McCargo IR'd, Stupar (the TE) to 53 man roster
Dawgg replied to Fewell733's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Some make more mistakes than others. The Bills fall in that category, by a wide margin. Problem is, many of those moves were obviously boneheaded at the time they were made. Just because you stood by the McCargo pick until the very end doesn't mean it's 20/20 hindsight. Edwards and Lynch: nice picks. Especially Edwards. Butler, Williams, and Walker are decent players, but not exceptional by any means. They would be backups on more than 50% of teams in the league. Langston Walker was grossly overpaid given his production. -

And you notice one thing both had in common. The Bills gave up a 2nd and 5th plus the next year's first for JP. The Bills gave up a 2nd and 3rd for McCargo. Two 2nd rounders, a 3rd rounder, and a 5th for the right to select 2 busts. Front offices who make blunders like this get wiped clean. In Buffalo, they get promoted. -

Goes to show that McCargo was not only a sub-par college player (that was pretty obvious in and of itself to everyone but the Bills), he might have been damaged goods. The Bills traded up to get him in the first round, he has barely played in his 3 years in Buffalo, and a trade they tried to make involving him got cancelled because it revealed he was damaged goods. If that doesn't make the front office look like a bunch of bumbling idiots... -

This I definitely agree with. The Bills overpaid BIGTIME in this trade. They gave up a high 3rd round pick just to move up 9 slots in the second round. Way too expensive when they could have had David Harris fall right into their lap in the event Poz was taken. It's funny you mention the trade-up thing.. you couldn't be more correct. In 2006, Marv moved up to take McCargo -- dumb move then, dumb move now. In 2007, Marv moved up to take Poz -- good player but the Bills overpaid bigtime. In 2008, the NY media reported that the Bills tried unsuccessfully to trade back into the first round with the Giants!!!! They were probably targeting James Hardy. When you don't value draft picks and you're willing to just trade them away, it shows in the product on the field. -

I'm not as down on Jauron as most are here. Yeah, the Bills could use a better head coach but the crux of the problem here is and always has been personnel. A good head coach might be able to eek out an extra win with this group, but not much more. If the team spent its money wisely and drafted for value the past few years, we might be hailing DJ as a great coach. -

Thanks BV! I've updated the list and also attempted to order the level of stupidity demonstrated in each of these moves (Top of the list indicate the worst moves). It's amazing how Donahoe gets a lot of flack around here considering Marv really sh-- the bed on this draft. To me, these draft decisions have Modrak written all over them. There is just no accountability in this organization whatsoever. 1. Trading a 2nd and 3rd to grab Jon McCargo in the first round 2. Overpaying for Derrick Dockery 3. Passing on Ngata to take Whitner 4. Re-signing Chris Kelsay to a big contract 5. Signing Tripplett to a big free agent deal. 6. Signing Robert Royal as a free agent 7. Awarding Schobel with a lucrative extension with 3 years remaining on his deal. 8. Signing a washed up Peerless Price to a multi-year deal. -

Yet another one of Marv's boneheaded moves as GM. 1. Trading a 2nd and 3rd to grab Jon McCargo in the first round 2. Overpaying for Derrick Dockery 3. Re-signing Chris Kelsay to a big contract 4. Signing Robert Royal as a free agent 5. Awarding Schobel with a lucrative extension with 3 years remaining on his deal 6. Signing a washed up Peerless Price to a multi-year deal. 7. Passing on Ngata to take Whitner Thank goodness he listened to Bill Walsh and chose Trent Edwards, who I feel will develop into a good QB for many years to come. -
Derrick Dockery is thrilled to be in Buffalo because no other organization was stupid enough to pay an average guard with a record-setting deal.

If the Bills get Michael Vick, imagine

The maximum sentence for that crime is 24 months. He received 23 months. If you think he got any help for being "rich" you are dead wrong. If anyone was helped by Vick being rich, it was PETA, who milked this for all that it was worth. -

I'm simply stating that Vick has paid his debt to society. Since being convicted, he lost his job, he lost his freedom, and he's virtually bankrupt. The judge offered him virtually no leniency, sentencing him to one month less than the maximum allowed punishment. When he gets out of jail, does he deserve another chance? Yes. Is it also a little weird that these punishments value dogs more than they value humans? Yes. -

The Rams' Leonard Little killed a mother of 2 while driving drunk. If that wasn't enough, he got caught driving drunk on two other occasions after that. Yet he is happily playing in the NFL today. Jim Leyritz killed a mother of 2 while driving drunk. He roams the streets as a free man today. Mike Vick killed some dogs and did some horrible things and his punishment has been far greater than that given to people responsible for killing other PEOPLE. Get a grip, folks. I know some of you dog-lovers love your dogs more than you love your own children... but let's not get carried away here. Vick's prison sentence is more than ample a punishment for what he did... get your head out of your as$ (or your dog's as$ rather). -

Jenkins and White were rookie first round picks when Vick was QB and they took some time to develop. They led the league in drops and the only dependable target Vick had was Crumpler. Having said that, yards are yards and the Falcons ranked #12 overall in offense in both 2005 and 2006. In 2006, in addition to passing for 2400 yards, he rushed for 1000 more... he's far from perfect, but saying he "sucks" is just flat out ignorant. -

... or it could be the fact that they were rookie first rounders when Vick was QB and now they have matured into 3rd year players? Nah, that can't be it! -

Seeing as how Vick's WRs led he league in drops two years in a row, no wonder he took off running! -

Seriously. This is the same board that ran Doug Flutie out of town, claiming he "sucks" after leading the team to a 29-19 record and 2 playoff appearances. -
Well... it is Ralph's fault that under his watch, the Bills have been abysmal the past 10 years. When Arizona makes the this year, it will be the Bills and Lions, alone at the top, sharing the distinction of the longest playoff drought in the NFL. That's pathetic. Talent evaluation and drafting has been a major weakness during this time, yet the front office remains largely unchanged. In fact, Guy, Modrak, Overorf and Brandon all received promotions. Until someone comes in and cleans house, expect continued mediocrity.

Is Schobel a better player than we give him credit for?
Dawgg replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's also a testament to how thin the roster is behind him. Kelsay is overpaid and worthless. Denney is so-so. The team invested a 3rd round pick in Ellis, yet aren't confident enough to include him in the rotation. -
There were also murmurs that Marshawn Lynch had some off-field issues. There were also murmurs that James Hardy had some off-field issues. The Bills investigated them and chose them anyway. The same could (and should) have happened in the case of Ngata. Realistically speaking, I think its pretty clear what happened. Marv was infatuated with McCargo and felt he could get adequate value taking him later on in the draft, paving the way for our favorite party-host to be selected about 7-8 slots early.

Good point. I think it was Marv. He tried ever so hard to emulate Polian and the Colts, who also ran the Tampa 2. He even signed their trash (Larry Triplett) from Indianapolis to a big contract, only to cut him 2 seasons later.
