How 'bout they work with what they've got instead of signing every FA vet that's out there. OL seems to be the only place I'd want to bring someone in if JJ goes. Odds are that a #1 receiver isn't going to play in the slot. Or that a #2 QB who had a part in bumping out a young starter is going to make the Bills situation better. Much as we'd like, they can't sign 53 Pro Bowlers. It's gonna be another long offseason of 'Hey, why don't we sign Brady, Manning AND Culpepper for QB. That way, we're all set!'

Liked the backstory of Walt and his father.... Nice at the end where they bonded a little bit when Walt finally saw that he'd gotten letters all along and the guy did care. :I starred in Brokeback Mountain: Brian, not that this kind of thing doesn't happen lots.... Speaks lots about Walt's dad (don't remember his name) that he at least covered and made himself look like the bad guy instead of saying that Walt wasn't wanted by Brian. Walt's mother's attitude just had me PO'ed. She's the mother, so she can take the kid wherever. Bye. I don't need you anymore, loser construction worker. So what was it that was revealed that was more than ever? The polar bear? We've seen it before. Maybe it was the line from Brian that "things have always happened" when Walt was around. Dead bird when he was reading the bird book, polar bears when he was reading the comic (The Flash --- I actually used to read that when I was a kid).... That's odd about Claire. Her belly was the first thing I noticed that it was her a split second before her face showed. Was she responding to the dog whistle? It's getting more like "Lord of the Flies" with this group that's emerging around Locke and Boone. Walt and his dad now seem to be included. Splitting into one group that hunts and kills, another that relies on intelligence (Jack's doctoring, Sayid trying to figure out the maps).

(OT) Saw "Ancorman" this weekend
UConn James replied to envirojeff's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
"Hey everybody! Come see how good I look!!" Maybe you have to be in media to really get it. Kind of the way "Office Space" was so funny b/c it was so real. -
What constitutes an "Emergecny Appeal"?
UConn James replied to OnTheRocks's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I believe it is $50M in private contributions. They're sticking D.C. with about $20M in security costs that are going to come out of their Homeland Sec. funds. So a few hundred people can do the macarena in ten-gallon hats. This is almost as good a buy as the RVs the Texas HS office bought exclusively to haul around demolition-derby lawn mowers. Hey guys, how's 'bout inspecting a few more cargo containers? Whatever. -
So now that everyone's talking about Social Security, does that mean the mess in Iraq is "cooling off"? Don't even think TD won't remember how Drew couldn't get it done against Pitt's scrubs. MM has shown his willingness to make a switch in the rotation to a young guy who's hungry for an opportunity. Likely didn't start JP to let him heal thoroughly. Open competition in camp.

I know a guy who took a digger at five stories while at a party in one of the dorms. Faulty railing, I gather. Coma for 10 weeks. He was a real * in high school. Football/baseball/academic slacker. He was going to play for the U as a walkon. He now has the mental capacity of a 6-year-old. I've seen him at the library and at a BBall court in town, and it's weird trying to reconcile the new person in the same body.

Which would be the biggest "choke"
UConn James replied to Like A Mofo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm sorry, ladies and gents, but I have to say it was our beloved Bills. Since when is being "decisive underdogs" an acceptable excuse for losing the game of games? Does Vegas decide the results? And especially with our O and D at the time that should have showed up much better than they did. It's a cop-out. I'm also a BoSox fan (more in the past three years when finally getting back into it from the strike years), and before this year, I'd have to admit it about them too. It hurts, yeah, but it's true. -
Dan Pompei has the juice? Sorry, I just had to. The link doesn't go to a specific story. Who'd you really have in mind? If he declared, I was thinking about Leon Washington out of FSU. Seems to have a complementary breakaway style to Willis, but also the power style of a Henry-type back. Shaud Williams showed something this year. He should get a shot. I don't care that he's a smallish back. That means nothing. Oh wait, it does mean something, a lower center of gravity and makes him tougher for LBs to get leverage on and tougher to tackle. Zeroue is locked up in Pitt, and already has a lot of miles on him. It's a rare RB that can last even more than 5 seasons.

How's 'bout Antowan Smith? Won a Super Bowl the year after he was dumped....

OT: real college essay...this takes balls
UConn James replied to Ramius's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There was nothing in there that couldn't be written by the average 10-year-old with access to a textbook from which to base it. I'm a copy editor by trade and a well-earned 3.9 GPA. I know tone and writing for the affect. I fail to see the genius. Gotta watch out for us racist liberals, yaknow. That admission is quite apparent. -

Everybody knows you can't cut and paste any statement that you find in a freshman history/philosophy/etc. text or online. </sarcasm> I'm going out on a limb, I know, but that limb is the size of most tree trunks. Thanks for calling me a racist, BTW. Because we can't have an honest discussion about what effect the diversity-at-all-costs® rather than getting there on MERIT is having on schools i.e. the dumbing-down of America. Imagine a teacher having to spend 5 semester hours a year out of 45 simply replying "HUH?" and furrowing his or her brow when a vocal idiot spews this stuff in class. I've seen it. If you're going to college there should be a reasonable expectation of knowledge so every serious student's time isn't wasted. Black, white, Asian, Martian, administrators let in way too many mental midgets. Even in the name schools. Why don't you call up The Cos' and call him a racist too. -

UConn James replied to Ramius's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ladies and gents, I give you the by-product of diversity-at-all-costs on the college campuses of America. Let's accept a borderline retard just because he's black and we can push the male minority student percentages up. Nevermind that this is slowly turning higher academics into a joke as standards decline. Why can't Emeka Okafor be the role model of choice? That guy is just awesome. Maybe more people should listen to Bill Cosby than castigating him for speaking the truth. -
(OT) Why doesn't my wife wear stuff like this?

Two questions: 1. What the hell is with the guy in the beret at the top of the picture? 2. Shouldn't the blonde in front come with kneepads? It does say the trainees are "eager to please"....

History has its day: Iraq and Vietnam
UConn James replied to a topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
My uncle was in Vietnam for three days when Tet started. Stationed on the northernmost hill in South Vietnam, 1/2 mile from the DMZ. Flipped through all of the grainy old pictures. ("There's the tree line for the DMZ".... "This was Charles. Not Chuck. Charles. He was very particular about that. I called him Chuck every chance I got. He got a letter one day, we didn't know what it was, he read it, went around behind the tank we sitting in the shade of and blew his brains out. We had to pick off gray matter from our uniforms."). The radio transmission on the day of Tet was, "SEVEN NVA DIVISIONS HEADING TO YOUR 20. DI-DI-MAO, MF'ER!!!" (For reference, there were three divisions in the entire Marine Corps at the time). 100 percent disability. He says, "I sure as sh-- wouldn't want to be there [iraq]." -

[OT] Will some gun owners never learn?
UConn James replied to LabattBlue's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Or at least get a gun lock. They give these out FREE in the lobbies of police departments. You just walk right in, look around or ask, and take some. They won't even arrest you for it. Idiots like this who give responsible gun owners a bad name, and give gun-grabbers (from both parties now...) a talking point. -
Another interesting link. A tangent at the end on the Butt-Smack Rule :
