Today is a great day...and I want to thank the Bills organization and by extension the fans for helping to bring it all about with that trade last season. From a KC perspective....We have a very ready Mahomes, and we get out from under Smith, get cap space, a thrid round pick AND...this is the important part....Fuller, a corner who would absolutely go in the first round of this years draft, under his PALTRY rookie contract for two more years. That is BETTER than actually getting a first round pick....you know he isn't a bust already and he's pennies on the dollar cheap for a high end corner that would cost MILLIONS on the open market. ....I am going to use a very tasteless term to describe what happend today....but KC plunger raped the Redskins. It would seem at least the Redskins have looked at this QB class and said "no thanks" The Browns made the phone call to KC...that doesn't mean they weren't going to draft a guy, but it tells you that whoever they are going to take, they don't think will start day 1. That isn't usually the case when you invest the 1/1 in a QB. The Bills are going to go through the Kirk Cousins bidding war, and trying to convert the 21st and 22nd overall pics, OR going with Tyrod and Peterman, OR signing someone like Bradford when all you had to do was use the 10th overall pick you had last year and avoid all this uncertainty. You had Mahomes and Watson right there, under the tree with shiny wrapping paper and nice big bow...and you punted.

I don't think you will be seeing Luck traded, for all the reasons mentioned already....I think everyone will be surprised when Alex Smith ends up with the Colts. If you are the Colts and you are waiting to see if Luck can or can't come back, are you really going to use that 3rd overall draft pick on a franchise QB? Are you going run Jacoby Brissett back out there and try and sell tickets? (yes McDaniels knows him) ....they could trade for Smith and his one year of control. That buys them time to evaluate Luck, or for Luck to get another surgery etc. If Luck is finished, you could then sign Smith to an extension....it would be his team (something smith wants) and you are ok at QB for 4-5 years and can spend all of that time finding the next one. Or, if Luck comes back and he's ready to go, you thank Smith for his time and trouble, he becomes a free agent and probably finds himself very much in demand still. Indy could then trade out of 3 this year, load up on picks and go forward. As a Chiefs fan, It is entertaining reading all the different view points about what to do at QB for the Bills....lots of opinions. My opinion is that you were in position at 10 last year and missed on Mahomes. (and maybe Watson) In my biased opinion, you could have taken Mahomes (or maybe Watson) at 10 last year instead of trading out. Now you'll have to expend serious draft capital to move up to 3 or 4 to do essentially the same thing a year later......and you have to hope that whoever you take, is someone they think more highly of than they thought of Mahomes or Watson last year. I'm not saying it won't work out etc...but seems like quite a bit more involved and risky trying to move up now as opposed to staying in place last season. I honestly hope you get something good and I'll be rooting for you and watching intently on draft day.

Just a Chiefs fan throwing in my 2cents. I beleive Alex Smith will be starting for the Colts in 2018. They don't know yet if Luck is going to recover, play, be good, be ready...etc...You can't commit to drafting a QB at 3 if you already have Luck, but you can't come back and sell tickets if you have to keep waiting to find out and you throw Jacoby Brissett out there again. (although McDaniels at least has worked with him before) ....you could trade for Smith. You get him and his one year under contract at 20 million. He plays, you compete, and that 20 million buys you a year to find out A) If Luck can or can't come back, and B) if Smith is your mid to long term starter, and you sign him to an extension. Just my thoughts.

No, we could keep Alex...he's under contract for 18.....we wouldn't trade him because everyone has seen enough to see what we have.....a QB, who when drafted had an incredible skill set and a brain....who needed some coaching on his crappy footwork...and who has taken well to that coaching and considered by many to be on the path to superstardom. That is why we wouldn't make that deal. Denver would gladly part with Paxton Lynch for that. I'd bet the Bears would send Trubisky to Cleveland right now for just the 4.

If the Browns offered us (the Cheifs) the 1 and the 4 for Pat Mahomes today, the Chiefs would not make that deal.

There are some opinions here that are going to look really bad by week 4 next year.

