock up Torrence at the end of 2025 (or 2026). This is what I mean by not looking at a snapshot of the spending, it's way too fluid looking forward.

The 5th year option is not "cheap" if the player is not up to the caliber of the cost. I agree with a lot you said in your post. In Groot's situation, the 5th year option of $13M is not out of line one way or the other very much. Being the Bills are light in talent on the DL next season (after they dump Von), it may work out. Typically, the 5th year option is great for teams when the player is way over-achieving. It gets them one cheaper year from what the average will be on their new extension. Other than that it could also have negative effects on other players, as you stated.

No doubt teams keep an eye on positional spending and rate it to worth of position but it's a fluid situation. SF has a positional cap of less than $5M for QB this season. They also have the highest cap hit for DL in the league with $76M. SF's situation allows them to do that. Allocating cap dollars vs positions is constantly changing on all teams as their situations change. The "Beane counters" on the Bills are not just looking at the cap this year but years down the road. Currently the Bills are #29th in OL spending. That is going to change a lot in the next 2 years.

I think it's realistic to assume that Hollins will be WR4 at best. I can see a scenario where he is beat out in camp and relegated to WR5. In those roles he will be behind the top 3 WRs along with a minimum of Cook and Kincaid and maybe behind Knox. Even as a WR4 he will be probably getting #7 pass catcher targets. 250-300 yards and 2-3 TDs would be fine with me in that role.

Don't forget the LB discussions. Beane and McDermott were toast for not bringing in star FAs and their draft picks were going to bust. Sometimes (no matter what you think) it's best to just wait and see what happens.

FTR, I don't put you or @Kirby Jacksonin THAT category. I'm generally a positive guy but I just posted in another thread how I thought for sure Beane was going to double-dip WR in the draft. He didn't and I question that move. That being said, the draft and Beane's choices are history now so I'm not going to dwell on it. Until camp starts, I'm just going to watch what happens and try to figure out what their reasoning is.

Thanks for your Davis input. I bring that up because I do believe the negative plays he generated is not talked about enough. His occasional big plays are definitely offset by the bad ones and the complete vanishing act in too many games. I'm as interested as anyone about the deep threat "apparent" void. I can't answer that, and I will definitely want to see who is doing that in camp and how they are faring. It will be a challenge for Brady to find a way of splitting Diggs's targets and production among the WRs and TEs. Another question that has to be addressed. I guess my overall opinion is, it's not insurmountable. It definitely is going to put a change of tactics on Josh Allen's shoulders. I'm going to trust him and Brady to figure it out until next season when I see another starting WR brought in. Bottom line for me is I have a hard time being all doom and gloom with Allen as the QB. Josh and Brady having to be on the same page goes without saying.

I find it hard to believe that Brady will not send different WRs deep. Someone will get 9 routes. It's true that Shakir only had 45 targets, but he caught 39 balls. He also hasn't had an interception against him in his 2 years in Buffalo. Gabe had 81 targets but only 45 catches (6 more than Shakir). 6. 6 is also the magic number of interception that Gabe gave up each of the last 2 years for a total of 12. I had high hopes for Gabe Davis, but they did not come true. Overall, Davis did not produce enough and had a lot of drive killing INTs and drops. His production and benefit to the team can easily be made up with another WR on this team.

This is nothing, wait for OTAs and camp. Both sides of this debate will twist themselves into knots championing their causes. Every time I start to think negatively about the team, I remember we have Josh Allen as QB. I'll just sit in the middle and wait for the games to be played.

If they keep 6 WRs the math will work out that 1 will not dress most weeks. That WR could have more WR potential than ST worth. I agree that WR5 needs to be a ST guy.

Hollins is a back-end guy. FWIW Claypoole took over 100 snaps on ST for Miami last season in half a season. Guys like Shorter and Shavers need to work on the ST craft. It's not rocket science.

Beane probably didn't want to sign OBJ, especially for the money he just signed for. Chark I believe was considered but we won't know now. Beane can't do nothing bigger than what he has done until after June 1st.

Samuel Shakir Coleman I'm starting to get some hope that at least one (maybe two) of these other guys can rejuvenate themselves to push the above 3 for playing time. Hamler Hollins Claypoole Cephus Shorter Shavers Isabella Thompson The UDFAs Each one, on their own, has the odds against them. But compared to other years, there is some inherent talent with these guys. The WR camp battles could get interesting. There is also a chance that someone else after June 1st joins the "longshots".
