OT: this guy has been in college
UConn James replied to tornado681's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My dad knows a guy who, last he knew about 10 years ago, had been in college for over 30 years. Name is Roland Houle. His father, a doctor, told him as long as he was in college, he'd pay for it. So, he became a professional student. Unbelievable. -

For states that have passed the legislation making it legal to refuse, the only application of the "conscientious objector pharmacist" that ultimately will be economically viable is a mom-and-pop pharmacy, and those are a dying breed anyway. I'm sure large and small chains will draft policies requiring that someone will be there to fill the scrip at all times. You can't cut off half of your market because of politics and boycotts and expect to be in business for long. Either that, or doctors and hospitals stock it and cut out the middleman. It's very stupid not to stock morning-after pills. To point out, they're used for a number of treatments. Such as for a woman who had suffered a miscarriage. Cramping. Menopause symptoms. Certain types of cancer. Look it up. -
Some inside tidbits from One Bills Drive
UConn James replied to Live&DieBillsFootball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That was tossed in like it actually means something. Yeah, NC is a great CB, and TD should ante up to keep him; I'm not arguing about that. But this is a team where Troy Vincent was the first safety to get an interception for the first time in about three years in the Browns game. Which just gives further proof that losing Clements would be devastating to the secondary. -

Dress like a college student when you're going on a flight. Sandals, sweatpants/windpants, T-Shirt. Then change clothes when you get to your destination. Saves a lot of hassle. And, a fire extinguisher is a pretty useful odd-job weapon. That stuff is cold, jars you for a few seconds, nevermind if you get it in your face. And they're marked out for easy access. If you put enough thought into it, anything can be a weapon. -

Not such a good day for analogies, huh? Even tho my mention of a phone was to show how a prescription was received for the simple fact that people actually do still use paper prescriptions, rather than the phone physically giving a patient RU-486, etc. But whatever. WingNut needed to get to class.... Good points. Pharmacists legally can't tell you what brand of cough medicine is good, unless you ask them to recommend one, but they can reverse a doctor's course of treatment. If you don't want to do the job, the whole job, and nothing but the job, then find another line of work. -
To be clear, "Bernard Cardinal Law" has neither been accused of or charged w/ molestation or sexual assault. He has been accused of knowingly shuffling now-convicted pedophile priests around the country from the Pervert's Paradise that is the Boston Archdiosece. The only reason he hasn't been charged is b/c the state can't subpoena church records (in the off chance they weren't used to make the dots on Ash Wednesday) just like a priest can't be forced to testify about a confession. Is that better or worse?

I don't think I could keep a straight face if Willis says "I do everything in my BVDs!" to counter MJ's Hanes ads.

I guess it's also the contractor's decision to use mortar between the bricks or not. Or to make his workers wear hard-hats or not (even tho in the time I was in the trade, it was with objects where the helmet was wearing you for protection). Shouldn't be surprised when his/her license is revoked tho. I've never had a prescription telephoned into a pharmacy. Saying everyone uses the phone is like saying everyone uses the Laserdisc. And the issue here is that the pharm took the written prescription and refused to return it. If moral/religious concsience excludes a pharm. from doing their job, then the employer should be able to ask that in the job application. Sure, you can believe what you want, but just like the freedom to jump off the roof and fly, there are consequences to freedom of speech. For stores like CVS, Rite-Aid, etc. the pharmacist does not own the store. And additionally, he or she works as a pharm at the liscensure of the state who oversee that customers are served equally across the state rather than the rogue pharmacists who are dictators behind the Sudafed aisle; same principle as common law. This is the law whether you call it "communist" or not. -
(OT) LOST Article in EW this week

The Buffalo/WNY accent is near impossible to nail down unless you're from the area. It's not like there's one definitive WNY accent, like the Joisey pinched-nose one. Mix among Polish, Italian, spattering of Dutch.... They've done a lot of finagling of the cast from what it was originally going to be. Charlie was going to be an over-the-hill rock star, Jack was going to be killed off in the pilot.... It's worked for the best. Just saw that the EW cover & article is actually in issue #815. And to clear up, there are no "new" eps until 4 May. There's a refresher special that has the flashbacks played in order on 27 April. -

And when the pharmacist refuses to give back the prescription? B/c those are the most recent marching orders and why these cases are coming up. They know if if they can delay for 72 hours, their beliefs are foisted onto others, yippeeeeee! If they can't stand "doing harm" they should seek another profession. Health care of the body human is all about robbing Peter to pay Paul. See: chemotherapy as only the most obvious example. Houston Chronicle op-ed. -
That's just a weird construction. Might be interesting to find out why they have it like that. Is it a Northeast thing? or U.S.? They don't write 'Jaime Cardinal Sin' here.... And might I just comment, you can't make this stuff up.