Just some help for those of you that haven't quite grasped why Alex Smith is available. 1. KC is in cap hell this offseason. 2. KC has a low dollar, ready to go replacement (who the fans also want) and that they invested resources in to grab at #10 last year, as you all well know. These are the 2 obvious reasons..the third reason is that Alex Smith understands, and is very good at being safe with a football. NFL passer ratings heavily reward you for throwing a two yard completion into the flat on 3rd and 8 instead of being intercepted trying to make the throw that gets you a first down. Nothing wrong with protecting the football. The problem is that Smith is not a good Red Zone QB, and he is not a good 4th quarter QB...and if you watch Smith play, he abondons way too many good pockets often making nothing out of something (yes, you read that right) There aren't stats for how Smith is "too safe". He is a very good player...but certainly not great....he DOES NOT elevate the talent on your roster....you must put really good folks around him in order for his safe and efficient play to be of value. There you go.

Smith as a seat warmer is expensive. Smith as your three or 4 year starter makes more sense considering the money involved and the compensation (won't be a first.)

KC Fan here....I don't think the Bills are a very likely destination for Smith UNLESS you plan to have him be the man and sign him to an extension. It also isn't going to take a first (whoever suggested the Bills give us(KC) back our #1 for him, I love you.) .....Smith is good enough to be some teams long term starter for a some more years....he isn't going to want to be a bridge and since he has one year left, he has leverage to leave if he doesn't get a good vibe about his long term prospects. Smiths market is going to depend on several factors....1st, the QB market will start to fall into place once Cousins lands. At that point it will be about what teams think Smith is more than a bridge. Washington, Jacksonville, Arizona, maybe Denver, and the Colts if Luck's status is uncertain. Teams like Cleveland, the Jets...I think poeple just assume Smith fits those places because they suck and Smith is pretty good....For teams needing just a bridge to the young guy they draft....Smith isn't cost effective...you can get a McCown or a Glennon or a ....Tyrod..... to be that guy a lot cheaper. Market is heavy with those. Of course draft day strategy comes into this...Cleveland, Jets...probalby drafting someone and doing the veteran bridge...again, not what you need Smith for. Smiths market in a trade varies widely depending on how many bidders there are and if they are wanting Smith Long term..he is worth a lot more as a long term answer than as a bridge....we'll see.

you need to watch this again...the SAM isn't even close as Tyreek Hill is passing by a flat footed safety...at this point Alex should be setting and stepping into one as he has a ton of space and time....Smith seeing the SAM who is 7 or 8 yards away, leaves a HUGE pocket and that's it. Ruined a play that should have gone for a long TD. I don't have video of every time he does this...you'd have to watch all the games and be looking for it..but it happens alot...and you CAN NOT see this on a stat sheet.

You have summed it up right here. Smith is only a good QB, because he does this too often. His pocket presence is garbage. Brady "wins" this play 19/20 times. Smith loses this play at least 9 out of 10.

Teddy, I think you have your years mixed up....After beating the Saints, the niners lost he following week to the Giants in a close game. The NEXT SEASON Smith got a concussion and lost his job to Kaepernick about week 8 or so...the Kaepernick led 49ers lost to the Ravens in the Super bowl. Smith was traded to KC that offseason for 2 2nd round draft picks.

Again...not trying to tell you he' awful....this pass IS the pinaccle of his career.

Two years ago, the Cheifs didn't have a WR catch a TD pass for the entire season. Granted we didn't have any particulary good WR, but that's hard to do in a leauge set up to encouarage passing. ....Now, also understand we have had Tyreek Hill for two seasons. Hill makes Smith look pretty good in that in the past when Smith has attempted to go downfield, he almost always overthrew the target....putting the ball where either the WR will get it or no one will...and no one usually did....Hill is damn near impossible to overthrow..incredible speed. Smith's been able to hit him on some long throws because he is open downfield. Otherwise, Smith/Andy Reid love the WR bubble screen....run that play several times a game...most of the WR completions are that play or otherwise very short stuff.

