His rookie year was a wash. Had a feeling it would be when they drafted him because he had work to do to learn this style of defense. Benford was more ready to step in. This was the talk right after the draft and it was a good take.
Last year all reports were he looked great in camp, was spending most of his time with the first team...and then Benford shot past him the final week of PS to start. Seemed peculiar at the time but as it turns out Elam was playing with an ankle injury...which ended up costing him a good chunk of the season.
I think he's got more to offer than we have seen so far. When he came back from IR last year he looked good....not great by any means...but definitely worth being rostered. He needs snaps, though. Tough to see him getting them with Douglas, Benford and Johnson as the top 3 CBs unless injury hits. But more experience on the field in game action would definitely help him. I'm not holding my breath that he turns into Revis 2.0...but it wouldn't shock me to see him take steps forward this year either.

That the team that traded for Kadarius Toney? Signed Kelvin Benjamin after the Bills cut him? Just had a WR act like the freeway was the Indianapolis 500? Had a "Super Fan" convicted of bank robberies to fund his travels?
Like I get it their team won the Super Bowl so the air where they are is pretty thin and all...but every team takes a swing on a guy like Claypool once in a while. No franchise, fan bases or signings are perfect all the time.

As I often say. We don't know what we don't know.
I would venture a guess that his mind is made up. And from there, the Bills organization has made up their mind as well. So what could the hold up be on an announcement?
Doctors. Medical clarification. Making sure he can not only get on the field, but walk off it.
I guessed earlier in the season and my guess remains the same. Buffalo has a loose agreement in place with Hyde. If he returns, Buffalo will welcome him back. If he doesn't return a spot on the coaching staff either this year or next season has been offered.
And if he does come back, I'm hoping it's more of a backup, leadership role rather than close to 100% of the snaps he's seen in the past. Though I like Hyde and wish him nothing but the best...he was noticably slower last year. And how many games did he come out of injured? IMO he's past prime of a guy that's able to be depended on for 17 games. His best role would be spot duty and passing that knowledge bon IMO.

At some point most teams will adjust and it will open passing lanes. Dallas did not...so Cook has a career day. Bills win big.
Joe Brady's philosophy is simple. He's stated it in his PCs numerous times. His philosophy is simply: "What do we need to do to win this game?" Having a WR like Coleman paired with speed like Samuel, a mismatch like Kincaid and a solid ground game gives him the tools to do just that.

My definition of a "drought era" guy has always been a guy that played the majority nof his career in that period.
For example, Kyle Williams to me is "drought era". Sure, he got that 1 playoff game at the tail end...but the bulk of his work was done on bad teams. So he is always my first pick in these discussions.
Second pick, I'm open to a lot of different guys there. What the hey, give me Marshawn Lynch. Sure, he went on to bigger and better games. But not with the Bills. With the Bills he was firmly "Drought Era".

Ulofoshio's description really is right in the mold for what Beane likes in the young LBers he drafts. I'd say he has a type.
If Solomon is even half of as productive winning his pass rushing snaps as Huff was last year...that's a solid pick.
If Carter can be the primary backup to Oliver and rotate in consistently and Bishop is playing a lot I see some upside in both. For me, it's not about if Bishop or Carter start, but how many snaps can they eat up during a game. If Bishop does end up starting in that near 100% of the defensive snaps at safety role that Hyde and Poyer often would, great. If Carter can get 40% of the snaps at DT behind Oliver...huge plus.
I think Davis is going to have a nice role as well. Possibly will be "the guy" in the next 2 years when Cook comes up for a new deal. I think Cook carries the load again this year and we see more of a split the following year as they transition. Kind of like it was during Motor's last season here.

I would be less upset about Beane bringing in this caliber of player if I did not believe there is a gaping hole in the WR room where the primadonna Diggs used to reside. Cap constraints/change in offensive philosophy, however you contextualize it, one has to guess Beane did not plan on trading Diggs and taking on a huge cap hit. What he's done since is reactive, and doesn't seem like a fully thought out plan. Maybe Beane brings someone in who is a more established, higher level player post 6/1, but I'm not confident that happens.
I don't like banking on volume from any of the folks in our WR room right now, and I'm personally not comfortable with the "just spread the targets around" strategy. I still think a dominant WR makes room on the field for others, and who is going to do that with what we have now? We don't have elite route runners, and I don't see a boundary WR who can take the top off, though we have a few fast fellas. Of course, you may luck into someone playing above their past, and maybe Shakir is ascending and will take over that role, but that seems overly optimistic to me.
I think a major discourse over the Bills WR room this off season is simply differing preference on what people believe they "should" have and what we "could" have, so to speak.
People get locked into their thought process of having "fast" WRs, or at least one guy that's 6'4" or a dominant type guy. Nothing wrong with thinking any of that, of course.
I think there are a lot of pluses to a more "spread the ball" philosophy as long as your QB is good at identifying mismatches and exploit them. Yes, a WR like Diggs has been in the past is a huge plus. It does open things up. But during his time here we were very fortunate that he never missed time (aside from when he would pull himself out of games, of course) and left a vacuum of targets unaccounted for.
I also am of the thought that with guys like that, you have to get them their targets. And sometimes that leads to tunnel vision and comes at the cost of lost downs. I'm really interested in seeing what this group can be. We have some mismatches on the field. We need Allen to find those. Now, should they bring in a "big name" Alpha type guy, so be it. But I'm good with what we have right now. We will move the ball.

