That’s a big what if.  You’re just setting yourself with to be disappointed.  It is a big deal because DE is a HUGE need for this team and they are gambling huge with this move.  Hopefully he stays healthy but I’m not counting on it.

I think they should use him as a pass rushing specialist.. Put someone else in on obvious running situations, put Bosa in there when we need to get after the QB.

He’s had more seasons with less than 10 sacks than with more.  That’s quite the hot take

I understand that, but what if he goes ballistic? It’s a risk/reward type of scenario and it’s not like he’s Shawne Merriman type of washed. He’s only 29. Keep him fresh, rotate him in and out.. Could be a 10+ sack per year kind of guy.. Who cares about $12.5M? We paid Josh Palmer that..

Do you really think a rookie CB will be better than what we got from Douglas last year?  Remember how Elam worked out?  We need to draft a CB early, but we need a vet to carry the load next year while the draftee learns the system and the speed of the NFL.

Earlier I suggested Gilmore or Slay for that starter/mentor role.

I’m sure we’ll add a few vets but I’m not sure we’ll pay anyone big money, if we do I think that it would be ill advised. If they pant to pay Benford, great, but I think we should add a Dane Jackson or Rasul Douglas type of player to compete with Kaiir Elam.

I'm very happy with the extensions, but without Cook and Benford being re-signed the process remains incomplete.

As to the FAs, I like the Palmer signing and am Ok with Hoecht, but we haven't really filled our most critical needs.  A starter at CB is a necessity through free agency or trade and we need a Groot level or better pass rusher to play opposite of Groot.  While I expect both areas to be addressed in the draft for the future, we lost in the playoffs because of the poor pass rush and mediocre coverage.

If they truly want to pay a CB big money they might as well just pay Benford and draft another.

  6. Beane and McD have made some great moves in the past, but sometimes I feel like your average fan could do a better job. I’m not excited by Hoecht or Palmer but I’ll have to patiently wait and see..

I will end with a gratitude statement however. Extending Josh Allen, Greg Rousseau and Terrell Bernard were excellent moves and should be regarded as such.

    Hopefully McD/Beane finish out strong.

If he is such an elite separator that has great hands and can get down the field……why such mediocre numbers? The way people are describing him in this thread, he had to have been the most under-utilized player in the league.

I am very underwhelmed so far… I love the Allen and Rousseau extensions but I have a real bad feeling about Hoecht and Palmer.. What the eff are we even doing?

Yes.  It'd be a great deal to lock him up at $20m per

I think the franchise tag for CBs is about $20M. I’m kind of on the fence when it comes to Benford. 1.) I think you build through the trenches and 2.) Our defense is a very CB friendly system. I think you let Benford play out this year on his rookie deal and you either extend him or tag him at the end of the year..

I like that proposal, but would he accept?

It’s tough to say. Some players are willing to bet on themselves but others are willing to take less money in case they get injured or have a bad season.

He may never have the chance to make $44M ever again. One ACL tear and he will be making $5M/year on one year deals for the rest of his career.

I’d take the money if it was me.

What would you consider a good offer from the Bills ?

He has one year left on his deal, he is set to make $5M this season. I think Buffalo should add three years onto his existing deal and add $39M in new money. So he would be somewhere in the 4 year $44M (or $11M/year) territory.

He would make less than he would on the open market but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Stefon Diggs bet on himself, how did that work out?

    $44M is life changing money.

It's a deep one. But we're still picking at 30. Even with a trade up, we're still not going to get a "blue chip" type player. Not to say whomever we get can't become one of those. But with what we need to do, or should be doing, with the DL (replacing AJ Epenesa and Daquan Jones on the starting line and needing two more for rotation for both spots) - we shouldn't JUST be relying on the Draft. Especially where we're picking.

I think there should be relatively deep depth at DE/DT throughout RDs 1-2.

My issue is that of the 5 contracts that were coming up (Shakir, Benford, Cook, Rousseau, and Bernard), Bernard was the lowest priority.

With everything we have to do this year, which includes pushing money into later years - putting Bernard as a Middle Linebacker on a large number doesn't seem wise to me. And last year was a big step back for him from the year before and he's shown a penchant for injuries.

However, if the number stays low and allows for us to get out from under it if we need be after 2 years and he looks more like he did in 2023 next season, I'll be okay with it.

Even Ray Lewis struggled without Moose Siragusa in front of him.

Our problem is that we have an undersized DL and it’s allowing our LBs to get eaten up. If Buffalo adds two fat 330-360lbs NTs who can hold their own and eat up blockers, Bernard will start making Pro Bowls, the kids a playmaker.

As far as the contracts go, I think Beane is going after the low hanging fruit first. We’ll see what happens..
