  1. NYT: Arizona Suspect's Online Trail Offers Hints of Alienation Once again, Bishop, you've just proven yourself to be a complete sh---for-brains.
  2. I think they're something of a blending of the extreme far-left who are anti-business/globalism and the extreme-far-right who are anti-government. If you think of the political spectrum as a circle, I kind of picture them hovering near both 0* and 180*.
  3. There's also a program called LastPass that stores your passwords and can do automatic log-in. But I'm sure govt could do half as good a job at 18,000,000 times the cost.
  4. True enough. Like I wrote, an interpretation of each particular work of his favorites book list is not my point... it's more about the complete mish-mash and competing ideologies. I would imagine the suspect's head is every bit as mish-mashed. There's loose wires everywhere. I would hazard to say that this wasn't particularly religious or left-right political in nature. There's some spouting on his site about a new (global?) currency, which has the hallmarks of anarchism. You know, we could go around and around everything, but at the end of the day, it was one person who inflicted injuries and death on innocents. Sometimes there isn't a set-in-stone 'Why.' At its heart, it was simply an act of hatred.
  5. [partly copied from my post on the OTW forum] [The suspect's] reading list / favorite texts is just a complete mish-mash in a 'Fifteen of these things are not like the others, fifteen of these things do not belong' --- Mein Kampf, The Communist Manifesto, among others --- which might be an indication of what his head is. It just speaks to me of a very directionless person whose only real direction was acting on Hate. It's being said the suspect is virulently anti-bible/religion, his videos also feature stuff about a new (global?) currency, etc. Very weird. If I had to guess, I don't think we're talking about right or left here; he has all the hallmarks of an anarchist who hates any kind of organized society. It's beyond stupid to link this lone wolf to a political designation. It would seem he didn't exactly believe in the political/democratic process. Count on Bishop to hit below the belt every time. If this were a Republican politician shot by a minority, vouchsafe that these conclusions wouldn't be thrown out so fast by him and several other posters here. Why don't we wait until we know something? That said, I am very uncomfortable when politicians/parties/media use that kind of language during election seasons. It was completely inappropriate before this, and one would hope these dumb catch phrases get rooted out.
  6. It is a work that emphasizes an Us/Them polemic. It may be rather broad in its stroke and may not call for violent overthrow (or maybe it does... never read it), but you can't deny that many have used it to justify horrific acts. Murder of Nicholas II and the Bolshevik Revolution, Stalin's reign, Castro/Che. Not saying that Communism is inherently hateful, and anyway, that's not the point here. His reading list / favorite texts is just a complete mish-mash in a 'Fifteen of these things are not like the others, fifteen of these things do not belong'... which might be an indication of what his head is. 7. It has nothing to do with politics. It has everything to do with hate. The suspect's favorite books are listed as Mein Kampf and The Communist Manifesto among others that one struggles to fit together into any single ideology besides Hate. Even in partisan politics, the goal is to defeat at the ballot box, not to gun the opposition down on a street corner. This only goes to show that , even for federal judges and U.S. Representatives, personal security is self-help and no amount of police presence will fully stop someone who's hell-bent.
  8. NPR is reporting that she and 6 others were killed. Wow. Link
  9. UConn had some of the same things for some of the men's basketball recruiters. This day and age, I just don't see the point of limited- or no-contact rules. And bear in mind that oftentimes, "LOL" is a text message itself. The rules are antiquated. Most communication is not formal anymore. You don't want to see recruits inundated by prospective colleges/coaches. But if they initiate communication and want to know more about a program and how they'd fit in, what's the big deal?
  10. "No Strings Attached" might not be three-quarters bad.... Along with "The Other Woman" coming out later this year (and to my eyes, might get her two Oscar nods in a row) and "Black Swan," Natalie Portman is starting to come into her own as an actress.
  11. It's just a testament that as you get up into those numbers, probablity/fate dictates that you're going to have a game where your gals are off and theirs are on. It was a great run. Now all the talk about it can stop and they can focus on winning the championship.
  12. Whoops, I was going by the sub-head pictures. Just noticed there's 11 there, so it's including Jobs and the iPad that is the cover photo, along with #1 being the iPad.
  13. I think her next one ought to be Gategate.
  14. Did this person not notice that s/he listed the iPad twice? Or was the #1 tech gadget of the year actually Steve Jobs? And in that case, only Mrs. Jobs owns him.
  15. "The Shawshank Redemption," "Stand By Me" (King's "Different Seasons" novella collection iirc is going to be 4 for 4 in movie development. Not bad.) and "The Green Mile" were all superb. It takes a director who's good at adaptation, and they got one if it is Ron Howard. He did a great job with the Robert Langdon movies and "The Grinch...."
  16. George Michael of "The Sports Machine" fame died last year.
  17. UPDATE: Deal Reached on 9/11 Health Bill
  18. Josh Groban - O Holy Night. Garth Brooks - "The Gift" is a recent favorite. Not a fan of GB, but it works well with a twinge of countrification.
  19. And persecuting prosecuting gays/lesbians doesn't cost money and time? Nevermind this getting rid of a sizable loophole that some people use to duck out of their service contracts. I know someone who got a meteorology degree on the AF dime, said he was gay, and now he's on TV making good coin. All that training costs money, too, and it's lost if/when someone does take this cop-out. No more excuses once that service agreement is signed. I rolled my eyes about the 40 days thing, too. But it doesn't have to take years to phase most of this in.
  20. Military will write the rules on repeal of gay ban
  21. UPDATE: WP: Senate Votes to Repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Heading to the Resolute Desk for signature. And the sun will rise the day after.
  22. Holy sh--! Did she have one built!?!? Thirty large for a half a day's rental!!? Just to be clear here, that's more than millions of Americans' take-home for a year. In Can't Understand Normal Thinking -ese... "Well, that's different!!"
  23. Doesn't matter a whit that he's not an elite safety. There is a team out there who will give him insane money in FA, by justifying that DW played in a bad defensive system. And hey, looking at Jim Leonhard, they may be right. Doesn't make Whitner worth all that scratch when someone else can come in without too steep a decline. Invest in the line and the front 7. Putting your heavy investmest into DBs is a losing strategy.
  24. I have a few close relatives, including a brother, who've dated/married a woman with a kid/kids, including one who was ~ 3 at the time and is now 9. Set down one ground rule early. Bear in mind that the scope of this broadens as your relationship with the mother deepens.... In matters of reasonable parental discipline, if she ever comes out with a line similar to, "Don't tell my son what to do!" her or your things will be packed up on the porch, ready to go, within an hour. If she doesn't respect your ability to guide a child under your roof, then get out. Those words were IN EVERY CASE the onset of bad tidings, including nasty divorce in all but one case. When a child learns that when you tell them to do something they don't like, all s/he has to do is run to mommy, then YOU become virtually powerless over your own life.
  25. On over-the-air broadcast, I was sayin'. Still, my heart is a few sizes larger wrt the network execs than it was a few days ago. Might pick up PE on Blu-ray....
