Who had the strongest arm in NFL history?
TigerJ replied to major's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Jamarcus Russell, proving that a great arm does not a quarterback make. Maybe it was a bit of an exageration, but it was said he could throw the ball the length of a football field. -
He is a little light for a linebacker, but might have the frame to add what he'd need to be OK. With the NFL being such a pass happy league, most teams play nickel defense more than they play their so called base defense. Perhaps McDermott could see Derwin James as a hybrid player who would be ideal in a nickel. He's fast enough to cover tight ends and a lot of WRs, and big enough not to be a liability when offenses end up running the ball in "obvious passing situations" as they so often do.

QBs, NFL Draft, Identity Politics (New Poster)
TigerJ replied to CamboBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Welcome Bill. If you could ship a little southeast Asia tropical heat back to NY State, I think all of us would appreciate it. I'll react to your draft observations. I think the Browns could go Darnold or Allen. They feel like they bought time with the acquisition of Tyrod Taylor for a raw, high ceiling QB like Allen to make a successful transition to the NFL. I have seen no evidence anywhere that the Giants have any interest at all in trading down. The murmurs are that they are happy to be at #2. The Jets are getting to be almost a consensus pick as the destination for Josh Rosen. I agree that most of the trade speculation is going to focus on pick #4 going forward. The Broncos pick at #5 and there is at least speculation they could try to draft Case Keenum's eventual successor here. The teams you mentioned all might have motivation to try and move ahead of Denver. I don't think Lamar Jackson is in play here, not because of his color, but because he is less conventional than the others. Combine that with the things he needs to correct, and I think the perception is that #4 is too high for him. I think there is a possibility Josh Allen might be gone before Denver picks. If he is, and Buffalo hasn't traded into #4, Mayfield is a real possibility for Denver. I think Lamar Jackson will be available at #12. I am not sure he's a great value there, but I wouldn't complain if Buffalo felt they like him a lot and needed to do it at that point rather than risk Arizona picking him at #15. -
This is what I've been saying all along....
TigerJ replied to Hebert19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Kiper is dead on. At least two that Kiper mentions, Buffalo has no chance to get. I don't think they'll be able to trade up to the top 3 if they want to. They might not have a chance at three that Kiper mentions. The good news is that if they decide they want to trade up as high as #4 the price shouldn't be nearly as high as what the Jets paid to get to 3. If they did end up drafting Lamar Jackson or Mason Rudolph, I don't think the Bills would be nearly as bad off as some think. Lamar Jackson didn't have real good ball velocity at the combine, but that may be to 2 issues that some have observed. First, he seemed a little tentative as if he was trying to be too careful at the combine. Second, he tends to pass from a narrow base some of the time. That's a footwork issue and is considered correctable. Until he threw at the combine, observers thought of him as having a very good arm. With some coaching, they might be right. I think Mason Rudolph is being penalized by observers for the offense he played in. Yes, he's going to have to make a transition and learn to make NFL reads and throws, but he's a very smart kid and not a terrible athlete. For either Jackson or Rudolph, I don't know that the transition into the NFL is going to be any more difficult than for Josh Allen, and Allen may be drafted in the top 3. -
I would be OK with this draft. I might pick one of the players still on the board instead of Denzel Ward, (Calvin Ridley, Harold Landry, McGlinchey, or even Derwin James, but in this mock, the top 5 QBs are all gone before Buffalo picks. Many mock drafters decline to mock trades because they are such a crap shoot. Given that condition (no trades) I think Mason Rudolph is a pretty reasonable pick at #22. The mock checks a lot of boxes for the Bills and some of the later picks have enough good qualities they could be considered sleepers.

Mel Kiper's Nightmare Mock 3.0
TigerJ replied to BillsFanForever19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Best case scenario for the Bills - 2 QBs are drafted in the top 3 picks. It's very possible that 3 are drafted in the first 3 picks. If that is the case and Buffalo really likes the one who wasn't drafted, I think they would trade up. If they don't love him, they'll stay put and Denver might very well pick him. If they don't, Arizona might trade up. If they don't, Miami might pick him at 11. In any case there is a bit of a gauntlet that fourth best QB is going to have to drop through to get to the Bills at #12. And it's also possible that Buffalo actually likes the fifth and sixth QBs more. -
DE Terrence Fede Visited the Bills - Signs a 1-Year Deal
TigerJ replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This may be a due diligence kind of thing. His agent contacted the Bills saying he was underutilized had has good athleticism. The Bills figure they might as well take a look. He would be cheap, his contract would be less than that of Davis I presume - most likely vet minimum. The Bills signed Eddie Yarbrough last year and didn't pay him a whole lot, but Yarbrough did some good things. You never know when you might dig up a gem, so you keep digging. -
3-27: McDermott Speaks at the Annual Coaches' Breakfast
TigerJ replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would be shocked if a deal happens before the draft. I don't think the Bills can get to the top 3 without mortgaging Terry Pegula's mansions. We really don't know if two QBs are going in the top three or three will. Both scenarios are possible. If three go, there is no way the Bills can know which one will be left. Unless the Bills value all four of the top QBs highly, I can't see them trading up with the risk they are left with a QB they really don't like. -
Thinking that Buffalo is not really going to get the chance to draft most of the top 4 (one or two may slip down far enough for Buffalo to trade up and get him) I appreciate the film work you did on the next couple of guys (Jackson and Rudolph). If the Bills end up selecting one of them, it gives me a little more to go on.

