  1. Editing a little bit, which I'll do below, a pattern emerges. I don't consider Nixon's an unsuccessful presidency. Got the country out of Vietnam, established communication w/ China that otherwise might have gone in a much worse direction than it has been, among other things. That said, he was a certified scumbag if you've heard some of the recorded conversations, and, of course, you know about Watergate.... I would consider Johnson to be of about average-to-good character who gets smeared by conspiracy nuts and people listen and say "Maybe so" as if the ramblings have a solid basis. He had some good moments but they were overshadowed by his micromanagement in Vietnam caused many of the problems. That he abdicated the Presidency in '68 was proof positive he was unsuccessful even in his own mind. (Tangentially, the funniest thing I've found in my textbook readings was that he was once asked by a reporter why wars happen. He unzips his pants, points, and says, "This!") As for G.W. Bush, it's doubtful that he's of "bad" character. I do believe that, overarchingly, he wants the good things to happen and this is more and more taking on the look of desiring the unacheivable and biting off much more than we can chew. This is exampled by his inaugural speech. But your assertion that being a dumb-ass and organizational structure resembling NASA in the spaceshuttle Challenger days ties into the character issue is wrong. That goes into the measure of success. His style of negotiation with people whose opinions differ is to not negotiate at all. Many senators on both sides have attested to this. I wouldn't be so quick to put his egg in the successful basket just yet.... The pattern that emerges is that presidents of "bad" character are successful in terms of getting things done and the results they get. The presidents of "good" character have mostly failed at producing effectual results. Another one of those headscratchers in a world that makes less and less sense with each passing day. But that has been the story of human history. Effective rulers usually turn out to be azzholes.
  2. They already have that. It's called the AHL. Only it's not in Buffalo.... Watch some college hockey. It's a lot better competition than the pros. Is the Frozen Four in Buffalo again this year? I forget.
  3. Not unlike what is happening currently. Douglass wouldn't be shocked, and I think he'd tinker along just fine being civil and intelligent hisownself. In exactly what era of human history did we have civility and reason? The test is if its practitioners outnumbered or outgunned the baseness of the rest of society.
  4. I wasn't making this up. It's not team-by-team, it's league-wide. NFL Rule Changes and Clarifications The disconnect b/w their reasoning to disallow tinted visors and then disallowing players from taking off their helmets is laughable.
  5. This is hardly the most "pseudo-vulgar" thing that's graced over the TBD bricks. Nary an hour ago on the main board: Let me guess, you're one of those people who blushes when they say "erection" on those Cialis ads? How dare I speak about systemic problems in our churches when it's clearly the Islamics who we're forming the posse over in this thread, b/c their systemic failure is the only one we're going to point out, nevermind that there's three fingers pointing back at us. How many Hail Marys and Our Fathers have I racked up so far?
  6. He could just tell everybody in the building, "You're fired!" and then smoke 'em if he's got 'em.
  7. Here's a better article. Even has an equation! (He's British, by the by, and did this on his own accord).
  8. I'm not averse to amassing two or three second- or third-round picks by trading Henry and your JJ scenario. Why pay first-round money for, what any other year, would be second-round talent? Only reason why I might want to get a first would be if Nugent's stock goes up and other teams start drooling over him.
  9. Back to why this thread was started: A funny strip summarizing the first 3-4 pages perfectly.
  10. At least his father was demn funny in his struggles with some really badly-put-together teams. Q: Coach, what do you think about the execution of your offense? A: I'M IN FAVOR OF IT!
  11. I'll have to watch the How'd They Do That.... I was watching the game and it slipped my mind even with the reminders.
  12. Right. Well, if the pedophelia epidemic isn't enough for you, try reading "Hitler's Pope" and then pretend that the same structure isn't there. Never mind the library of other monstrocities the leadership has endorsed or swept under the rug. The largest landowning entity in the WORLD, and they can't afford a settlement that will provide pysch. care to their victims? It is disgusting. It is also true. But don't bother yourself with that detail. Sorry, you can get back to talking about whippings, stonings, beheadings and the like.
  13. Roethlisberger will find out just how rare this kind of season was. Some guys go their whole careers and never make it to the playoffs. Buh-bye!
  14. In this most desperate of enterprises, they were pouring ice water on his thumb near the end of the half. Never say never....
  15. I think the Bills can do better than this. In fact, they have better guys than George on the roster right now. Let go of the Name, and realize there's a reason why he got next to zero PT in Dallas.
  16. How about a Catholic that makes a boy suck on his penis, and the leadership's refusal to accept any semblance of resonsibility for shuffling pedophiles below the radar of police involvement and directly leading to that boy's suicide 20 years later? Implicit here is that no religion is peaceful. It establishes a group of believers who form a looooooong list of grievances in their text. They can then feel morally superior when they have run-ins with the Other.
  17. I was talking about non-stutterers who stutter-sing, by drawing out a syllable and breaking their voice in between short segments for 20 seconds. If what you say is true, why couldn't Ken sing out 'Cathcart Towers Hotel' in "A Fish Called Wanda"?
  18. I think it was something that a player had to actually get an Rx to be allowed to wear a tinted visor. Like if they get headaches from bright sun or somesuch. IIRC, it was instituted so fans could see/"connect" with the players. Even tho they introduced a penalty if a player takes his helmet off on the field.... Then again, this is the NFL we're discussing, where a fumble is a fumble. Unless it's not.
  19. Mmm. Why are people so impressed with stutter-singing? And the land of the <awkward pause> Braay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-a-a--ay-ay-ay-a-a-a-ave. Started with Whitney Houston in the '91 Super Bowl and now they all sing in a way that calls attention to themselves rather than the lyric. Moved into regular music too. I hate it. Carry the note ala Jeff Buckley or cut it off. No offense to the girl, she's just mimicing all the others who have nice voices but have no connection with what they're singing.
  20. Make-a-Wish? I don't see what the complaining is about. If it were Alicia Keys singing that badly and you were paying her to do so, you'd have bitching rights, but this sounds like another one of our sorry-ass little First World problems.
