Yes, he was a cardinal before the most recent scandal broke. Channel 5 out of Boston would always refer to him as "Bernard Cardinal Law." Always sounded weird to me as a copy editor. I have no idea why that order was used for him b/c every other cardinal I've read about is called "Cardinal X Y." Whatever.... O'Malley, who replaced him, is a Bishop, I think. "A kick upstairs"? Call it what you want. Law did not resign; he was transfered. People 'round here saw it as a promotion b/c he was sent to the Vatican, closer to the pope. Read that he is to lead a homily for the pope this week, too. Regardless, he's still high up in the leadership. It's utterly disgusting that this guy isn't rotting in a jail or had the Mafia do the same Chinese Finger treatment they do for diddlers b/c he is just as guilty, if not more since he facilitated it. The fact that JPII didn't take a much stronger stand, especially by making an example of the facilitators like Law, is a stain on the legacy of a pope that himself truly cared about children. Corp, I don't know why you're so "glad [you're] not a member" of the CC. The statistics aren't much different for other kinds of churches. You just don't hear about it, b/c many go unreported (and in this regard I think the Protestant churches are actually higher than CC, simply b/c victims are uncomfortable being the first to say anything and have the media clusterf--k their lives).

Best Buy has man arrested for paying with $2 bills
UConn James replied to Fezmid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good thing he didn't use $3 bills.... Idiot cashier. And what's scary but too true, an idiot cop. Lovely invocation of 9/11, there. F--ktards. -
Anyone got plans for Mexico Bowl I?
UConn James replied to Corp000085's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The First Amendment doesn't extend to the Ralph and other NFL stadia. I hope there are too many Ron Mexico signs for them to censor. Not that anyone in 10-Minute Memory America will remember what that refers to. -
Patriotism includes shutting up at times

Ahh, yes. The Sound of Silence. It's so great for when your half is in office. I think it was Dante who wrote that the hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who in a time of crisis remain neutral and say nothing. Word to the wise, it's not people who say the war was the wrong choice that's dragging enlistment down. Kids who are serious about it will not be deterred by a protestor. And if they are, I doubt they'd make it thru boot camp. There's a war on and young people don't exactly want to be fighting a war b/c of "WMD intent" and whatever the next excuse will be for going in to Syria, Iran, etc. Yes, lies have reverberation. There's a reason why there was little military recruiting advertising in the NCAA Tournament this year after it's long been heavy on it b/c so many enlistment-age people watch it. It's not worth the expenditure b/c w/ the war, whoever's serious will enlist and those who aren't, won't. If declining enlistment rates were such a threat, that should have been considered. I write this as my brother's quasi-fiance is going to be dropping her son off for the weekend as she and my bro have drill. -
It's not about keeping a 3-year-old from eating cookies. It's about developing a life-long commitment to make rational decisions about a diet. The whole 'personal responsibility' thing is great in theory and less effective when parents have to work two FT jobs to have a roof over them. How is this different from the NRA creating the Eddie Eagle program to influence young kids to not play with guns (Stop. Don't touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult.)? There's no problem with a media program reinforcing a good habit. Doesn't mean it'll work, but kerist, what's the uproar?

Hey, I didn't say anything about a wand....
-
Dorenbos? He's a magician. As in hat, cards and doves.
-
Well, now that they're busy teaching kids to eat a more healthy diet, at least they won't have time to promote that whole 'tolerance of other people' schpiel that was deemed so dangerous by the Dept. of Education.

Try "Woman in Sea Hawaii" by Herb Ritts. I'd use an X-acto and frame and matte the picture so it doesn't have that cheap poster look, tho. Imagining how the front looks is half the enjoyment. I love B&W photography. Amazing how taking something out adds so much. But, I'd implore you to branch out. There's some great works here... Botanical Metamorphics. These were in the library back when I was at UConn, about 5'x3' and they were blown up from photo contact paper. I was taking botany and nutrition classes at the time and it really changes the staid way you look at nature. Really cool stuff, but quite expensive. I like the 'Sugar Peas' the most. On Edit --- whoops, didn't see your size spec. I don't know how much you're going to find that size that aren't dirty pictures....

I don't think it's established that Sara died after the wedding. For all we know, she is a presumed "widow" and that's why there's been no Jack&Kate. I don't think that's the case, tho. Probably a divorce, b/c he didn't really seem to be in love with her for her, but rather for her as the patient that he needs to take care of and watch over. Much like, in a non-manly-love way, he did for Boone last night. There was a fatherly/brotherly love there in how much Jack was sacrificing and agonizing. For the original accident, tho, that's an interesting theory, one that I'm not discounting. Everyone on the island had a connection before getting on that plane.

Ehh... My experience didn't result in venison in the freezer, and my family is like Swiss Family Robinson in that regard. I don't know how roadkill tastes or what it does to the meat. Anybody ever uhh, salvage a deer?
-
I hit a deer a while back (literally came out of nowhere, one bound right to the middle of the road) but it only did some damage to the grill, radiator and the lights, which are ironically the most expensive single part on a car outside of the engine. Didn't report it to insurance b/c it was mostly cosmetic and not worth higher premiums. If it's extensive damage, you probably should report it. I'd suggest you call your father and break it to him right away (and say a few times, "The important thing is no one was hurt" so he can see the big picture if he's easily thralled by such occurances). Don't wait until he gets home if there's any way you can reach him; learning bad news over the phone is much easier than walking up the drive and seeing a totaled car. Not being informed right away pisses people off, especially fathers. You can ask what steps to take and describe the damage, etc. and see what to do. I'm not sure if you have to have a police report in this circumstance. Waiting won't help, tho. Call your dad and see what the protocol is.

