Actually that is a big part of my point. The margin is razor thin. Based on things Beane has said post draft they have a group of players they like. They are content with getting any of them. But what they fail to do is be aggressive and identify and go after the best of the bunch and are happy letting others have first dibs then figure out who is left. They allow other teams to dictate who they take rather then get they guy at the tippy top. That's how we end up with Elam and Coleman instead of McDuffie and Worthy. In a game that was razor thin both of their guys in this instance made plays. Ours were a net negative and a disappearing act. I like Brandon Beane. I just think his philosophy is a bit too passive. Being so very close to the Chiefs it would be great to see him run up the board and grab someone that can make an immediate impact instead of waiting to grab the guy that may be good 2 years from now. And no, I don't mean jumping 3 spots because there is only 1 guy left on their list. Especially in the first couple rounds.

If those are the right guys, we have little way to know. We don't see the work they do or the results. Very behind the scenes stuff. But if they aren't it's up to McDermott and Babich to assess and change if needed. Regarding Bishop; coming out of the draft I had some high hopes for the kid and would have loved to see more, sure. But I think we also have to be realistic. Kid misses a substantial amount bof time hurt in TC and camp. He had to learn the defense and all the communication on the back end once the season started. Especially in McDermott's system the communication is really the key back there. So realistically we got what we got. I do come away with the hope that we saw some really good things out of him late in the year and that will transition well to year 2. I think he's a plus starter to begin the year next year.

In your opinion. And what do you call "significant"? Chase Young signed a 1 year $8Mish contract. Doesn't have anything to do with Groot, either. He's playing on a his option year next season which is in the $13M dollar range. So that already exceeds Clowney. He won't exceed that in a longer term AAV in my opinion. If they extend him I think it's in the 4yr/ $36m-40M area. 9-10 million for a quality rotational DE is good value.

You mean like Bernard flashed last year? Who was the LBers coach? Or like in 2021 when Poyer finally was named All Pro? Wonder who the Safeties coach was then? Both instances...it was Babich. Look, I'm not going to say Babich was great this year. He had some real rough games. But he got some seasoning and hopefully went through some personal growth. I do think maybe McDermott gave him a bit of a long leash and let him go. I kinda feel like maybe McDermott should have been a bit more hands on with him. My personal feeling without basis of what's know what happened behind the scenes. Maybe a bit more mentorship was needed. And you didn't see any growth in Bishop late in the year? Odd.

My point is anyone can point and say "that guy isn't great". That's not being "good at analysis". That's being obvious. If you are good at analysis...please enlighten me as to who is available and an obvious upgrade over what we have. Who would work in the budget. Who would be available at our draft spot and most important...how they fit the system. THAT'S analysis. You state that Groot would command big money. Gimme an analysis as to why you think that. What has he said that leads you to believe that. How much is he going to ask for? That's analysis. See that's the thing. Yes it's a message board for fans and it's nice to point out (as people have done in almost every thread today) who is an issue and should go. But a lot more goes into these types of decisions in the real world. It's not as simple as fans like to talk themselves into it being. That's the point I'm trying to make.

I mean he basically did it already this year.

Aww man, the window is closing again? -
I honestly do not think he was ever healthy enough for contact. I believe they brought him back to help Bishop (Which seems to have paid off as he played better late in the season) and to let him retire on his own terms. Classy move by the Bills. Hopefully, Hyde decides to move into the coaching ranks and is on the staff next year. Could really be beneficial.

I love posts like this. They know everyone who should be replaced and exactly what round and where to find them...but never supply a name. They know exactly what money impending FAs "will command". Well how much do they tell you? Fill us in on all these details. It's easy to know who needs to go. A bit harder when you try and replace them with phantom players.

Cooper DeJean - Would he have made a difference?
BuffaloBillyG replied to ShakAttack's topic in The Stadium Wall
I wanted T'Vondre Sweat. Don't know if he makes a major difference last night, but would have helped throughout the season plenty. Finished with a 76+ PFF grade if that's your thing. -

First Vrabel, then they brought back McDanials and now Marrone. It's like the Patriots are assembling the Avengers of #######s.

My only criticism of this theory is how does a team that has spent to the cap year in and year out...still have as many weaknesses as the Bills do? How does a team that works to get extra picks year in and year out....still have as many weaknesses as we do. Our weakness is drafting mediocre players with a perceived high upside that they rarely teach while simultaneously handing out bad contracts to players that underperform.

What are you doing to get out of this funk?
BuffaloBillyG replied to Rigotz's topic in The Stadium Wall
It took me until the 13 seconds game years ago to realize something. After that game I spent a few months in a depression. Then as the next season approached I saw photos of a few players. Poyer, Allen Diggs and others. In I believe it was Bermuda. Beautiful sandy beaches and beautiful women. All smiles having fun. And it was like, a revelation. It's just football. It's a game played by others that I have no control over the outcome of. I have fun with family and friends watching and discovering...but it won't have any influence over my life, my mood or my outlook. It's a hobby and doesn't define me as a person. Disconnect from the Bills for a little. Clear your mind. Do other things you enjoy. It's literally a game . -
I think I want to wait to hear him speak to the media this week before I decide. I want to see if he has learned anything over the last few years After the 2020 AFC Title game he said something along the lines of "Yeah we feel we are close. Real close. Just a few small tweaks and we will run it back with this staff and this team." And we see it hasn't happened. I want to see if he's finally willing to admit that there needs to be at least one season where they say "ALL IN". And no, I don't wanna hear a damn thing about being right to the cap. Every flipping year the Saints start ot $50M+ over the cap, get under it, and still have enough to grab players like Chase Young, Honey Badger ect. Time to move on from some of the staff as well. Coach Smiley. From everything I've heard...great guy. Well liked. Well once upon a time Andy Reid likes a great guy who he likes a lot named Sean McDermott....but still knew he needed a change at DC and made it. Guy needs to go. Needed to go last year. His units by and large were complete ass. Babich. I thought did ok as a first time play caller. Good coach at the Xs and Os....but his side of the ball isn't stacked with the Jimmy's and Joe's. Maybe bring Eric Washington back who the Bears didn't retain to help out.

Is he though? I don't think his career has warranted him the ability to make high demands. He's not earning TJ Watt or Max Crosby money because he's not on that level even when he is healthy. He's scheduled to make $13M next year under the 5th year option. I think they can work out a longer term deal that secures him at a cheaper AAV in the $9M-$11M a season range. And I'm fine with that amount. He's a quality rotational piece.
-
How are you trading for a Myles or Crosby and still keeping your first round pick for a DT? It's not happening. Either of those guys definitely cost you a first and then some. I expect he will be back ..with a pay cut. Will be interesting to see what he does next year if he can stay healthy. Of course, the Bills eating 30+M in dead cap for Diggs this year may suggest that they aren't afraid of a bit of dead money to move on from a guy. Even if the re-sign Cooper WR is a need. He added next to nothing after being brought in. The obvious first moves in the WR room are to re-sign Hollins and get Shakir an extension. Do it now because after next year it will be even more expensive IMO.
