Lieberman is real trouble
UConn James replied to UConn James's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Not that I remember seeing; I think candidates have to be, or it's an unwritten rule that they be in the party. There's a line for Greens in the state elections, most of the time with just 2 candidates. Lowell Weicker actually won the governorship back in.... 1990?.... under the "A Connecticut Party" he created. -

No, I'm pretty sure that if Lamont wins the Dem nomination, Lieberman cannot also run as a Dem. Some of the Letters to the Editor in the Hartford Courant have suggested the 'Connecticut Sour Grapes Party.' The seniority argument didn't work for Tom Daschle (granted... different circumstances) and I don't think it has much influence in this state, to be blunt. Of course, he'll certainly pull it out of his bag of tricks. The differences w/in the party and indeed the electorate come at some of the major, major levels. -
C'mon! An oil filter will last much longer than 4 days.

Like, "Mr. President, what is your favorite color?" But yeah, that's a tough one. Ask Sir Gallahad. -
Pentagon brass: Iraq civil war is possible: Violence ‘is probably as bad as I have seen it,’ general testifies More and more, I find no comfort in the BS weasel words these people are selling. Could? I believe? Probably? Let's cut to the chase. Our boys are caught in the middle of a lead-up to a 'civil' war. I was willing to give the Pres. leeway when this started, but when even my brother --- a Raven who's shot in and out of that sh--hole half a dozen times --- says we should get the hell out of there, that's the sign things are unravelling quickly.

Lieberman is real trouble

One question that hasn't been brought up in the state's coverage.... If Lieberman loses the primary but wins in the general as an Independent, does he have to (or, would) he stay an independent for the duration of his term, or could he pull a Jeffords and then switch back to Democrat? Also, one wonders how all of this is putting pressure on him. As Kelly said upthread, Joe seems to be a more principaled pol than to do a 180 change, but I don't think some tweaking is out of the question. The silence of his fellow Dems previously in his corner, e.g. Harry Reid, et al. has been loud. He's had Bill Clinton (DLC) shilling for him in the latest ad pleading that Joe is "a good Democrat." He burns a big bridge on the unquestioning nature of his war stance. -
Like a career-ending helmet shot to the knee, perhaps?

(I knew that, just exercising my summa cum laude degree in Smart-Ass.) Why are you calling her a "cold fish"? I've only ever seen her bake, grill or poach.

Lieberman is real trouble

I'm not saying he should lie. Just that he shouldn't expect/demand that he be elected as if it's his seat for life. B/c in the primary ads that run here, that's how he comes across. Along the margins, it's live with the party, die with the party. Joe is saying one thing and doing the opposite. -
I've been called worse.

People do respect honesty and integrity. But that doesn't mean they need to vote for it when they fundamentally don't agree with where said honesty and integrity was applied in their names. --- Ken, I heard the Lieberman camp was collecting signatures a few weeks ago. Let's hypothesize for a moment. The Dems pick up either 6 or 5 seats in the Senate, making it 51-49 or 50-50, with the caveat of Lieberman returning as an Independent. Senate control would then still reside with the Republicans. How can Joe be a 'Lifelong Democrat' when he puts his party in peril (just as he did in '00 by running the double bill, which would have left our crook of an ex-governor to appoint a replacement)? -
Kind of bush (league)? Kirwan needs to go back to Newswriting 101. When you report, you can't be a fan.

Uhmm.... 1) B/c we're not occupying Turkey, Syria or Iran. 2) B/c T, S & I have governments that can apparently handle law enforcement and relatively better police their country such as to prevent internal ethnic warfare.

Outgoing British ambassador warns of Iraq civil war, eventual (geographic) separation along ethnic lines in leaked report It does parrot something I thought since the start of the invasion. Iraq really should have been separated into 3-4 different provinces or maybe even different countries to just seperate these people from each other. Instead, FREEDOM decided they wanted to create a diverse, multi-ethnic and-all-that-happy-horsesh-- society, despite the argument that it's difficult to have freedom and its trappings when there's bombs blowing up all over b/c the people hate each other.

A Quinnipiac Poll just released this morning has primary challenger Ned Lamont leading Lieberman by 54 percent vs. 41 percent among likely Dem primary voters, with 85 percent of those polled responding that their selection is set. Even with a +- consideration.... it doesn't look so good for Joe. Important to note, tho, that there were rumblings from the Lieberman camp last month that he will run on an independent ticket. Past polls have reported that were Lieberman to do so, he'd win in a theoretical three-way race (due to Republican-Lite crossover appeal). All this despite him also saying that he has been and will be a 'lifelong Democrat.' There've been many calls for him to step aside if he loses in the primary. I am not advocating one or the other (tho, I'm not averse to some good-old-fashioned housecleaning and representatives actually representing the people of the state even if it's not my viewpoint b/c that's how democracy works), nor can I vote in the primary as I'm unaffiliated. Just wondering what you all think this means for the national situation, the Dem party, the nationalization of local races (a big issue here with lots of out-of-state 'meddling' -- bloggers, contributions, etc.).

True enough. It is a democracy and it is authoritarian. It is secular and fundamentalist. It is a success and it is a failure. Like playing around with the tuning on a microscope, your impression depends on what layer you're looking at.

Which went on in Rwanda for about 10 years, and is going on in Sudan.... and the world pretty much whistled and looked the other way. I guess the whole "Never Again" thing became "Sometimes Again" somewhere in there.

Exxon-Mobil profits Jump 36%
UConn James replied to cromagnum's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I'd merge them. Then I'd proceed to cut the unreduced links to what is pertinent, rather than a laundry list of youtube stuff. Then I'd put a ceiling on the number of emoticons cro can use in a single post. .... Failing an automatic shutoff Breathalyzer on the keyboard. -
No sh--. Those things are featureless. Especially when SEVEN other teams use red/black/white as dominant colors in their palatte, those just faded into obscurity/the mainstream, even more than the goat head jerseys did. For everyone unhappy with the rumored/leaked design, go to/watch the games but don't buy any merchandise and the problem will likely be solved in short order.

Disowning Conservative Politics Is...
UConn James replied to EC-Bills's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
He makes a lot of points that hit right to the heart of things. Which is probably why some people took offense; it often hurts to be forced to re-examine your core beliefs on the premise they might be wrong --- easier to put your nose toward the sky and shop among the churches. I, for one, am concerned with the level churches participate in bald-face politics and actually telling the congregation how they should vote. (Drove by my former church (the new pastor was one who sends wandering, redundancy-ridden 8-page letters to parishoners re: satan, co-habitation, abortion, whatever the issue of the day is in an attempt to be relevant) the other day and they'd actually added "Conservative" to the big sign.) Whatever the stripe, organizations that wade chest-deep in politics should not be tax-exempt.