That's always an odd thing to hope for to me. He's on the roster now. I would figure the "hope" is that he gets the message that he's close to washing out of the league, matures and shows out.
The obsession in this day and age to root for others to fail (especially those on a team you support) is kinda mind numbing to me.

I think Claypool got to thinking that his ***** smelled like Roses just because he was a 2nd round pick and laid down a couple of 800+ yd seasonss.Last year, the Bears benched him then shipped him off to Miami for a 2025 6th round pick after Claypool made any petulance/checking out Diggs might have displayed look like a minor toddler dispute.
In case that didn't get the message across that he better shape up and do his 1/53rd, the Dolphins let him on the field with the offense for 51 whole snaps in 9 games, while expecting him to grind on ST. He was inactive a couple of games, anyone know what was up with that?
Anyway, if the Bills are prepared to manage him I don't have a problem with it - given the Bills cap, it has to be a low $$ deal. Let him compete with Cetus and Shorter and Shavers for the #6 spot
The games I know off hand he was inactive for were right before and after the trade and I believe he had some knee issues as well. Not 100% sure if that was the cause of any inactives, though.
Jokes aside, I agree that the signing isn't a terrible bone. I actually think this may be exactly the team and location he needs at this point. Close knit team. No real distractions. A lot of solid leadership. Coaches that coach and support the players. Contrast that with South Beach. A HC that wants to joke and be buddies. A locker room with quite a few players with odd attitudes (Ramsey, Wilkins, Tyreek ect). And of course the distractions and nightlife of Miami right in his back yard.
Best case he knows this may be his last opportunity and we see him focus and grow. Guy put up 800+ yards each of his first 2 seasons. Let's not pretend he doesn't have talent. Worst case he flakes yet again and he's on the waiver wire and Bills aren't (likely) out much.

What has been sticking out to me in all the number changes and new guys numbers announced...23 is still unassigned to my knowledge. Now maybe it's nothing but coincidence. Or maybe the number is on hold pending an announcement from Micah Hyde at his charity softball game. 🤷🏼♂️

They were in contact with Beckham a while before the draft. They reportedly offered him a contract then. After meeting with them 31 other teams had the opportunity to sign him at what appears to be a severely reduced rate from what he was making in years past. Yet there he was not scooped up. Kind of tells me where the league views him as a player. He's past the "hot commodity" prime and on to signing on the same day as the Chase Claypools of the world.

He's gonna look even older and slower next to the penguin and the abuser. And unless he's Tua's first read on the play he's not getting the ball. I expect Beckham's dad to make one HECK of a "Tua cant play QB" video this year though. Should win an Emmy or something.

Claypool is such a conundrum. He has skills. Flashed them in Pittsburgh from time to time. Showed them in college. I just don't think the dude likes football as much as he likes the paychecks from playing football. It's been said for a few years now about him, but it remains true. If someone could help get his head on straight he could be good. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that happens here.
I'm thinking he's closer to being cut before preseason game 2 than he is making the roster. We shall see.

If the NFL insists on doing this, IMO the best way is to send 4 teams over. Maybe the whole AFC South. Have Jax vs Tennessee and Indy vs Houston the first week for instance. Then switch dance partners and schedule Jax vs Indy and Tennessee/Houston. That way everyone has the same benefit of being in place for 2 weeks.

Making matters worse for the Jets, they don't have the "cheap" out with a 5th year option on Hall. He was drafted round 2. Plus it's the Jets. Despite drafting 2 RBs this year...it's still possible they sign Hall to a new deal anyway. It's the Jets...lol.

