    Here's one to offer.

After going 0-16 in 2008, the Lions drafted Matthew Stafford first overall. That team had zero talent on it. They had Kevin Smith as running back, and Calvin Johnson to throw to. Defensively, Louis Delmas was about the best they had.

Stafford and co. slowly turned the Lions around, going 2-14, then 6-10, then 10-6 in 2011. Recently, they've gotten even better. With some better coaching, they could easily succeed the Packers and take on the Vikings.

Perhaps I wasn't clear in my original request.  I'm seeing posters saying that the Bills should make a bold move to go all the way up to #1 or #2 for a QB because that's what the Eagles and Rams did.  My question, again, is can anyone convince me that the Bills roster, as it stands today, is as strong as the Eagles and Rams rosters were in early 2016, to justify them moving up from 21 to either #1 or #2 to take a QB?

How about Carson Wentz in Philly?

I am begging for someone to convince me that the current Bills roster is just as good, or possibly even better, as the Eagles and Rams rosters were when they moved up for Goff and Wentz, that would justify the Bills making a similar move to #1 or #3 for a QB.

    I'll be waiting.

Why are you against having a franchise QB? The Rams weren't against it when they went all out for Goff

The Rams also had these guys on their roster at the time they made that trade: Robert Quinn, Aaron Donald, Alec Ogletree, Todd Gurley, Greg Robinson, Rodger Saffold.

So, much like the Eagles, the Rams ALREADY HAD A STRONG ROSTER IN PLACE, meaning that they could afford to make a bold move to go up and take Goff.

I feel that Austin was misused just about his whole time with the Rams.

He spent much of his career in Jeff Fisher offenses, so that tells you a lot, as well.

To me, he should be used pretty much strictly on jet sweep actions, returns, and screens. See: Tyreek Hill.

He is not, never has been, and never WILL be a true WR. If you treat him as such and use him as I just mentioned instead, I think he can be productive for your offense.

When he was eligible for the 2013 Draft, I remember posters on the old Bills Message Board pounding the table and screaming for the Bills to take him with the 8th pick.  One poster went so far as to say: "Take Tavon Austin at 8 and then trade back into the 1st for EJ Manuel."

I think there is a good chance LJ winds up in Arizona if he doesn't come off the board before. My ranking of the QB prospects in this class=

    1) Josh Rosen

    2) Lamar Jackson

    3)Baker/Sam (flip a coin)

    4) Josh Allen.

They are all first round worthy, and that's where I think they go.

How does Lamar Jackson compare to, say, Ryan Mallett when he declared?

But Beane also said on John Murphy Show that he was looking for a QB.  It made me think it's a long shot that they would draft Jackson unless he somehow falls.  Keep in mind there were many critics about DeShawn Watson a year ago too

AGAIN with the Deshaun Watson crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. John Murphy: Bills at their own 30 yard line.  Lamar Jackson in the shotgun (because that's all he knows) with 3 receivers split wide.  Here's the snap.  Pressure coming right away up the middle! Lamar Jackson rolls out, he's going to take off! Jackson is at the 35, the 40, looking to get out of bounds and OH! Lamar Jackson got hit low by the safety and he is down and clutching at his knee.  This is not looking good for the 21st overall pick right now.

So there's no chance that any FA of any worth would ever come here?

That's clearly not true.  It's never been true.  What's the purpose in stating literal falsehoods that add nothing to the discussion?

If you were a top free agent at your position, and you wanted a ring, would YOU want to come here?  Or, would you rather go to New England, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, LA Rams or Minnesota?

    Yeah and we have

    Cordy Glenn, Dawkins (OT)

    A pretty darn good TE

A beast pass rusher in Hughes

    Matt Milano is a stud

Jordan Mathews is ours if we want him.....and we do have Kelvin Benjamin

I think we are in just as good a position to take that dive.......but lets say for a second that our talent didnt match the eagles.....We managed to make the playoffs this last year with far less talent......have money to spend on free agents this year and will have a TON to spend this next offseason.

If you have a franchise QB.....all of a sudden these other positions become far less important because you find new ways to win.

    Yes

A pretty darn good TE - A TE who seems to be injured all the time and is NOWHERE NEAR the talent level of Ertz
A beast pass rusher in Hughes - When he's not being double-teamed, which he was for the majority of last season
Matt Milano is a stud - How do you know this?  He could be the next Keith Ellison for all we know.

You're right, we do have Kelvin Benjamin...a Kelvin Benjamin with a litany of knee issues.

