Question. What is the opinion on G Wyatt Teller?
TigerJ replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't get that sense at all. I think if you polled posters, a very high percentage would say they think he will improve. The question is, how much? He played well enough, you could say Buffalo can get by with that level of play, but we don't know if he'll be a little better, or an all pro or some point in between. Not being certain, left guard may be a position where the Bills may try to hedge any bet they make if they don't have to spend too much effort and money elsewhere on the roster. -
I agree. It depends on what Arizona would ask for a Rosen trade whether or not that's viable for Washington, but I can't believe they'd be so dumb as to put all their eggs in the Case Keenum basket. Agree on Denver as well. Trading away Keenum tells me that drafting Drew Lock is just about a done deal, unless Buffalo can convince some team lower in the draft to leapfrog Denver to draft him.

I think the right question is, Why?

There are those who think Jonah Williams will struggle at the pro level playing tackle because of his moderately short arms. He didn't test awful at the combine, but he didn't stand out either. His strongest positive is that he's technically proficient, but he appears not to be a great athlete. My expectation is that he will be decent as a pro, in either the tackle or guard spot, but he'll never wow you with his play. I think Jawaan Taylor has more athletic tools, and I wouldn't discount his ability to move inside and play guard.

Sleeper Alert: Kahale Warring-TE San Diego State

Yeah, he had a nice combine. Josh Oliver is another tight end who opened some eyes. -
I'd be happy with Campbell.

Question. What is the opinion on G Wyatt Teller?
TigerJ replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He's not a finished product, so one can't be sure of his ceiling. My guess is he'll probably start in the upcoming season. He wasn't great last season. He should be better this upcoming season. We'll know before the end of the season whether he is the long term answer. On the other side, John Miller's inconsistency is unlikely to go away, so the Bills will be looking for an upgrade. Miller will probably get a tender as insurance/depth. Ducasse, on the other hand, is likely to be history. While Miller is likely to get a contract offer, he won't make the roster without competition Spencer Long is in the mix too, depending on what the Bills do at center. -
Well, if Dolegala came in and set the team on fire, that could change Buffalo's thinking, but Buffalo has plenty of holes to draw the focus of their attention. I'm sure the personnel department continuously does research on all positions, but the more obvious needs are going to draw the bulk of their attention.

Kevin Johnson visiting (visiting Browns next)
TigerJ replied to Rc2catch's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly. He upgrades the depth and competition of the cornerback room. -
Williams was never going to come cheap, and the Colts are definitely in an advantageous position to land him. I would have loved getting him but never counted on it happening. I think Buffalo has far better odds of landing Darryl Williams. He may not have the potential star power of Tyrell Williams, but he fills a (different) hole with a quality player and gives us an upgrade in an area where the draft is lacking in elite prospects. As Tyrell would have done, Darryl gives the Bills their requisite Williams with the retirement of Kyle.

As far as Buffalo is concerned, the team is set at QB. That said, they may want a 4th QB arm at training camp. It's conceivable they might try to stash a guy away on the PS (or IR) for the time when Derek Anderson retires. A tall big armed QB might not be the worst choice when your starter is Josh Allen.

He's a possibility. He's far from the worst tackle on the market. Beane and the personnel department has done the research on every impending free agent, including Brown. Of course, they are also aware of every hole the Bills have. The agent of any free agent in whom the Bills are remotely interested is going to get a call. The biggest questions are probably price and appropriateness for the blocking scheme. I think last year Buffalo tried to be multiple, and were not very successful. Members of the line just didn't work very well together. They had no chemistry and were confused about what to do. Bobby Johnson's background is more zone blocking than a power blocking scheme. Trent Brown is a big boy, biggest offensive tackle in the league if I'm not mistaken. I don't really know what his skill set is, but his size suggest he might not be the best fit for a zone blocking scheme.

