I think McDermott and Beane have higher hopes for Josh Allen than Cam Newton''s ceiling. Yes, they are both big athletic guys, but I think Beane is hoping that Allen will eventually be better at reading defenses and distributing the ball than Newton.

Matt Barkley Will Be the Bills' Starter vs. the NYJ
TigerJ replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
OK. I can agree to disagree. What I can't agree with is the notion that anyone who disagrees with your position must lack a brain. -
I buy Beane's declaration that the Bills are not in tank mode. I think he' fully understands the Bills aren't going anywhere this season, but he expects them to try and win games. At the same time I think he's more cognizant about trying to make moves that will improve the team in future seasons going forward than he was at the start of the season. As far as the QB position is concerned, I think the focus has to be developing Josh Allen in hopes that he develops into the franchise QB we all want. I don't think that identifying a long term backup QB is an immediate concern. I'm in the minority in that I don't think ope is gone with respect to Peterman. I think his problems can be fixed, and while he doesn't have a cannon arm, he's got as much or more of an arm as other QBs who have been successful starters, to say nothing of successful backups. I'm not married to him, though, and I'm not sure if he has enough potential to p... off that sizable segment of Bills fans that are ready to tar and feather him and McDermott too if he sticks with him. Matt Barkley reminds me of a more experienced version of Nate Peterman. Like Peterman, he lacks legendary arm strength. He had a productive college career and a disappointing pro career, but he's young enough to think in terms of him having a long term stint as a backup if he can get it going. Derek Anderson could probably go another 4-5 years if he wants to. I'm not sure he wants to. I don't think the Bills have to answer that question this weekend.

If Allen is not ready to go, it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things whether it's Peterman or Barkley. Whoever McDermott things will be better at getting the ball into the hands of receivers is fine with me. I'm not into tanking, but the actual win is less important than the players finding a way to play capably on offense. -
The roster changes are an indication that the team is shifting from doing what they can to win this year to developing for the future. Lewis is a younger player who has some areas of his game that need development. He may have been working and improving in practice. Phillip Gaines also has some shortcomings, but unlike Lewis, what you see is what you get. He's to the point in his career where he's not going to improve that much, but Lewis has plenty of room to grow. Hopefully he's been doing exactly that.

This thread is a perfect exmple of what I said in an earlier post. Fans are not objective enough to base any kind of action on what they say. We have fans who say Peternan played well and fans who say it was his worst game. I'm not sure the latter is possible considering the stinker's he's played. Statistically, he wasn't terrible, if you discount the first two fumbles that a lot of posters agree were not his fault. I see some criticisms that he threw too many passes that were short of the sticks when they needed first down yardage. That can be a legitimate criticism, but given the terrible state of the Bills' offensive line, no QB is going to have a lot of time to wait for a receiver to get open down field. Whatever Peterman's ultimate potential, I think he may have gotten his last shot as a starter in Buffalo.

Are We/Should We Be Tanking?
TigerJ replied to The Real Buffalo Joe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think they are going to start playing younger backups in place of underachieving veterans where possible. That will create a risk for even poorer play at those positions than it has been, but it could be better in some cases. I don't think the Bills will actually be trying to lose games, but we know they don't actually have to try. -
I was not able to watch the game, so I can't comment intelligently on what took place. Moreover, I don't trust the objectivity of anyone who posts here, so you haven't helped me. All I can be sure of at this point is that McDermott is not going to carry 4 healthy QBs. As the highly drafted rookie, Josh Allen stays, and I think Barclay, who hasn't had an opportunity to suck in a regular season game, is probably safe. I wouldn't think Anderson or Peterman could be considered safe, but I'm not sure whether the Bills would consider cutting one or both of them. If, as some of the above posters has suggested, two of Peterman's three interceptions today were bad bounces, that might give him the advantage, but obviously neither Anderson nor Peterman is doing anywhere near enough to win a game. It probably would not be wise for a fan to get too attached to either one.

It all depends on what each word/phrase means to the OP. I selected "supporter" because I like Peterman as a person. I think there are lots of things to recommend him, and I think there are enough good qualities that suggest he could eventually be an NFL QB. However, I would be surprised if he esperiences that success in Buffalo. If he doesn't have a stellar outing on Sunday, I don't know that his latest chance continues. I think that McDermott is likely to start Matt Barkley if Peterman throws interceptions on Sunday, and the Bills lose ugly. That's if Josh Allen still isn't ready to go on November 10th.

This is close to what I'm thinking and expecting.

I believe that Brian Daboll's playbook is as thick as any OC in the NFL. Moreover, it's not set in stone. He added plays for Derek Anderson because Anderson liked and was comfortable with them. In a given game, he only uses a portion of it, based on what his QBs are comfortable doing, and what he thinks has the best chance of working. He's not infallible. It could be tt errors in judgment as well as the limitations of his players may make him look ineffective and boring, but I don't think it is an issue of a lack of creativity.

