Its Official: Donte Whitner Is a Bust!
Dawgg replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It has taken most posters 5 years to figure that one out! -
He doesn't have to be remorseful. He paid his debt to society and now should be able to earn a living. The fact that Andy Reid, one of the best and most classiest coaches in the NFL, gave him a shot reflects that. Whether the apology was enough to convince YOU is wholly irrelevant.

The 49ers look worse than us right now
Dawgg replied to southernbill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd say inconsistent QB play and coaching. Alex Smith has had 6 different o-coordinators maybe he'll turn the corner this year. They have all the individual pieces to be a great team, just haven't been able to put it together. In no way am I saying they are a great team... simply stating that they have far more to build off at this point than the Bills. -

The Matt Millen of TBD speaks again! The Niners have talent on both sides of the ball that the Bills can only dream of. -

They spent premium picks on the O-Line and it showed today. The Bills lack of talent on the O-Line shows week after week. -
You're not a worse person than Vick. What he did was pretty despicable. But here's a newsflash. The NFL is not PricewaterhouseCoopers. Marv drafted Marshawn Lynch, who is full of character issues. There is plenty of evidence that the Steelers' QB is a rapist. A Ravens WR killed someone while driving with a BAC that is twice the legal limit. A Rams Defensive End not only killed mother of two driving drunk, he got caught driving drunk twice more after that. There is mounting evidence against Ray Lewis for aiding and abetting murder. If you expect the NFL to be comprised of upstanding citizens, it's a good thing you're sticking with your job as a bean-counter
-
And he paid dearly for his mistake. After paying for his mistake in a federal penitentiary, he has a right to turn his life around and pursue a living. Anyone who believes otherwise doesn't understand the ideals upon which this country were founded. And that's a sign of someone who represents pond scum.
-
Whitner was Jaurnon's call. Marv deferred to Jauron. Marv was a joke of a GM. From wasted free agent signings to illadvised draft pics, it's easy to see why the Bills are where they are today.

Told ya so

Big Ben allegedly raped a young girl. The evidence is quite damning and a closer look into his personal life reveals that he does not have a picture-perfect past. Ray Lewis allegedly murdered someone. Even if he didn't actually commit the murder, he aided and abetted the crime, which is just as bad. Leonard Little killed a mother of two while driving drunk. After serving a 90 day jail sentence, he was pulled over for driving under the influence not once, but twice. Donte Stallworth did the same thing recently. He's on an NFL roster. If you want to deal with upstanding citizens, the NFL is not your league. Bottom line: Vick paid his debts to society. He lost everything he had, spent 21 months in prison and now has a right to make a living, regardless of your personal ideological views.

This is his contract year. The 2012 year is voidable and is a mere formality. Whitner will void it whether he has a good season or not, thus making this year his contract year.
-
I did miss the game, so my comment was based solely on that assessment. Perhaps Whitner will be better in this system. Maybe he has "the potential" to be the best safety on this roster. But he certainly has not been the best safety on this roster the past 4-5 seasons. I hope he turns it around this year, I definitely think he'll step it up given that it's his contract year... though it's fairly unfortunate that it takes a contract year for him to produce for a change.
-
Sounds like the Whitner I've seen over the past 5 years.
-
Scott is just a solid player. He's a sure tackler in both the pass and run game and it's quite rare that he lets things get by him. Wilson is solid considering he's only been at the safety position for two years. The problem with Whitner is not that he doesn't make Sports Center caliber plays... it's that he often misses tackles and fails to cover tight ends (ex. Anthony Fasano should donate half his salary to Whitner). He surely had an off year last year, even I will admit to the fact that he's better than what he showed... having said that, he has yet to play like a top 10 pick, let alone a first rounder. I'd be thrilled if that all changed this year but if he was going to break out, he probably would have done so already.
-
I have some great snake oil, you might want to buy...
-
I thought that, until last year when I saw just how much Wilson had improved. At this point both he and B. Scott have played just as well, if not better, than Whitner. If this Tampa 2 scheme was indeed Whitner's achilles heal, we'll soon find out what Whitner can do. I look forward to it (5 years later).
-
I'm pretty sure it does. Otherwise, it would allow a team to circumvent the salary cap. I find it hard to believe that a team could choose to amortize a signing bonus over the life of a contract then have the luxury of avoiding the accelerated hit by "voiding" a contract.
-
The void is usually held by the player. The team, after all, has an inherent void clause in every contract by virtue of the fact that they can simply cut a player and avoid paying him his salary for that year.
-
Donte will opt out regardless of the type of year he has. If he has a Pro Bowl type year, the Bills can then use their franchise tag on him (after all, who else do they have?). And the safety number for the tag isn't nearly as high as some of the other positions so it really wouldn't be a big deal. That way, the team either locks him down for another year or it will trade him for a pick. Yet another mediocre year for Donte means he's gone IMO.
-
Yeah I believe it's voidable by Whitner, which essentially makes it a formality. Either way, this year is a contract year for him, no questions about it. EDIT: he signed CAA agent Tom Condon this summer (who represents every single QB out there) so I'm sure he'll go wherever he gets max $. Either way, barring a Pro Bowl type year, I'd be hard-pressed to think Nix would pay Whitner big bucks when they already have Byrd on the team.
-
Tell that to opposing tight ends.
-
Wawrow is wrong. Donte signed a 5-year contract in 2006. Make no mistake, Donte's playing for his next contract and it probably won't be in Buffalo.

I can see why people are quick to bury Maybin

Same smart-ass remark posters like you made after McCargo's rookie year when it was readily apparent that he wasn't a good football player. Football is not rocket science (though it just might be for you). -

I'd counter that by saying that many fans on this board are borderline delusional, to the point where they'd justify any Bills front office move with vigor irrespective of how boneheaded it was. Maybin certainly shouldn't be vilified given that this is really his first full training camp, but if he doesn't produce this year, time is running out. Delusional fans on this board have stood behind under-performing characters like Whitner, Rob Johnson, Derrick Dockery, and Jon McCargo for years before their below-average intelligence can finally process the fact that these players simply are not as good as they thought they were.