I'm starting to think that it may come down to Metcalf or Oliver unless the Bills trade down. I think Taylor will be gone, and I think post combine he's the only offensive lineman worth a top ten pick. I agree. Physically, he could probably play either spot. Reportedly, he interviewed pretty well. The question is where is he most comfortable, and is that where the Bills would want to play him, or would McDermott want to take advantage of his versatility and move him around to confuse offenses. I wouldn't be against drafting him, but the Bills would want to have a pretty good idea how they would want to use him before they draft him rather than trying to figure it out after.

Bills have interest in TE Dwayne Allen; visited 3/6
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is a difference between street free agents and prospective free agents, whose contracts expire with the league year. Prospective free agents who were with a team last season are under contract until the new league year starts. Players who are released (cut) from their contract are not under contract and are free to sign with anybody without regard to the date, like the center/guard that Buffalo signed a few weeks ago. -
Little talked about option for Bills at 9: Brian Burns
TigerJ replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Comparing prospects to former players is an inexact science at best. They each have their own set of skills, athletic gifts and experience. The size comparison with Aaron Maybin is interesting, but there is no way to measure how similar he is to Maybin as a player, or to Jason Taylor for that matter. I don't know whether Burns will succeed or not in the NFL, but it won't be because Maybin busted and Taylor was terrific. -

TigerJ replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
As of right now, I don't think too many pundits would think he's the BPA at #9. That could change in another 6 weeks. Of course, the opinions of pundits don't count for that much either. The only opinion that does is Brandon Beane's. -
Article for those obsessing about Metcalf
TigerJ replied to TigerJ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am wary of a modest injury risk with Metcalf, and his less than stellar 3 cone results, but I'm not going to write him off for being too fit. I would not be disappointed if he were the Bills' pick, but I'm fine if they go in a different direction. -
So we stop doing what's been working and roll the dice on Anthony "I don't need football" Brown (after already having had Vontae Davis quit on them)? OK
-
Whether you're for or "agin 'im" here's an article that talks about Metcalf from a health perspective: body fat percentage, neck injury, etc. https://www.buffalorumblings.com/2019/3/5/18249345/2019-nfl-draft-receiver-d-k-metcalf-has-a-crazy-body-fat-percentage-fact-or-fiction-nfl-combine

Browns exploring trade offers for Duke Johnson
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, a fifth would be a decent deal. -
CB Rock Ya-Sin .... a McDermott special
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Rock Ya-Sin had the second slowest 3 cone drill in his position group. That's a bit of a red flag to me. I would think the 3 cone drill translates to quickness and agility on the field, the ability to change directions quickly. The would seem to be an important quality for a cornerback. -
With Phillips, Phillips and Lotulelei, the Bills have three solid rotational guys. They need one more to complete the set. A star would be great, but probably not essential. If they have a chance to draft Quinnen Williams, go for it, but there are a bunch of solid DTs in the draft.

Bills have interest in TE Dwayne Allen; visited 3/6
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Buffalo needs to sign one decent to good veteran tight end. Dwayne Allen fits the bill. His scouting report coming out of college suggested he was a good receiver. Playing behind Gronk in New England, he was never going to get a lot of opportunities to show he can catch the ball. -
I'm OK with it. I think Metcalf can work on flexibility and moves, but he might not be as impressive in his rookie year and his size, speed and strength traits would suggest is his ceiling. Oddly enough Cajuste has some of the same issues as Metcalf - flexibility and agility below the waist, both are modest projects, but probably less so than what Buffalo drafted in the first round last year. Those draft picks seem to have panned out.
-
There may be something to this notion, but with a caveat. Beane knows he's not immune to mistakes. Sometimes players underperform their draft position. Sometimes players you think were going to be good just aren't. I haven't followed the careers of these players, but a few of them fall into that underperforming category. Beane knows this. If he signs a player like that, it will only be because he needs a bandaid and can't find anyone else who will fit the bill and will sign what he thinks is a fair contract. That's less likely this year given Buffalo is flush with cap space.
