First he didn’t mean that Mexico was really paying for it. Then he didn’t mean it was a wall all along the border. Then he didnt really mean a wall but a bunch of penetrable beams. Then he was willing to shutdown the government until he got his wall. The French didn’t retreat this quickly! -
“To counteract this bias towards negativity, Gates has asked some of the world's most visionary thinkers to share their rationales for hope, kicking off proceedings with his own list of causes to be optimistic that the world might actually get better this year, including these happy facts: Since 1990 the number of children who die before their fifth birthday has been cut in half, saving 122 million young lives. In the same period, the fraction of people living in extreme poverty has gone from one third to one tenth. More than 90 percent of children now attend primary school worldwide. Women now make up more than a fifth of members of parliaments around the world. Workplace and road safety in the U.S. has risen dramatically since our grandparents' time. https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/bill-gates-here-are-5-reasons-to-be-optimistic-about-2018.html

Of course. That’s the world we live in. But it’s an artifact of typewriting and you may personally thin think it looks better but no professional publication agrees. I used to work with a guy who triple spaced. Maybe true I don’t know. But the doublespace came from that, which means it goes back even further. I also learned to type on them. And have unlearned doublespacing as well as reaching up to move the carriage back to the left.

Hypocrisy is fun to bring up. It’s lazy in an argument but so exciting. You probably feel better now. -

Only here at Conspiracies R Us do we still have a legion of birthers. Awesome. Of course we know how to make DR go silent: Tell us what happened on 9-11 DR. If that’s too hard, and given how many times you’ve ignored the question, maybe get us in on who killed Ron and Nicole. -
How far do we let The Dude's Racism Go?
BeginnersMind replied to Joe Miner's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The Dude is not the person with the darkest background here, as most of us know. This is is an accepting place. -

Two-spacing is a typewriter artifact of mono-width fonts. Think, Books and magazines in the 20th century have all used single spacing after periods. The problem is that when the world moved to modern word processor fonts, typewriting teachers kept teaching double-spacing because it was all they knew. And teachers keep teaching it because someone once told them "it was right." It's not and makes no sense. But it's still around. No publication double spaces after the period but lots of people do it because they were told to do it. Most people who doublespace also think that starting a sentence with a conjunction is forbidden. And they probably avoid splitting infinitives. They believe in silly things.

It's the work you would do in any relationship. I don't ever think of training as work--I think of it as having great moments with friends. And I never look at anything as my dog's fault. I just see a behavior that is a problem for me and reflect, "What did I do to cause/allow/encourage this? And how can we work on something that he'll want to do more?" All my dogs have been the same breed (golden retreivers) but all very different personalities.

Football insurers continue to get out of the market...
BeginnersMind replied to row_33's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The NFL can afford to insure, probably. Maybe the NCAA at the top levels can too. Below that, not many have big budgets. I would call this something to watch. -
It occurred to Pooh and Piglet that they hadn't heard from Eeyore for several days, so they put on their hats and coats and trotted across the Hundred Acre Wood to Eeyore's stick house. Inside the house was Eeyore. "Hello Eeyore," said Pooh. "Hello Pooh. Hello Piglet," said Eeyore, in a Glum Sounding Voice. "We just thought we'd check in on you," said Piglet, "because we hadn't heard from you, and so we wanted to know if you were okay." Eeyore was silent for a moment. "Am I okay?" he asked, eventually. "Well, I don't know, to be honest. Are any of us really okay? That's what I ask myself. All I can tell you, Pooh and Piglet, is that right now I feel really rather Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. Which is why I haven't bothered you. Because you wouldn't want to waste your time hanging out with someone who is Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All, would you now." Pooh looked and Piglet, and Piglet looked at Pooh, and they both sat down, one on either side of Eeyore in his stick house. Eeyore looked at them in surprise. "What are you doing?" "We're sitting here with you," said Pooh, "because we are your friends. And true friends don't care if someone is feeling Sad, or Alone, or Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. True friends are there for you anyway. And so here we are." "Oh," said Eeyore. "Oh." And the three of them sat there in silence, and while Pooh and Piglet said nothing at all; somehow, almost imperceptibly, Eeyore started to feel a very tiny little bit better. Because Pooh and Piglet were There. No more; no less. A.A.Milne

‘Tis a fearful thing to love what death can touch. A fearful thing to love, to hope, to dream, to be – to be, And oh, to lose. A thing for fools, this, And a holy thing, a holy thing to love. For your life has lived in me, your laugh once lifted me, your word was gift to me. To remember this brings painful joy. ‘Tis a human thing, love, a holy thing, to love what death has touched. Who made the world? Who made the swan, and the black bear? Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I mean-- the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-- who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away. I don't know exactly what a prayer is. I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day. Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do With your one wild and precious life? by Mary Oliver
