  1. Not really an excuse, but Miami receivers caught a lot of contested passes, and passes that weren’t that great. The Bills still don’t have big, strong, mean, fast receivers. Duke isn’t fast, but he’s got most of those other characteristics covered. He needs more targets (assuming he’s healthy).
  2. My son’s girlfriend grew up in a Steelers family. At halftime she was taunting us and saying the Bills are as bad as the Steelers this year, maybe even worse since they are losing to the lowly Dolphins. I really like her, and I know she was just teasing, and I know that the NFL is just entertainment, but I found myself getting tense. I was so relieved when the Bills regained the lead and she stopped with the taunting.
  3. Speaking of touch, there was a pass late in the game that he lobbed over a defender to McKenzie and it was accurate, soft, and easily caught. I didn’t think he was capable of a nice throw like that.
  4. On TV the announcers said he threw it toward the press box and they said it fell short “by about 8 rows of seats”
  5. The short yardage slant or square pass play in the middle of the field is the favorite play in the NFL these days. It can be a wideout or a tight end. Fitz was killing the Bills with those. Brady and Welker/Edelman have won super bowls with that as their favorite play. Why don’t the Bills run that type of play very often?
  6. If you want to shorten the game, I would think about fewer clock stoppages for incomplete passes or players going out of bounds. Maybe only stop the clock for those things after a two minute warning. It’s not as if the refs have to go fetch the ball when it goes outside the playing field. They have plenty of balls that they can swap in while the other ball is being retrieved.
  7. An aspect of completion percentage that may make the results a little biased is the inclusion of throw away passes. If the receivers aren’t open or the QB is under pressure, then throwing it away is often the smart decision. Josh is learning to throw it away, but he still tries to run for it or force it in too often. Today there was a screen play that the Dolphins had covered. A veteran QB would throw the ball at the feet of the intended receiver. Josh ran for it for no gain. By running, that play doesn’t add to his incompletion percentage, but maybe he should have thrown it into the ground and lived with the incomplete pass. Less chance for injury, and less energy expended. The flip side is that he might have been able to make yardage by running, but in this case there were many Dolphins in the area. It was unlikely that he would make yardage, and he might have gotten himself hurt.
  8. The TV broadcast of the game was TERRIBLE. They love to fill the screen with somebody’s face, and they don’t return to the full lineup view until the ball is snapped. I don’t need to see a player be mad or happy about a play. I don’t need to see a coach stare at his play sheet. Show me the team on the field. I want to see the formation, the substitutions, the shifts and motions, etc.
  9. I went over to my son’s place and he grilled steaks while we watched the game. Our fandom is multiplied when we do that. It adds power to the force that ultimately reaches the Bills and gives them an extra boost.
  10. It must be tough to throw the deep ball during a game with the adrenaline going. In practice he can relax and throw with the right amount of strength behind it.
  11. I take it as a learning experience for Knox. He turned around before securing the ball. I hope he doesn’t do that again anytime soon.

  16. That would be me. Whenever I have a preference for any result in any facet of my life, I immediately assume that things will not turn out the way I want. It doesn’t matter if it’s something important or something trivial. Drives my wife crazy. But I don’t act that way in public, it’s generally only when I’m talking to my wife.
  17. For over 20 years I commuted about 50 miles one way to work. I quickly learned that there are many horrible drivers out there, and just let it go. About two minutes after being cut off I would be over it. It’s just not worth the aggravation. I also have a “let he who is without sin cast the first stone” mentality. While I consider myself to be a pretty good driver, I have made my share of boneheaded moves over the years.
  18. I realize Moore is not Mahomes, but they have to let him pass the ball more than just on third and long.
  19. Psst. Hey Flacco. The trend in the NFL is the quick pass. Don’t hold on to the ball and wait to get sacked.
  20. Fake punt/pass. A right handed passer does not run to his left. Stupid play design.
