Simms: Gabe Davis is a good player, but he's not a number two
Maine-iac replied to SydneyBillsFan's topic in The Stadium Wall
The problem isn't that Gabe isn't a #2 WR. The problem is that there is no one catching passes outside of him and Diggs. If we had a slot WR or TE who caught lots of underneath stuff and ran the seam once in a while (like Beasley used to) then we wouldn't be so focused on Davis catching 90 passes being more like Diggs. We need a chain mover and Davis isn't a chain mover therefore it must be Davis's fault, except it isn't. -
In retrospect, was letting McKenzie go a mistake?
Maine-iac replied to ChicagoRic's topic in The Stadium Wall
At least Harty can field punts. McKenzie had hands of stone. Whether it's Dorsey or Allen we haven't had a short ball control passing game since Beasley left. -
Roman wasn't there in 2017 (3 out of 4 of those games). Not that Roman ran a run and shoot passing attack but his offenses typically were in the top half of the league in scoring. Dennison was calling the plays in 2017 and Taylor was throwing to one legged Benjamin and Deonte Thompson. One of my biggest fears was that we'd draft a QB in the first and Dennison would be coaching them. That said we made the playoffs so we won more than we lost but that was largely the much improved defense.

He's been injured so Miller hasn't been killing it on the field but I'm sure he has a ton to do with our young DE's showing new found abilities to get to the QB. As his contract plays out I'm hoping our money is reinvested in AJE and our other young DE's.

The crazy thing is that in the box score it says both teams had 12 drives. The Jaguars ran almost 30 more plays than we did though. They also kept running the ball and Etienne killed us in the 4th qtr.

Like to see more of Harris and Murray early
Maine-iac replied to BananaB's topic in The Stadium Wall
If we ran more screens or actually threw to him in some kind of planned out manner he would be more effective. If we want to line up big, grind the ball, and throw to some TE's then there is no reason Harris shouldn't be getting some more carries. Jet's game and this game are both great examples of a few stuffed runs and we give up and become easy to defend. We were bullying the Dolphins around and we should be trying harder to do that week in and week out. -
Kaiir Elam is a liability any time he is on the field
Maine-iac replied to Einstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
Like you've already said Elam was a man corner drafted into a largely zone defense. Moss was a one cut back drafted into a zone run offense that never really ran the ball and never really blocked well either. Somehow I'm hoping we get a few games where the offense gets us a lead Elam can get out on the field and learn on the field. Sometimes guys just need to play more. The scores stay tight he's not going to start ahead of Benford or Jackson. -
Funny you mention that I thought Williams looked like he had potential. I'm sold on Bernard he seems like Milano 2.0. Hopefully Williams does step up. I think Dodson can play LB but I think coverage will suffer.
-
Lots of reports he was back but I didn't here his name called once and didn't see him in on any plays. I think he was on a snap count and didn't play all that much.
-
This is going to come out of right field but I was at the Bills vs Miami on Halloween a few years ago and the offense was struggling and the defense held it together and eventually Beasley caught fire. We need to run the ball enough no matter what and we need a short yardage receiver that you just can't stop. With the offense we have SOMEONE should always be open.

IMO Jones is the crushing loss (if he's out all year). Oliver can play but without Jones I bet he'll be game planned for and disappear at times. Phillips can't stay healthy if he's going starter reps and Settle has yet to do anything that moves a meter.

Looking at the team stats. Both offenses had 12 drives. We had a lot of penalties but the Jags took more sacks. We were horrible on 3rd down and running the ball. I think the fact that we only had 10 rushing attempts by the rb's is telling. We need to run the ball even when we don't have a 2 score lead. If Cook isn't running free after 2 or 3 carries we can't give up. Bring in Harris and punish them a few times and keep 3rd downs manageable.
-
Not sure with the players we have how any team can stop the run and the short passing game and still have Davis and Diggs covered outside. Kincaid, Knox, and Cook should be making a ton of catches or Diggs and Davis should be blowing teams up. If Cooks isn't shaking loose for some runs then Harris should be in there keeping the offense on schedule smashing in between the tackles. In some respects I think early season adversity should keep the team focused through the season but the season ending injuries are piling up.
-
I would love to agree with this except in this game it was the offense the really crapped to bed most of the game and they didn't even have injuries. Defense was on the field a lot. Not sure where our running game and short passing game went but we will not win any shoot outs with the offense that was out there today.

Let's just make pointless responses that aren't on subject all night and our post counts will be amazing! -

Any one can argue anything. Read some of the posts in here. -
Are you saying Toney is anything other than a bad WR? I get it that he plays for a great team and happened to make one catch thrown to him but even a broken clock is right twice a day.
-
How long is Shorter on IR? I'd rather give him the reps and keep our draft picks.
-
Singletary threw a TD pass?
-
He's physically talented. We play a zone most of the time and if you don't know where you are supposed to be and can't stop grabbing guys it doesn't matter what your 40 time is. Hopefully the time he's had watching he's been learning also. I'd actually be interested to see if throwing him out there he could play through some of the mistakes and learn on the field but when you have a really good team you don't usually get those opportunities.

Frazier and/or his System hurt player development

I'm not going to argue Frazier is better but with a healthy roster you could do a lot worse than Frazier. McDermott is a head coach for a reason. He is better and I'm glad he's calling the D. Let's hope we can keep most of the roster healthy this year. -
Kelvin Benjamin 2.0?
-
Glen was playing pretty well then also.