I didn't write that JPII facilitated abuse; the paragraph was about Law. Go back and read again. That said, sorry, but anything less than the pope ordering that Law and the pertinent records be turned over to the authorities doesn't cast a good light on JPII. And however you describe it, the fact that Law took a fast plane to Vatican City, is still seen (in NE especially) that he was invited into the pope's city to be protected from the public outcry and possible prosecution. (Again, look through history and you'll see many a case where a leader who was exalted for doing something great in one area especially, also did (or in this case, failed to do) something not-so-great in that same area. Some people call it ironic when these things happen. I don't know what I call it, but it's definitely not a peachy-keen ).

(OT) LOST Article in EW this week

Utilitarian ethics at its finest, don't you know.... I don't think that theory is right. Locke isn't a good guy, but he's probably not ultimately going to be as bad a guy as a lot of people are thinking he is (including me). Actually, the show is written week to week. And sometimes, day to day. When it was the hit it's turned out to be, I think Abrams' previous bible for the show turned into Genesis. It was originally designed for one season, and now JJA is talking six. The preview on TV said Wednesday. So I would assume that means this Wednesday. Altho the episode guide on TvTome said no new eps 'til May. So I can't make heads or tails of it. -

UConn James replied to CosmicBills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Uhmm, mayhaps you can put it in yellow font? Please and thank you. And for the record, the preview says very clearly that the radio transmission Boone got back was "We're the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815." Sounds like Rose may not have been full o' sh--, but how did she know? It also shows Locke making a contortion as if he's been shot but there's no discernable wound that I can see.... -
Yes, he was a cardinal before the most recent scandal broke. Channel 5 out of Boston would always refer to him as "Bernard Cardinal Law." Always sounded weird to me as a copy editor. I have no idea why that order was used for him b/c every other cardinal I've read about is called "Cardinal X Y." Whatever.... O'Malley, who replaced him, is a Bishop, I think. "A kick upstairs"? Call it what you want. Law did not resign; he was transfered. People 'round here saw it as a promotion b/c he was sent to the Vatican, closer to the pope. Read that he is to lead a homily for the pope this week, too. Regardless, he's still high up in the leadership. It's utterly disgusting that this guy isn't rotting in a jail or had the Mafia do the same Chinese Finger treatment they do for diddlers b/c he is just as guilty, if not more since he facilitated it. The fact that JPII didn't take a much stronger stand, especially by making an example of the facilitators like Law, is a stain on the legacy of a pope that himself truly cared about children. Corp, I don't know why you're so "glad [you're] not a member" of the CC. The statistics aren't much different for other kinds of churches. You just don't hear about it, b/c many go unreported (and in this regard I think the Protestant churches are actually higher than CC, simply b/c victims are uncomfortable being the first to say anything and have the media clusterf--k their lives).

Best Buy has man arrested for paying with $2 bills

Good thing he didn't use $3 bills.... Idiot cashier. And what's scary but too true, an idiot cop. Lovely invocation of 9/11, there. F--ktards. -
Anyone got plans for Mexico Bowl I?
UConn James replied to Corp000085's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The First Amendment doesn't extend to the Ralph and other NFL stadia. I hope there are too many Ron Mexico signs for them to censor. Not that anyone in 10-Minute Memory America will remember what that refers to. -
Patriotism includes shutting up at times
UConn James replied to AKC's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Ahh, yes. The Sound of Silence. It's so great for when your half is in office. I think it was Dante who wrote that the hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who in a time of crisis remain neutral and say nothing. Word to the wise, it's not people who say the war was the wrong choice that's dragging enlistment down. Kids who are serious about it will not be deterred by a protestor. And if they are, I doubt they'd make it thru boot camp. There's a war on and young people don't exactly want to be fighting a war b/c of "WMD intent" and whatever the next excuse will be for going in to Syria, Iran, etc. Yes, lies have reverberation. There's a reason why there was little military recruiting advertising in the NCAA Tournament this year after it's long been heavy on it b/c so many enlistment-age people watch it. It's not worth the expenditure b/c w/ the war, whoever's serious will enlist and those who aren't, won't. If declining enlistment rates were such a threat, that should have been considered. I write this as my brother's quasi-fiance is going to be dropping her son off for the weekend as she and my bro have drill. -
It's not about keeping a 3-year-old from eating cookies. It's about developing a life-long commitment to make rational decisions about a diet. The whole 'personal responsibility' thing is great in theory and less effective when parents have to work two FT jobs to have a roof over them. How is this different from the NRA creating the Eddie Eagle program to influence young kids to not play with guns (Stop. Don't touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult.)? There's no problem with a media program reinforcing a good habit. Doesn't mean it'll work, but kerist, what's the uproar?
-
Hey, I didn't say anything about a wand....
-
Dorenbos? He's a magician. As in hat, cards and doves.

Well, now that they're busy teaching kids to eat a more healthy diet, at least they won't have time to promote that whole 'tolerance of other people' schpiel that was deemed so dangerous by the Dept. of Education.
