Kind of late coming back to this but wanted to reply. I was very skeptical when Daboll was hired but have been pleasantly surprised. I do think he's done a good job with Allen. I also would agree we could see a nice jump in scoring next year because even with his improvements Allen left a number of TD's on the field that hopefully he'll capitalize on next year. With all that said McDermott and Daboll fit because they are both cut from the same conservative cloth. Largely I don't see us scoring 25ppg because unless the defense collapses we will be too conservative in both close games and with a lead to score that many points. That said this team would stomp most teams with the current defense and an offense that scored even 23 or 24 ppg.

It was a knee jerk reaction to the fact that they had sold the team out thinking we were going to tank and we came out of the gate winning. If we had lost more games they would have never made the trade. In essence it was admitting they did nothing to help the offense in the off season and were cleaning house. Like everyone else is saying in "hindsight" they might as well have kept the 3rd round pick and just started Thompson and Jones (as bad as he was).

Wonder what's going to happen with Foles. If he gets cut he might be the picture of best NFL back up.

Not a glowing endorsement but part of the reason I mention Shurmur is that I'm more afraid of what might happen if Daboll left than I would be excited. I like McDermott and think he's a great defensive mind but if he's only going to go as far as his OC will take him and Daboll is probably the threshold. Any worse an OC and we are a good defensive team that has a hard time winning. I'm not sure I like the prospects of McDermott shopping the open market for OC's.

The thing that sells me is that it's not like we have to put Beasley or Brown on the bench to get Duke in the game. I can't disagree with anyone who says he should be playing because at this point there is no one I'd rather have on the field with Brown and Beasley than him. Foster for whatever reason has disappeared.

I used to argue it when Rex was here while everyone was blaming Taylor and the offense for loses and here we are almost to the fruition of what I said needed to happen. Taylor and the offense were on the losing side of six games where we scored 24 points or more. To Bean and McDermott's credit I was skeptical but here we are. To be a playoff team and contender you need a defense that holds teams under 20 ppg and an offense that scores over 22 ppg. I can't stress enough the defensive part of that arrangement. Sure the Pats and Brady have a great offense but if you look at the SB winning teams they had the best defenses. So I've said it before and I stand by it. If the choice was a stellar offense or defense I'd take defense every time. Allen and the offense are going to keep getting better and soon it might be a moot point as we will most likely be crushing teams and everyone will throw accolades toward the offense but much like the late eighties where it was first defense not offense that resurrected this team, defense has again resurrected this team.

THE ROCKPILE REVIEW - Patriots Win Again
Maine-iac replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Draw up and execute a handful of zero blitz killing plays on offense and I can see this team getting some W's in the playoffs. Seems to be the closest thing to kryptonite we have encountered. -
That article is all completely true but the interesting thing is how it states but brushes off the fact that the miss to Knox is a TD play that wins the game, Allen's a hero and the offense started slow but won the game. I don't know that Daboll tore the Pats apart but a) it's the Pats and b) again the execution kept points off the board. I've said it before I don't know that Daboll is next level like Roman or Kyle Shanahan but he's pretty good, especially given this units time together and thrown together OL.

It seemed like the Pats WR's were much more involved in this game than they have been all year. It also seemed like we were playing much more man than I've seen all year. I didn't see the situational blitzing I've seen from this defense before and the couple I did see appeared to be almost more of a run blitz. The Pats are steady and consistant and don't make mistakes per se but our previous successes have involved creating enough negative plays to create 2nd and 3rd and longs. We played safe and did the bend but don't break thing but the lack of negative plays I feel is what kept them on the field enough to do more damage. As for where Tre needed to be I can't argue with Harry. I really think his athleticism and size dictates the attention. Edleman is always going to get catches the best way to take him out of the game is just double him which most teams do. I didn't see the RB's catching as many passes I wonder if they were used much more to sure up blocking for Brady. I wish I had it DVR'd to watch again. ps went and looked and the box score says I'm crazy Burkhead was their best reciever.?

I asked myself before this game, do you show all your cards? I really would love to have seen some situational blitzing. That said I do hope we have a bunch of things up our sleeves because we will be playing in January this year.
