  1. I went out to lunch with an older colleague a few years ago. Some young women walked by, and he said, “I know I’m supposed to look, but I don’t remember why.”
  2. I definitely prefer Hot for Teacher pictures over Prostitution Style pictures
  3. I hope it’s just grandstanding. I’ve had cable, phone and internet with about four generations of this company. Nothing is perfect but my service in suburbia has been acceptable. Who will replace them? The new company will inherit the infrastructure. In order to expand service to remote places and still make a profit, other parts of the business will suffer. The cure is worse than the disease.
  4. If you’re about to get tackled, get low. Don’t stand up straight.
  5. I agree. I make it up to Lake Placid occasionally. Old Forge is only about an hour away, so going up there for kayaking is easy. I used to climb Blue Mountain, Wakely Mountain, and a few others as a day trip. Not quite High Peaks, but tough enough as far as I’m concerned. I haven’t done that kind of hiking in several years. Now my wife and I just walk around lakes and ponds mostly. There are a lot people go to Lake George and call it the Adirondacks.
  6. I’m more of an Old Forge, Eagle Bay, Inlet kind of guy.
  7. My mother was four years older than my father. He passed about twelve years before she did.
  8. She’s correct. I’m an empty nester, so I don’t have any excuses. Except laziness.
  9. I should make lists. Sometimes I’ll have some spare time to get something done, and my mind goes blank. So I watch tv or take a walk. I’d be better off if I paint the railing, vacuum the car, etc.
  10. Peterman, give us some wisdom since you have the most experience out of all of us.
  11. Not saying it’s a favorite, but no list of ‘90s song would be complete without it. Besides, she was a cutie back then.
  12. I use Planet Fitness. They occasionally run a special deal: pay $99 up front and you’re good for a year. If you’re over 60, it’s always that price, no waiting for special deals. At least that’s the way it was a year ago when I renewed my membership. I mostly do cardio: treadmill, elliptical, bike. It’s only about a mile from my house. Since the weather alternates between too hot and too cold, it’s not a bad option.
  13. I’ve had panic attacks occasionally for decades. Like once a month or less. I’m not sure if that is similar to SAD. I know in my head that there is nothing wrong, but I get hot, nervous, breathe fast, knees weak, tunnel vision, stomach gassy. They usually pass after a few minutes, and I have learned to wait them out. When it first started happening I was nervous that there was something wrong medically. Perhaps it’s related to hunger, thirst, too much coffee, or something like that, but I haven’t figured out a pattern. In my case, I think that worrying about them is worse than just relaxing and waiting for them to pass.
  14. Where are they when they don’t answer your calls? It’s frustrating to get my son on the phone. Texting is fine, but talking is an imposition. He might be out somewhere, he might have friends over, he might be someplace noisy, he might be somewhere with no privacy, etc. If I want to talk to him, I usually text him and ask him to call me as soon as it’s convenient for him. That drives my wife crazy, but it works and it doesn’t get him upset or flustered.
  15. My wife can say the same thing, except it was 1963. And we’ve been living about a mile away from them for the past 30+ years. I’ve lived in about six places for at least a year, plus a few shorter term rentals, plus college. I’ve driven past most of them at least once, but I’ve never been back inside any of them.
  16. I’d be more impressed if she didn’t have breast implants and is a 34D. They always say you think you could hang out with a much younger group and still fit in, until you try it.
  17. Very sorry to hear about your cat. I think cats are great. My family had cats when I was growing up. I still remember how heart broken I was when I was in my twenties and was living in another city, and my mother wrote me a letter to tell me the cat that we had since I was in junior high was gone.
  18. Not anymore! The girl’s story is on the morning talk shows today. She says she believes McCoy was involved in setting her up.
  19. My wife buys two-disk external RAIDs all set up for her as a standard catalog item (Newegg, I think). If she doesn’t want to take it with her or have it hooked up, she will backup her stuff in the evening. She also uses cloud storage. A belt-and-suspenders mentality. She had a bad experience once and now she will only trust RAIDs.
  20. Don’t forget, he brought the whole thing to a crescendo when he said “get the SOBs off the field.” The response from Kaep’s mom was, “did he just call me a b——?” The next week was the biggest week of protests as a sign of solidarity. If people would just shut up about it, it will fade away. However, the NFL is losing an opportunity to encourage help and healing for a situation that most people believe to be a genuine societal inequity.
  21. Last year it didn’t start until August. No indication on the website as to whether it will be on again this year.
  22. To me, the hardest part about putting our dog down was going to bed the night before. I knew it was our last night. For the last couple years of her life we let her sleep in our bed since she seemed so weak and lonely. She was 15 when she died. The only reason I could sleep at all was because I knew it was time. She was so skinny and weak. She was almost definitely in pain. Liver cancer, heart failure, kidney failure, gall bladder failure... it was time.
  23. Often it is obvious that the service person is constrained by things they can’t control. I am respectful of this. I’m sure a service person has great stories of jerks on the phone. There must be a point at which the service worker just says “have a nice day” and hangs up.
  24. I have had good experiences recently with Delta Airlines customer service. Insurance is notoriously bad. TV cable/internet is the worst. My wife yells at the people on the other end. I’m sure that helps... not. My son’s girlfriend is amazingly patient, but I’m not sure if her results are any better.