1) we had inadequate LB depth - Milano had already been lost to the season. Tyrel Dodson, who replaced him platooning with Poyer, was lost halfway through the final regular season game. Terrel Bernard was lost halfway through the WC playoff. So we platooned AJ Klein, Dorian Williams, and Baylon Spector during the Pittsburgh game after Bernard went out, then Klein, 1-armed Dodson, and Dorian Williams vs KC. Let's just say, "It didn't work".
2) our WR were getting out-physicaled by the KC LB and DB. I'm not sure who it was but I literally saw one of our receivers shoved like 3 yards off his route - all legal and within 5 yds of the LOS
Basically, McDermott and Beane were forced to acknowledge that 31 yr old Matekevich was 100% there for ST at this point, that they couldn't count on Dodson or Spector to back up Bernard at MLB, and maybe Dorian Williams will develop but he's not there yet. So Dodson and Matekevich are gone.
That left our LB corps at Milano, Bernard, Williams, Spector, Morrow, and who? We usually have 6. I don't think they want to count on a late 5th round rookie; if he can beat someone out, great, if not, he can sit on the practice squad.
Even if they 100% count on the return of Milano (and in one of his brief press interactions, Milano said that his recovery was on track and he would have a normal off-season; he strode into the building for OTAs like a man on a mission), the Bills badly need adequate depth at LB, that is an upgrade to Matekevich, Dodson, Klein, Spector, and Williams. Morrow started in Chicao 2 yrs ago and Philly last year; he also played teams. It's been 3 years since Deion Jones started in Atlanta, but he played about 1/3 of the defensive snaps for Carolina last season and more for Cleveland the year before (after an early stint on IR).
Now Spector and Williams may take a step, not saying they can't especially rookie Williams. But if they don't, Beane is a Man with a Plan. None of us want to see AJ Klein walk out on the field at MLB next to Tyrell Dodson for a playoff game, and that includes Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott.
Oh I completely agree with what you're saying with about 95% of that. It's well stated and I believe it's as close to accurate as can be. I do discount the statements made by Milano as players will often say "Oh, yeah, best shape of my life, injuries all heals and at 100%" this time of year without it being the case. Is it an example of an athlete providing accurate assessment of where he is ..or is this a Michael Thomas situation where we hear how close he is for 2 years. Time will tell.
Am I reading way to much into a move like this? Possibly. Heck, I'd even go as far as probably. But it's that lull part of the off-season where moves get over analyzed and often are much ado about nothing.
Still, with the injury suffered all we have really been told is "on track" but the coordinates for said track aren't ever pinpointed from what I have seen. This was from what it looked, a catastrophic knee injury. Is week 1 the goal? A candidate to open the season on the PUP? We won't know until we know, most likely. But taking a chance on vets like Morrow and Jones with the experience they have over some young guys with upside in an off-season where the theme has been "younger" may (keyword may) suggest they are preparing for a later Milano return than week 1.

If there were concern there, they'd have done something more than these moves. Morrow and Jones are considered fringe players and Ulofoshio is a development player. You have to keep in mind that we lost Tyrel Dodson, Tyler Matakevitch, and AJ Klein this offseason. I don't see any way both Morrow and Jones make it to the 53.
Jones at this stage in his career is a Camp Battle body. He was traded to Cleveland along with a 7th Round Pick in exchange for a 6th in 2022. He signed with Carolina in 2023, didn't make the 53, and was re-signed to the Practice Squad.
Losing Dodson and Matakevich is valid. Klein was only brought in as a very late replacement, so in essence he would be "replaced" by Milano's return IMO.
Also, not sure how much the really would have done earlier in the off season without much cap and the draft still ahead of them.
Again, not saying Milano won't be back. But as always, we don't know what we don't know.

This off season they've brought in Morrow and drafted LBer late combined with how almost secretive they have been about the Milano injury since day 1 while having a guy they liked enough to draft in Round 3 last year and Spector. And now this.
They aren't approaching the LBer room in a way that leads me to believe they think an All Pro LBer is returning at the start of the season. Not saying he's not, of course. Just taking a lot of bites at the LBer apple for a team that only plays 2 at a time (with some coverage on STs.)

I don't do autographs. But I wouldn't be disrespectful either.
Hate the opinion ball you want, but I hold no bad feelings for Brady. It's not his fault that Buffalo absolutely refused to field a competitive team for much of his duration there.
And don't give me the "he's a cheater" BS either because had the same situations played out except he played in Buffalo this board would defend him against everything until their dying breath. And that "swarmy cocky" attitude people love to bash on...would play very will in Orchard Park. Y'all would have embraced him even more for it. Those victory Monday videos he posted on social media would have been replayed here with tons of people loving them.
Guy had a heck of a career and was the most successful QB to ever play. He can't hurt you anymore, people. Late the hate go.
