[Entertainment] LOST discussion thread
UConn James replied to duey's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So Locke = Hassam? The unwilling/unsure participant? I don't know about that. The island picked Locke for a reason --- b/c he has hatred that's long been smoldering. He called the kidney donor scar a "war wound" and I got the sense it wasn't metaphor. He doesn't want to leave the island that is his survivalist paradise. And he knows what will happen when he leaves or when the island is done with him -- no more legs. He's shown he'll kill and lie to prevent rescue. To me, that makes him the evil character. -

Same here. That scene had me . I think the look may have been more a reaction to the callousness/grossness of Locke wringing out Boone's blood from his shirt. I think people are giving Walt too much credit for his "abilities." As Brian said, and the bird and polar bear scenes showed, "Things happen when he's around." Which is a far different thing from Walt or his conscious actually making those specific things happen. I get a reading more like, trouble follows him around. Just a question for the person who said Sayid's backstory paralelled the island.... How? In one he is more or less forced by the CIA to befriend the enemy, Hassam, and the guy shot himself; on the island, Shannon forces him (in a Honey-Do list way) to befriend the suspected enemy (Locke) and Sayid ends up having to tackle Shannon (and as stated later, that blew his chances w/ her). At best, the ep was incomplete in tying the story together. And I think it's more apparent than ever that Locke is evil. -

Anyone find it weird how Shannon sounds so petulant/nonchalant when she asks Sayid to off Locke? And I mean her tone of voice more than the words. "He killed my brother, can you do something about that?" -
Milloy or Moulds Replica Jersey... $29.99!
UConn James replied to stevestojan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Usually when there's discounts of this sort, the guy isn't on the team the next year. -
A few places are reporting discrepancies in the Closed Captioning, as you mentioned before. This clip seemed to clear any question of what was said in response. Sounds like you don't believe it, which is entirely w/in rights. I choose to take it as the given, esp. w/ some other info on future casting. Another thing to note from Deux en Machina: The shard of metal that went about 4 inches deep into Locke's leg doesn't seem to affect him any. He pricks his foot, puts them close to the fire.... Nothing. No pain. That's another reason why I think Locke may be "Unbreakable" (thanks to the island) and why the preview that's showing him get shot is moot for surprise, b/c he's not going to die.

Norwegian Court Convicts First Woman for Rape
UConn James replied to Sound_n_Fury's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Or the girl looking like Mama Cass. Or a case of "Dude's a lady!!!!" / "She's a man, baby!!" -
TD and MM taking full advantage of the rules change. Imagine that! And I've always wondered: What color do Smurfs turn when they hold their breath?

I've heard that's only good insofar as it makes vomit aftertaste taste like banana.

Why is the media being blamed for following a story that is newsworthy? Or should all stories about (possible) abduction be censored? Shoot the messenger, I guess. The woman faked her abduction! She cut her own hair off at the scene to somehow (a weird somehow, mind you) make people think she was kidnapped. She didn't just take off for a few days. Vera Wang wedding dress: $5,000. Fiskers Scissors: $2. Setting off a nationwide manhunt, employing local, state and federal agencies all just so you don't have to see the look on your fiance's face when you tell him you're 'Just Not That Into Him,' and getting off Scot free b/c you're a pretty, wide-eyed suburban white girl: Priceless.

He changed his facemask and went to the more open Jim Kelly-style mask. Used to have the one with three vertical bars and a slim field of view piece that's usually worn by FBs or power RBs. I tried one once and it really segments your view. You know it's the offseason when this seems to be the biggest news of the week....

Kinda got that feeling from the first, and the Georgia-to-New Mexico trek in three days was a little weird (doesn't it take like 5 days to drive that? And that's if you're not trying to fly under the radar). Guess that she saw all the media picking up on the story and figured she couldn't escape it. Classic passive-aggressive woman. It's amazing the lengths chicks go to like this. Can't just tell fiance to his face that she doesn't want to marry him. The sh-- of it is that if she weren't found, the husband would've had a reputation just slightly better than OJ or Peterson. How much tax-payer-funded manpower was spent on this crap? She should be charged with something, and it won't be nearly enough.

Did 'Locks For Love' go rogue or something? Great news.