There will be other ways we can fill those positions. There is a gamble every year in the draft. Its almost like a game of poker. And people will decide if we won or lost the draft on April 29th. Of course it will take several years to really decide that. You are assuming that if we traded all that, we would automatically be set up for failure, and essentially waste Josh Rosen's career, like the Sabres are wasting Eichel's. Dan Marino was picked at 27 in 1983. Maybe the Generational talent we want will be there at 21 or 22. We don't know, but all we can do is go with our gut. I'm sorry, but even when we drafted EJ Manual in the first round, we were all very excited to see how he would do. If we draft any Quarterback in the first round this year, its going to be exciting. I'm not going to allow myself to sit there on April 26th pissed because of what you said. This Quarterback we get, will be with us for 4 years at a minimum, and we aren't trading every single 1st and 2nd round pick from those 4 years. The Eagles traded a lot to get Carson Wentz, and they were able to win the super bowl even after he got injured. I thought according to your logic, the Eagles would have tons of holes throughout the rest of the team, after losing other draft picks. The rams still made the playoffs, after trading a lot to get Jared Goff. They were both in the playoffs in those Quarterbacks 2nd year. There are also tons of examples where it doesn't work. Lets watch and find out what happens.

The Eagles didn't have major holes throughout their roster when they traded up for Wentz.  They had the following players on their roster when that trade was made: Jason Peters (LT), Lane Johnson (RT), Zach Ertz (TE), Fletcher Cox (DT), Brandon Graham (DE), Jordan Hicks (LB), Jordan Matthews (WR, when healthy, was productive), Nelson Agholor (WR).  The point?  They had pieces in place and could AFFORD to move up to the 2nd pick for Wentz

The Rams were in a similar situation as the Eagles when they traded up for Goff.  Their problem was that Jeff Fisher had no idea what he was doing and McVay and Wade Phillips actually DO KNOW what they're doing.

    ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Say they trade up for Rosen by giving the Giants (or Colts) both 2018 1sts and a 2019 1st and 2nd.  As the season progresses, it becomes clear that Dawkins is not a franchise LT, as Rosen just keeps taking hit after hit after hit.  Beane and McDermott know they have to get a franchise LT to protect their franchise QB.  But, guess what?  YOU DON'T HAVE A 1ST ROUND PICK IN 2019 TO USE ON A FRANCHISE LT, NOR DO YOU HAVE A 2019 2ND ROUND PICK!

But, you'll probably come back to this with "dude, they still have two 2nd round picks that they can use on an offensive tackle that could take over for Dawkins at LT."  The problem with that though, is the top LT prospect in this class is Mike McGlinchey, who's projected to go in the 1st.  Every other prospect is considered to be a better fit for guard or RT.

Moreover, this team STILL has a crying need at WR and, if Preston Brown walks and Kyle's future is uncertain, and they can't sign a top LB or DT (ex. Star Lotulelei) in free agency, now you have two more major holes that need to be filled and could be filled with those two 2nd round picks.

Not to worry though.  I'm sure this fanbase will be more than content to give away the store for Rosen and use those two 2nd round picks on the 3rd best WR available and a guard/RT prospect and go into training camp with a 3rd round LBer and Jerel Worthy and Adolphus Washington as your starting DTs.

    Actually that sounds pretty favorable.

New England? Brady has to slow sometime. What's the atmosphere there going to be next season?

    Minnesota? Who is their QB?

Green Bay? Shut Rodgers down last time we played him.

Lions? On the road? Not scared.

Bears? An improved Bears team still not very good.

And if Houston, Tennessee and Jacksonville are potentially losses...that means they are potential wins as well. Spinning things is fun!

New England - doesn't matter what the atmosphere is like.  as long as Brady is the QB, it's a loss.
Minnesota - if it's Cousins, combined with that defense, it's a loss.
Green Bay - Rodgers was shut down because we had a dominant defensive line that included a motivated Mario Williams and Marcel Dareus.  That game was also won, because Rodgers missed a wide open Jordy Nelson on what would have been a guaranteed 70+ yard TD pass.
Lions - it's a home game and whoever starts at left tackle will have to deal with Ziggy Ansah on the edge.  Stafford will also be throwing all over the field to Golden Tate and Marvin Jones - both of them might have career games.
Bears - Trubisky will be more experienced and they still an improving defense

So you already know the standings for the next 2 seasons with a rookie QB? How about we could possibly go 11-5 or 12-4 with a viable QB? It can be spun in any direction we prefer.

Um, for one thing, we still play in the same division as the Patriots and their QB is this guy named Tom Brady.  We're also playing the NFC North next season, that includes games AT Minneapolis and AT Green Bay (2 guaranteed losses) and home games against improved Lions and Bears teams.  We're also playing the AFC South, with 3 potential losses against Houston, Tennessee and Jacksonville.