McDermott: NFL is a “drop-back league”
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Even Josh Rosen is a work in progress to some extent. I'm sure the top couple of QBs in the draft will play sooner rather than later in the NFL, but it would be shocking if every one of them didn't have some growing pains. I'm of the opinion that even if they want to, Buffalo is not going to have the opportunity to get into the top 3 of this draft, so unless they can trade for an experienced starter in the league (which would be impossible, they aren't going to get a QB who isn't a work in progress. If your comparison is Deshaun Watson, there is a chance that Lamar Jackson could start in 2019 and be effective, but as Watson is still learning how to be an NFL QB, so will Jackson need some time to grow and learn. I think Buffalo's QB situation is actually better than Houston's was at the start of the last season. -
McDermott: NFL is a “drop-back league”
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've only seen snatches here and there of his play, but while he certainly can take off and run, the offense at Louisville was more conventional than most college offenses. Lamar Jackson is a work in progress, but I think it is inaccurate to say he can't drop back and pass, and be good at it. -
Josh Rosen’s coach said he would take Darnold 1st
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think Rosen will be the third or fourth QB drafted. -
Saying hello and thoughts on the draft
TigerJ replied to Skins Malone's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hi Skins. Welcome. I wouldn't say I'm unwilling to let go of the money, but I am very wary of spending it on the wrong QB. Personally, I don't think the first three picks of the draft are for sale. The Jets are not trading away the pick they just overpaid to obtain. I think Cleveland wants to pick one of the top QBs. There are reports that both Cleveland and the Giants like the same QB. There is also a report that Cleveland actually likes Josh Allen and is bluffing about their preference of Darnold to get the Giants to trade up. The Giants, for their part are making noise about liking other players who don't play QB. Their owner was just quoted as saying #2 is not too high to draft a running back. That does not mean that a trade up to #2 is impossible. I will just be very difficult and very expensive. So, say Buffalo contemplates trading up, but not to #2. At least 2 of the top QBs will be gone by the time Cleveland is on the clock at #4. It's entirely possible three QBs will be off the board by then. I think it's highly likely that Darnold will be gone, and almost as probable that Josh Allen will be gone. Beyond that, who knows. There is no consensus and no reliable leaked information about the intentions of the Jets. Some have them liking Allen, some Rosen and some Mayfield. Not only do we not know the position that these players occupy on the Bills' draft board, we don't know how closely they are valued by the Bills. Are they all real close in Beane's mind, at least in terms of draft value? Or is one far more highly rated than the others? Are they all that much more highly rated than the next QBs on Buffalo's board? Depending on the answers to those questions, Buffalo may try to have a conditional trade in place, but I don't really believe they will pull the trigger until draft night. I just want the Bills to be as sure as humanly possible they are making the right move, especially if they're giving up that valuable draft capital to make a big move up. If they do, I will absolutely support them in it, but they'd better be right. -
If Buffalo does not trade out of #12, and if they draft a position other than QB at #12, I think linebacker is the most likely pick. It could be Roquon Smith or Tremaine Edmunds. After that, I think defensive tackle or wide receiver is next most likely. The tackle could be Vita Vea and the WR could be Calvin Ridley. Cornerback is not an impossible direction, but IMO it's down the list a bit. But then, that's just me.

It's tough to maintain separation if you're slow. Yes, slow WRs can be successful in the NFL. There are plenty of examples: Anquan Boldin, Cooper Kupp, Jarvis Landry are just a few. It is OK to have receivers like that on your team, and to start them, but all things being equal, a speed receiver can maintain speed better, and has a better chance to get yards after the catch. You'd like to have a guy like that on your team who is good enough to start if you can.

The Bright Side Concerning Peterman
TigerJ replied to ProcessTheTrust's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He doesn't have a great arm. In the game where he got the 5 interceptions, he clearly had not grasped the fact that NFL DBs can cover more closely and anticipate better than their college counterparts. He's never going to have a great arm, but he may get somewhat stronger. There's no reason that he can't learn to respect what DBs can do and adjust his play accordingly. I applaud the continued search for a QB. There is really no choice about that. I have not ruled out that Peterman could start in the NFL and be successful. Beane cannot and should not count on that being the case, however. -
How Did Manziel Suddenly Become Relevant?
TigerJ replied to Irv's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's another story. If it were up to some GMs and coaches, I would guess he'd be signed. I think owners probably are insturcting GMs not to sign him. They don't want the inevitable political controversy. -
I like the players picked, but it hurts to have given up those draft picks.

How Did Manziel Suddenly Become Relevant?
TigerJ replied to Irv's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Teams are always looking for a QB. Manziel is trying to finagle one last chance for an NFL career. That's why he can have a pro day and have 13 teams represented. In itself, that doesn't make him relevant though. He's got to get signed, then avoid getting cut in training camp, then be fortunate enough to get a start at some point and not poop his pants when he does. If all that happens, then maybe he'll be relevant.
