Trace McSorley, Penn St - late round pick/position change?
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If he insists on being a QB and lets it be known, assume teams will do their homework, and he will go undrafted. I think the potential that fans see in him as a WR/W/gadget player is what NFL teams see. I think everybody agrees as a QB he's not very good. -

He has gadget player potential. You could use him in the slot or in the backfield. I think the potential of having a player besides the QB who is able to throw the ball is really hard on defenses. Best case scenario, I could see him as a Julian Edelman like receiver who could also throw an handful of passes during the season to gain some big chunk plays against defenses who weren't expecting it. The question is, does he have the talent to do something like that? I don't know the answer. -
What are your plans for watching the draft?

Stay home and hide out in my "man cave" (a small office with my computer and TV). We don't get the NFL Network, so I'm stuck with ESPN or Fox. -
Dwayne Haskins’ father is a strange dude
TigerJ replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know that anyone had a conversation with the mother of Lamar Jackson before the draft a year ago, so she may or may not have acted anything like that, but like Haskins' dad exerted a lot of influence on Jackson through the pre draft process. Jackson seems to have been unaffected by her influence. I wouldn't be too worried about drafting him if I were a team that was interested. He does sound a bit like "It's me and my family against the world." -
I think a post in another thread has it right. Yeldon signed a two year deal. contracts for both Shady and Gore are done after the upcoming season Chances that either one signs another one with Buffalo are slim. Yeldon could be the veteran presence at that point with the Bills drafting a youngster in the 2020 draft, a draft loaded with good RBs.
-
Yeldon is young enough that he has a chance to revive a career that's been heading in the wrong direction. If the Bills can give him decent blocking, he has the skill set to do some damage.

I like the first four picks. I think it goes downhill some after that. I think there are better options than Snell at RB. I don't like a second OT. I'd probably look for a WR. at that point in the draft if not before. I do think Cole Holcomb could turn out to be a solid pick. Gerri Green has some skills and decent athleticism, but I think round 7 is a little late to get the quality Buffalo really needs at DE.
-
I don't agree, but it is a legit take on the draft. I think it is a given that the QB quality in this draft, apart from Murray, isn't what it was a year ago. That said, when teams need QBs, they REALLY NEED QBs. Because they do fear that they won't get the QB they really need because they waited too long is a powerful motivation. Somebody, and probably several somebodies with take QBs earlier than the quality of those QBs merit. I don't know if that will affect the top 10 picks in the draft, but I'm not counting out the possibility. In any case, Buffalo will have several possible prospects to choose from. Hockenson is one of them. I think the Bills could do a lot worse.

Hindsight is a wonderful gift. Unfortunately, it is unavailable to everybody until it's too late. KC had better insight into Patrick Mahomes than everybody else in the league. It would have been nice had Buffalo been the team that possessed that insight, but I'm not going to single Buffalo out. There were other QB needy teams that were also clueless about his elite potential and the steep learning curve that Mahomes would be able to manage. It should also be noted that KC changed their playbook to incorporate a lot of the stuff Mahomes did in college. That is another item that is to their credit. I don't think Buffalo had the offensive coordinator who was capable of doing the same thing at that point. Moving ahead to the last draft, I think Buffalo did much the same thing with Josh Allen that KC did with Mahomes. Buffalo saw upside where other QB needy teams saw a project. Lots of people thought Buffalo "settled" for Josh Allen, where Brandon Beane thought he was getting a gem. Allen is still not a finished product, and it's still possible he could disappoint in his second year, but it's also possible he could blossom into a great one.

With the 9th pick the Bills take MLB Devin White

Agreed. Beane is in a much stronger position in this draft, and he is a shrewd general manager. -

I don't think it is impossible for the Bills to end up with Devin White, but the Bills would need to be convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is the best player available. -
There may be more disruptive defensive linemen available when Buffalo is picking. I wouldn't be totally shocked if he is Buffalo's pick. I just don't think he is the most likely choice at this point.

I think Devin White is going to be an outstanding middle linebacker in the NFL. I also think that when McBeane traded up to pick Edmunds last year they knew exactly what they were doing and intended that Edmunds was going to be their long term answer at middle linebacker. I don't think Edmunds did anthing or failed to do something that has dissuaded them of the convictions they had about Edmunds last year. Given that there are some other areas of need and the possibility of some outstanding prospects at those positions, I just don't think the Bills are going to pick White. If I'm wrong, they I will be surprised and amazed, but until then I will continue to have that opinion of the Bills' draft plans. -
The sophomore slump for QBs, if it happens, is mostly due to the attention defensive coordinators pay to them. The tendencies of the QB become better understood and there is more film available. Thus, coordinators may be able to game plan a little more effectively. As for the QBs themselves, rarely would they actually become worse. Trent Edwards was an exception for the Bills (I don't know if it was his sophomore season). I think he had a bit of PTSD after getting shell shocked by an opponent's pass rush. Most QBs get better in the sophomore season, though it may not always show. I don't have any worries about Josh Allen in that regard. He seems to have plenty of mental toughness to go along with his athleticism and skill set. The Bills have taken steps to upgrade the offensive line and receiving weapons. Brian Daboll and Sean McDermott seem to have a good handle on how to handle a young QB, so I expect him to improve quite a bit.

I don't get the reasoning that 10 is too many draft picks. If a trade makes sense, 10 picks may give you some freedom to do it,. but if it doesn't, or there is no opportunity, having and using all 10 picks is not a tragedy, even if some of them don't make the team. The goal is to create competition in training camp. If you've got 7 picks in rounds 4-7 and 3 of them make the team, you shouldn't be disappointed that 4 failed. You don't know when you draft them which of those seven drafted players are going to make the cut. Having 7 picks in the lower rounds gives you better odds of finding players who can contribute than if you only have 4 picks. Moreover, the ones who don't make the team, if they are at least competitive, will make other players work harder and get better. You need 90 players on the roster in training camp. Sometimes, you can find a gem like Robert Foster or Levi Wallace from among the UDFAs you sign to fill out a roster, but you have better odds of finding those gems with drafted players.

Alpha Mock V2.0 - Top Ten and Bills picks over 4 rounds
TigerJ replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not happening. -
It's pretty well known that the Jets want to move down and accumulate some picks. Anyone they pick at #3 is a fall back option in case they can't find a willing trade partner. I could see Oliver being a Greg Williams type player. Even though he's an interior defensive lineman, he's twitchy and he's aggressive, both traits that Williams would like.

Help out Matt Barkley - who knew these existed in Buffalo?
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Most spiders are venomous. It just that most of them don't have enough or potent enough venom to give you more than a little skin irritation. The brown recluse and black widows are the exceptions in the US. There's no red hourglass that I can see on that spider, so that would rule out a black widow. I'd step on it and not worry too much about what kind it is. -
Bills don't gotta trade up. Beane has the freedom to do whatever he wants to do. If he want to trade up, he has the draft capital to do so, at least a modest trade, but he doesn't have to do so. Trading up will happen if 1. (and most important) there is a player Beane covets that he does not think will be on the board when Buffalo is on the clock. 2. There is a willing draft partner at a spot that makes sense to Beane. 3. The asking price is fair in Beane's mind. 4. Beane has the picks he's willing to part with. If those four conditions are met, a trade up will happen, but just having 3 extra day 3 picks does not guarantee it.