The "U" brings no shortage of confidence
UConn James replied to zow2's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hey, all I know is that when they walked on the court at Gampel, they sure didn't have the air of cockiness. More like deer in the headlights. As for the two football games, they could've gone home at halftime and still beat us. -
No, she's been Lost. I've seen in some short TVGuide-like previews that she makes an appearance before or in the finale. Not necessarily foreboding, as a lot of people are thinking the worst of Locke (not w/o reason). 'Not being what he seems' would suggest that he's not evil. I keep flashing on Walt's comic book where Green Lantern and Flash attack the benevolent alien. I don't know.... <shrug>

Who would you like as Buffalo's #3 QB?
UConn James replied to BillsFanForever19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Department of Corrections: Matt Rodgers is 'white.' Selected in '92 out of Iowa. Wore #7. I still have a B&W photo from the RD&C in my archives. There is no biological basis for race. It is entirely sociological. -

President Bush's Performance Tonight
UConn James replied to Chilly's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
And just like the debates, he shrugged off any notion that he's done anything wrong in fomenting the current level of partisanship. You're by far not the only one, Mr. President, but you're not virgin snow in this. Then there was: "Ten years ago, if we'd have had an energy strategy, we would be able to diversify away from foreign dependence." Basically passing the buck to the Clinton admin. You want to know why there was no effective energy policy 10 years ago? B/c Republicans at the time were busy trying to dismantle the Dept. of Energy. And hey, you get what you give. What we've got for ideas from him is the ANWR wet dream. How about nuclear power --> hydrogen economy? Instead, he has to pander to the clean coal, biodiesel, ethanol special interests (again, he's not the only one, but he's the highest profile one, who sets the course for the country) rather than technology that already exists and works. -
The previews from before the ep where Boone died clearly said "No, we're the survivors...." There was probably enough unintended confusion that the producers decided to redub the audio. I wouldn't exactly trust CC. From that, I'd say there's definately another (probably much smaller) group of survivors, that includes Rose's husband. There's new eps each week all the way through the finale. Something I noted from the repeats. Locke's sister died from a broken neck (his golden retreiver story). Boone's nanny died from a broken neck, and Locke was clairvoyant to this. The summary episode for Lost was not as well done as the one for Desperate Housewives. Then again, DH only had 4 main characters to deal with. But it tied things together a lot better instead of jumping around so much.

I don't care, just as long as it dies a quick death. A lot of younger people who identify themselves as 'Dems' in the new generation hate SS, and not b/c they can't think ahead (I think on the whole they get really underestimated that way). It's just that while they're social Dems such that people can make their own choices for their own lives, they're fiscally conservative and realize that SS as it stands makes no economic sense. When I think what the Democratic Party will be in 20 years, when that way of thinking changes it from the inside....

AlGore ran w/ the "SS Lockbox" back in 2000. Criticize him if you want, but he saw the problem and wanted to address it back then. Probably pi--ed off a lot of his fellow Senators who liked to raid it. Would it have worked? Not by itself. Was it genuine? Who knows. But I don't think waking America up to the fact that their money was being stolen by the politicians was a bad thing. I'm w/ you on this one. Why have the gov't take my money so they can repay it to me in 40 years? Wanna know how much they make on interest in a day off of all that money in the macro? I don't really foresee living to retirement age. And basically, the gov't doesn't want you to live past retirement. Better to keep it in our pockets and if they need the money so badly, they can try their best ( ) to justify raising taxes. Keeping it as a silent tax is wrong, nevermind getting taxed on those earnings twice.

Talking heads on the Cable News programs.
UConn James replied to OnTheRocks's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The theory behind the filibuster according to the founding fathers, was that one party that had simple majority power would not be able to control the whole shebang and thereby persecute the minority. It also prevents a tennis match situation where when one party has control and sets X rule, then when the other party gets a majority, they set it at Z. Cuts to the chase and they meet at Y, in theory. If the Repubs do get what they're looking for, do you think they'll shut up and take it when the pendulum swings the other way. Because what goes around comes around. Some things will not be settled like this tho, abortion and civil rights among them. There is one judgment for them. By and large, they only roll forward, not back. When Republicans got back in power in the '80s, they couldn't (overtly) re-enforce segregation.