Players get hurt? Shocking! As far as this year's draft class is concerned, I think the hope certainly is that Josh Allen will be a franchise QB, and that Tremaine Edmunds will be a decade plus starter at middle linebacker. Harrison Phillips, I think, was seen as a possible starter. Everybody else was a possible depth contributor. If one of the later draft picks eventually becomes a quality starter, that is seen by the team as a bonus. Unless Anderson/Barkley/Peterman suddenly clicks and plays well enough to keep Josh Allen on the bench, then they revert to the original plan- let Allen learn as a backup this year and starting sometime next year. In any case, most people in the know will say you can't really evaluate a draft class in the year that the draft took place. I think Buffalo has made a few other additions that might have potential as future rotational players or better. Jordan Phillips was a real interesting signing IMO. He has an incredible size/athleticism profile. I'm not sure what the problem was in Miami, but so far he seems like a good fit in Buffalo, and at 26, he's just approaching his prime. Trent Murphy was a gamble because of health issues, but had in paid off, Beane would have looked brilliant. In any case, next offseason is his best chance to make a huge impact building the team.

I'm not advocating the replacement of Dawkins, but I think if the Bills had an opportunity to sign/draft a top notch left tackle, it could certainly work to kick him inside or to right tackle.

Unless a team is in extreme win now mode, every GM/coach combination is attempting to build a roster. Some are better at it than others, and some salary cap situations make it more difficult or easier than others. The problem for fans, I think, is that until a team is well into the team building process, it's really hard to make a judgment objectively about whether or not it is succeeding. Fans, IMO, are generally not the most patient class of people on the planet, and I think Bills fans (because of a long history of mediocrity) are less patient than most. My concern is that if Joe fan gets his wish and every coach/GM, who doesn't build a consistent winner in two years time, gets fired, in only guarantees the pattern of mediocrity with continue forever.

Terrelle Pryor in Buffalo! Update: He's signing!
TigerJ replied to Roundybout's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I like most of what I'm reading about him. He's got a big ego, which can be both a good thing and a bad thing. He's got an elite size speed combination, and is said to be a good route runner. Doesn't have great hands, but not bad either. Back to the ego thing. Any top football player has to have a healthy ego. It's essential to believing you can play in a big boy's league. He's not above complaining if he doesn't get enough targets, doesn't like what the coaches are asking him to do, the QB isn't doing enough to get him involved in the game. I think it's healthier for team chemistry if players keep thos kinds of issues in the locker room. He also has a bit of an injury history. On balance, I tk it's an excellent signing. -
Derek Anderson injury - in concussion protocol
TigerJ replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Peterman has one critical weakness. He throws interceptions on out patterns. If he can figure out why he's doing int and correct it, he's a pretty serviceable QB, but nothing is going to kill your team faster than interceptions on out patterns, because more often than not they end up as defensive touchdowns for the other team. -
MNF Game day thread - Pats vs Bills

Why was Brady not flagged for intentional grounding? Yes, he was outside the tackle box, but no the pass didn't nearly get back to the LOS. -
McCarthy is a West Coast guy. You replace Daboll with McCarthy, and you're planning for yet another wholesale change. Josh Allen will have to learn an entire new offense while at the ame time continuing his transition into the NFL. Not sure if he would use the same blocking schemesThere is probably going to be some personnel change on the offense anyway, but you ratchet that up to wholesale change with a new OC, and forfeit any continuity you hope to develop on the offense. No thank you.

How does a QB deficient team pass on Mahomes/Watson
TigerJ replied to Rebel101's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. In hindsight we can see that Mahomes and Watson are wonderfully talented QBs who are likely to have long and successful careers. Coming out of college, Mahomes played in a very unconventional college offense, and there was doubt in many corners that his game would translate to the NFL. He never lined up under center. Watson was a leader for his Clemson team, but was seen more as a running QB than an NFL QB. His arm strength is somewhat lacking and he had an unconventional delivery. I thought both of them were worth taking in the first round. KC was wise in retrospect, but they also had far fewer holes on their team when they traded up with Buffalo to get him. I'm not even sure Mahomes would have had the same success coming to Buffalo that he's had this year in KC. In Buffalo there would have been pressure to start right away and he would not have had nearly the supporting cast he has in KC. KC was able to give him a full year on the bench to learn a pretty complex offensive system. -
I personally don't think McBeane targeted a high draft pick. I do think they wanted to pick up a couple key pieces to their team. Those turned out to be Josh Allen and Tremaine Edmunds. Beyond that I think Beane made a decision that this was the year they were going to eat their dead cap money. That definitely limited what they could do with respect to team building. They probably realized it could be difficult to have a lot of wins this year, but McDermott is not coaching to lose IMO.

Absolutely agree. I'm disappointed that things haven't worked out better this season, but I don't think that it changes the long term outlook. The only point about which there is some debate is whether or not Josh Allen really is a franchise QB. We can't know for certain. If it turns out he's not, then there is some question whether the patience of the fan base and ownership would hold out long enough to give McBeane another crack at finding their franchise guy. I figure we'll cross that bridge later if we have to. For now, I'm hopeful Allen can be the guy.
