How much difference does Edmunds' size and speed make?
TigerJ replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sometimes when you get a guy with superior measurables, he will tend to rely on his athleticism and get a little bit lazy in his pursuit of mental mastery of the game. In the case of Tremaine Edmunds, however, he appears to be afootball junkie who was dedicated to film study at a far earlier age than most players in the NFL, thanks to his father, a pro bowl TE in his professional career, who was Tremaine's high school coach. The result of his father's instructions is a player with superior size, athleticism, instinct and football IQ. Given all of that, I will be disappointed if Tremaine doesn't turn out to be a perennial pro bowler. -

Would Allen have been there at 12?
TigerJ replied to Awwufelloff's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm buying reports that Arizona loved Josh Allen. I think it was even more of a given that they would have traded up for Allen if Buffalo had not taken him. -
It's statistical analysis. Of course, it's a lot more detailed than college completion average, but it's still an analysis of a current player based on his college statistics as compared with the college statistics of past QBs. That is what gives you the overwhelming odds that Allen will bust. I get that he was a very high risk pick, but past statistics don't necessarily determine the future, only sets odds for the future. Since Allen is a Bill, and no amount of statistical analysis is going to change that, I choose to hope for the best, that his natural gifts, propensity to work his tail off and a wise coaching staff can help him beat the odds.

Dumbest Power Ranking Write-Up of all Time
TigerJ replied to OCinBuffalo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The guy is a lousy writer, but he makes a few valid points. The Josh Allen pick is not going to be an immediate benefit to the Bills. AJ McCarron is something of an unknown, but does show potential and Tremaine Edmonds will be a day one starter, and probably have a positive impact on the team early on in his career. -
Kyle Williams has quicker explosion off the LOS. That's the factor that has allowed him to be disruptive in the backfield over the years. They're both good at hand fighting in order to shed blocks. I think that's where Harrison's wrestling background gives him a leg up on some DT prospects.

Cam Newton scouting report compares to Josh Allen
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There's no question that McDermott coveted a middle linebacker with off the charts athleticism. Tremaine is a bit slower than Kuechly (who ran in the 4.4s). However Tremaine is much bigger and stronger. -
His skill set sort of parallels Edelman's too. Not to suggest Proehl is as good or anything, but his strength is creating separation in the short passing game with quickness and precise route running. He might have better pure speed than Edelman as he runs in the low 4.4 range.

Bills bringing in another QB, this time from CFL
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills will only keep 4 QBs for training camp. If they sign Apodaca, they'll cut the guy they signed from Shippensberg. Not that there's anything special about the Shippensberg guy, but I don't know that there is much point in juggling your fourth string QB. -
Why the Allen project may be different
TigerJ replied to Batman1876's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The OP articulates everything I have thought about Josh Allen. Like the OP, I'm not advocating we reserve his spot in the Hall of Fame just yet. By definition, the end result is unknown with a project QB, and Allen will have ample opportunity to bust. Yet I agree there are reasons to take a chance on him sespite the long list of project QB failures. -
Yes. I'm hoping the difference will be noticeable.

Good to "see" you, Ice Bowl. I had not followed the Packers draft, but looking it up tonight, it seems like you were filling some needs. Top two picks were cornerbacks, and among the top five prospects at CB at that. Oren Burks was a guy that I think some thought would be a fit for McDermott in Buffalo. I have to admit, I'm not familliar with Moore or Madison, other than what I read at NFL.com. It looks like Moore is a possession type receiver with length and a nice vertical to get balls thrown over DBs' heads. Madison looks like he'll be moving to the interior of the offensive line where he'll need to get stronger. Good athleticism though. In all, it looks like a draft to fine tune a roster instead of to blow it up and start over. Aaron Rodgers is the kind of QB who elevates the play of his teammates, so that is always going to be something that opponents will have to contend with.

I guess my reaction, besides saying again that knee jerk grades for drafting (grades handed out right after the draft) are worthless, is also to say that there seems to be a great correlation between draft grades and who the grader likes as a QB prospect. Silva obviously likes Rosen, hence the Bills had a terrible draft, having drafted Allen. The other thing I've seen a lot of is the tendency of media observers to rate cornerbacks from the perspective on man coverage. Multiple times I've seen mock drafters suggest Buffalo picks a cornerback because he has a great skill set for man coverage. Hello! Buffalo runs zone devense the vast majority of the time. Taron Johnson's skill set is an excellent fit for a zone defense, particularly foro the slot, where Buffalo happens to have a need.

one thing that has gone unmentioned - talent level on D
TigerJ replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That, and retooling the running backs. Shady may or may not stick around. He's at an age where he could hit the wall anytime, but even if he stays and is productive, Beane will want to add some youth to the backfield besides at QB. -
Interesting quote from MMQB, possibly in reference to Bills
TigerJ replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Beane wanted to keep his second pick in the first round, so a trade with the Giants was never going to happen, Still, calling to find out Gettleman's price was part of the due diligence he neded to do. -

Part of the consideration is cost. Veterans will cost you the vet minimum, whatever that is, and can count against your salary cap. UDFAs cost you a little bit of nothing. -
Harrison Philips had a Wonderlic score of 35. This interview gives you a peek at why.

A Quick Note About Levi Wallace.....
TigerJ replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Wallace was never going to be a draft pick because of the speed issue, but he's got enough positive qualities that he can make a contribution to some team in a role that doesn't put him opposite the other teams best speed receiver. I don't know if that will be the Bills when all is said and done. -
Take draft grades with a grain of salt
TigerJ replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They are opinions based on a certain quantity of information. Media pundits look at a certain amount of film, and measurables, all the stuff we know exists, and form opinions about player rankings before the draft. They also look at team needs based on publically available information. If a team picks a player hat's high in a pundit's rankin, and especially if that player fills a need that they perceive based on available information, the pick gets a good grade. Teams generally have more information on prospects than do media pundits, becausse they also have access to the same info pudits obtain, puls they have a staff of scouts who watch more film, talk more directly with players and talke with past coaches, sometimes going all the way back into high school than pundits can afford to spend. Sometimes teams have some ideas about how they are going to fill particular team needs that media pundits are unaware of. Still there is an inescapeable subjective aspect to ranking players. Sometimes the media pundits are right and team GMs are wrong. It probably goes the other way more often though. When I looked at the Bills draft picks, I saw the name of Ray Ray McCloud, did my pitiful little bit of research, and my thought was, "Why in the heck did they draft this kid?" But in the end, all I can do is wait and see. Maybe in their evaluations the team is looking at something others aren't seeing or weighting something as far more important than what the media thinks. Ray Ray is versatile if nothing else. Maybe that's more important to McDermott and company than we ever dreamed. At the very least, he's got a cool name. And if you don't like that you can call him "Highlander." -
Beane not indicating Josh Allen will definitely redshirt
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sure. Why not let him compete? I don't think the Bills feel any pressure to start Allen though. If Peterman or McCarron starts and that drives Allen to work that much harder, that's not a bad thing. -
One thing is for sure...Beane and McD are NOT conservative
TigerJ replied to Roundybout's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm definitely a Beane supporter, and I support the decision to draft Josh Allen, but if Allen doesn't develop, it could be a tough few years for McDermott and Beane.
