Live 2024 NFL Draft thread - Round 1 (Do NOT tip the Bills pick)

Chargers are keeping the pick. -
I'd only go back as far as 33 depending on how many WRs go in the first round before 28.

OBL is now reporting that there is a report (I believe from CBS sports) that there will be an expected run on wide receivers early in the 2nd round. That could move teams at the top of the round to trade into the bottom of the first round where the run will now start. So...there may be slim pickens on WRs in the 2nd round. There are a lot of WR needy teams picking at the top of Round 2.

Happy draft day all you pancake eating *****....

Actually, they had a solid QB. (That was the guy who celebrated with his wife and son when the pick wasn't the QB.) Bo Callahan was the "flavor of the month," much-hyped QB prospect. The GM was under pressure by the owner, so he initially thought he needed to make a splash. In truth, the script for this movie is far-fetched, but it's an enjoyable watch if you like the NFL draft and Kevin Costner. -
Rumor: Bills trying aggressively to move up for a WR in round one
jkeerie replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall
That may be so, but...how many times are there multiple trades expected in drafts and instead, teams stand pat and let the draft fall to them? This draft will likely be different because of the QB needy teams and the number of QBs that legitimately could go in the first round. We've all been disappointed before though with being provided less excitement. -

I wonder how many WRs aren't signed to second contracts because they are traded or because signing them to a second contract is cost prohibitive. -
They were talking about this on OBL. Brownie and Tasker both said the Jets would be lucky to get anything for him and then floated Denver as the likely taker since all they have is Stidham and Ben Dinucci. So...they called it.

Media Day at OBD (Beane, McDermott, Josh & more)
jkeerie replied to Process's topic in The Stadium Wall
It was really a solid interview. Josh is such a genuine guy. He gives credit where credit is due and clearly has an affection for his team mates. At the same time, he mentioned that he trusts Beane with bringing in the best players for the team and acknowledges his coaches...particularly Brady...for what he is learning. Class and humility all the way. -

I agree. Britt and Woolen certainly played well even as rookies. The jury still isn't out on Elam though. I think with the changes in the Bills secondary, Elam will get a real chance this year to prove his worth. -

When someone asked him what it takes to be a leader for the team the last thing he said was, "Someone who doesn't care who is scoring or getting the ball, just as long as we are winning." I love him for saying that! -

I think that is what it is. It's the business side of things. He had to say goodbye to a lot of players that he specifically brought in to build a roster that could win a Superbowl. Last year he built a team with a great deal of depth. Draft picks were poached by other teams...and are starters that couldn't make the Bills team last year. He stretched the Cap to its maximum in the process. Then with all of the injuries, that depth was tested...and the Bills fell short once more. So...this year he had to pay the piper and release players that I believe he truly loved and appreciated. He needs to retool the roster with a draft class that is lacking in a number of areas. And the league moved the goalpost for compensatory picks, leaving the Bills without a 3rd round pick in a draft where he really was counting on one. He has a big task ahead and he's a perfectionist when it comes to his work. He does not want to let the team, the owner, the coaching staff or the fans down. So...the strain is there. Hind sight is 20-20. -
Randy Mueller - maybe only ~150 draftable players this year
jkeerie replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
Couldn't agree more. The Bills always find contributors late in the draft. We only have 10 picks as the 6th was traded to Houston in the Diggs trade. The Bills need depth so this is probably a good year for rookies to make the team. Wouldn't surprise me either if they parlay a pick or two into next year's draft especially a 5th rounder, since we traded next year's 5th as well. -
Tom Brady picks the next QB to win their 1st Super Bowl
jkeerie replied to Buffalo_Stampede's topic in The Stadium Wall
I used to really dislike Tom Brady, even though he came across as likeable in many ways. Then Patrick Mahomes happened. I have achieved a new level of disdain. -
Unfortunately that achievement was eclipsed by Nicole's death. When you mention OJ Simpson you don't think of those 2000 yards.
-
I agree. Josh has never been one to seek self promotion or stage photo/video ops. In fact, quite the opposite.
-
I never saw anything about Diggs working out in the off season until just before the Texans trade. All of these off season practice posts are staged. I will wait for OTAS and training camp and judge what these players are all about.

Media coverage of Diggs trade before and after
jkeerie replied to BarleyNY's topic in The Stadium Wall
This...most don't. They only look at the surface of things. I was watching Around the Horn on ESPN the day of the trade, and the most knowledgeable and reasoned opinion came from Mina Kimes. She sighted his stats the last half of the season and in the playoffs each season, whereas the others looked at Diggs overall statistics over the four years. Mina agreed with the Bills move. The others thought it a mistake. -
Knowledgeable members of the media see it and get it. I'm amazed at the "expert" opinions that say absolutely nothing because they aren't paying attention.
-
Houston just voided those years. They accelerated $3.5M to Diggs this year in guaranteed money, but Diggs becomes a free agent next year.
-
Which is why many NFL executives are praising Beane for the move. If we haven't won with these aging players, it's time to reset and move forward with different players.
-
No...the cap hit is this year. And since Diggs had a cap hit of over $27M this year anyway...the difference is only a bit over $3M on this year's cap. Next year, Diggs is off the books entirely.
-
Disagree. Texans don't have a number 1 this year, so they had little to offer in this year's draft. Getting a number two in 2025...and as One Bills Live reported it is Minnesota's pick (due to a trade) which should be high next year...this is more than you would expect for a 30 year old receiver who would have been cut next year. San Diego only got a 4th for Keenan Allen. So...when you think about it, this trade makes sense.
-
Actually this was a good time to let him go. The cap hit this year is only $3M more than it would have been with Diggs on the roster. Next year, Diggs would have no value in trade since he would be a year older and likely cut for the cap savings. No dead cap hit moving forward. With the depth at wideout in this year's draft, it will be easier to find his replacement.