Yeah. I thought there would be more cutting b/w the two contrasting emotions of joy about the baby and Shannon's grief about Boone. I don't know if it makes Shannon want to get herself to a nunnery tho. Looks like Sayid will be taking on a revenge role probably both to earn Shannon's love and for the greater good of the community in a posse. They've really used music well in this series. The preview shows that the key to the Halliburton was taken and I would think either Locke gets a pistol (he has one from the missionary's body --- but I have to say it was surprisingly rust-free for a gun that's been out in the elements for 2-10 years....) or Sayid raids it. My guess in who apparently shoots Locke would be Rousseau making a surprise appearance with her rifle, for reason that she sees Locke is "sick." I think the island just goes through the ranks. That she's managed to avoid it kind of excuses her craziness.

The was for A) the person who wrote the article I read where there were new shows on and 2) for the network leaving such a gap now that the story is really drawing you in. Wasn't meant for you. Prol'y. They aren't so bad. I think this aired a couple of weeks ago in Australia and that region. Nothing big came out of it, other than some troublemakers on boards saying it was more than it was.

Crap. I was thinking of Stevenson. Haggan's been a ghost.

I had read it was going to be new eps. Per TvTome: Some kind of Special on 27 April 22. The Greater Good (a.k.a. Sides) -- Sayid ep, on 4 May 23. Born to Run -- Kate ep, on 11 May 24. Exodus (1) -- 18 May 25. Exodus (2) -- 25 May 26. Exodus (3) -- 25 May As for the previews, they don't show any more than Abrams wants you to see for whatever reason. Then, there was the preview that showed Shannon getting picked up by the monster....

I think the only reason it may have been a letdown was that last week had so much happen, e.g. the light. And it wasn't revealed this week. I don't think it was Sara who died on the table. It would have been a lot bigger and more dramatic argument in the ep that had it. Ian Sommer-something.... I think he's on "Smallville" but I don't think that's much of an issue. He signed a contract to be there as long as he was needed, sounds like a blind contract based on how the writers keep a close release on the scripts. And Boone will still be appearing in flashbacks. I think it's all new eps until the season finale. Three eps, then a two-part season finale, the last of which I hear will be 90 minutes and no commercials.

"Do No Harm" in this case, wasn't exactly how everyone thinks of that phrase. The criticism of Jack was that he was so committed he couldn't let go. Instead of taking drastic, futile efforts, he did step back after doing everything he could. He seemed ready to give all of his blood before Sun ripped the needle out. I think the title of the ep has more to do w/ the final minute of tonight's ep. From the preview of next week, looks like Jack and Sayid are going to taketh life away, b/c Locke did harm. "I'm going after John Locke!" (Anyone notice that Boone's shirt last week had the number 48, as shown upside down)? So, Jack married the Julie Bowen character (Sara?)? I take it this was before his father operated drunk, etc. And his father, at the pool, did seem to be trying to steer him toward not getting married. My opinion on Jin changed a little for the positive tonight. And Sawyer.

If I remember correctly, Crowell is primarily a MLB. I think Haggan was the OLB depth before he was released/not re-signed. I think TD tries for some OLB depth in the later rounds or in UDFAs.

Clinton didn't exactly bend over backwards for the environment. And he's a DINO who picks and chooses his politics from the worst parts of both parties. Can you say NAFTA, which was pushed thru by him and the Republicans, which has since sold our country down the river? Canadian forests clearcut to build houses in America, American forests clearcut to build houses in Mexico. Nevermind the macroeconomic noose it is in its other effects. -
On the "Pro-Life/Pro-Choice" debate
UConn James replied to Adam's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
In the news that several states have passed laws to allow a pharmacist to refuse to fill a prescription for morning-after pills (as long as they give info to a pharmacy where they can be bought --- tho some of them are fighting this stipulation too), brought attention by a woman who suffered a miscarriage and doctors had to prescribe them for some reason. Several other states are considering laws that would require a pharmacist to fill a prescription regardless of his/her individual beliefs. They're licensed by a state to serve citizens of all beliefs. If they won't do the job, they should be de-certified. Just to posit a theory here, but does that mean I can refuse to sell firewood to a pharmacist who does this and say "Freeze to death"? (Well, yes, I know I can do this). Or can doctors at a hospital refuse surgery for someone who shot themselves or slashed their wrist b/c they believe suicide is morally wrong? -

The oil industry has so many politicians in their pockets they walk with a limp. And to be fair, it includes both sides. But is slanted toward the right. The really sad thing, tho, (and I suggest you read an article that was in Field and Stream several months ago) is that Bush didn't even need to be bought. -
Then, there's Cardinal Sin from the Philippines. You can't make this stuff up, folks.

The preview has been playing a lot the past couple of days.... Spoilers in yellow: Read some things a few weeks ago that the episode where Claire has the baby will be the one where a major character dies, in a circle-of-life theme. Original spoiler said it was more poignant b/c it would be "a boy who dies." Didn't consider Boone a boy, but it certainly does look that way. It's going to be a Jack-centric ep. He's already saved Charlie.... I think there needs to be a loss just to balance it into believability b/c he can't save everyone. And the more I think about Locke as being this group's Ethan, the more I'm convinced of it. I've had a bad feeling about him from the start. Terry O'Rourke was a great choice to play Locke. I predict he gets banished before the end of the season.