Of course we have problems more than Alex. We have Alex and lost at home to the Titans after leading by 18 at halftime. Our defense is pretty slow and old at key places, not to mention our cap issues causing a lack of decent roster depth. That said...we have plenty enough talent to go farther if not limited at the QB spot. Wanting to move on from Smith to Mahomes isn't the same as choosing to go back to being 2-14 again....Smith only gets you so far...for the reasons I have explained above. He isn't a bad player..his quite good..but that's it...good. See the videos I posted here...this is TYPICAL. You can win a lot of games with Smith at QB...he just isn't quite equal to big moments and you can tell he plays with his main priority being not to make a mistake....it's a detriment for a player with his talent...because again...as I said, when he actually stays in a pocket, makes a read..sets and throws..Smith has NFL talent...he can and does throw a beautiful NFL pass. The problem is that he bails if you so much as fart in his direction when he's back there...he's got to have a spacious pocket that he can stand in and see all the rushers to his front. He will be a WONDERFUL bridge player for whoever gets him....I am just telling you fine Bills fans, that is all he is. He is missing the pocket pressence that would put him up there with a Brees, brady, etc.

....for those of you wondering why you'd give up assets for Smith, then pay him....that's what I'd be asking also. No reason to trade for and pay Smith...there will be other "bridge" QB's available, or just keep Tyrod and he can be the bridge if that works for you.

Like I said...he'd be a great fit there...you'd be happy to have him....he'd be an upgrade over what you have...all I am saying is to temper your expectations. He was the right guy at the right time for us...the Chiefs were in shambles when we got him...he served his purpose. It is worth adding, that if Mahomes hadn't shone like he has so far, this wouldn't be a topic....you can do alot worse at QB than Alex Smith.

Smith will be available and for a team like Buffalo, he'd be a good bridge to whoever your next franchise QB is. Let me tell you now, he isn't more than that. You will look at his sparkling stat sheet and see that he throws for a high completion percentage, doesn't turn the ball over, and this season, his YPA was pretty good as he did go downfield more than his career numbers would suggest. He's tough, smart and a good locker room and community guy. You'd think by all this he is everything you could want in a QB...and for the Bills or the Browns, Jags...he CAN do what he did for us...and that is bring stability and good play to the quarterback position. DO NOT think you are getting a guy who elevates the roster around him and makes a key play when it matters most. He isn't that guy. The thing about Smith that doesn't show up on the stat sheet, and you don't see it just watching a game unless you are looking for it, is that Smith will make "nothing out of something" several times a game and especially at crucial moments. His pocket presence is awful. Let me explain this. When Smith takes a snap, stays in the pocket, does his reads, sets and throughs...he can throw a beautiful NFL pass...even downfield. The problem is, Smith often will take a snap and with the slightest bit of percieved pocket getting a little tight...takes off and runs...and not aiming to throw, just to run. He misses guys breaking open all the time because of this. It doesn't go down as an interception, it doesn't go down as a sack. It doesn't go down as an incomplete pass. It looks like a two yard run on the stat sheet and keeps his other numbers from looking bad. A fan just watching the game will get the impression that Smith is "improvising" or "buying time" when actually he has abandoned a perfectly good NFL pocket and taken a good play and made it into something completely unproductive. He does this at various points of a football game, but the more crucial the situation, the worse his tendency to do this becomes. Here is an example of what I am talking about. He does this all the time. You won't see Brady or Brees etc do this...they "win" in the pocket. This alone is why Alex Smith is good and not great. Just understand that is what you'd be getting...good but not great...a stablizing player at QB, but not a guy who elevates the talent around him. We've seen enough of Mahomes the beleive the kid is a rare talent and looking forward to that era here. If you get Smith, you'll be happy for a while. He will get you to the next franchise QB..but he IS NOT a franchise QB.

You are right about that...but it doesn't change that even a blind man can see the incredible talent, special arm, and abiltiy to make plays only a rare few can. You won't read an account of the performance anywhere that is less than sparkling. Or, don't take mine or anyone elses word for it...go watch it. See for yourself.

....anyone see Mahomes play today....? if you can, take a look. Be glad you finally made the post season.....enjoy that moment, but when you get a chance to watch Mahomes and see what you passed over......knashing of teeth and weeping is in your future Bills fans. Um...first Congratulation from a Kansas City fan. Glad to see you all back in the postseason. Good luck vs Jax. Second...I know you all are Bills fans and lead busy lives, but if you happen to have a chance to watch Mahomes from today in a rebroadcast of the game on NFL network or something, you might cry seeing what you passed up.

Thought I'd take a break from the meltdown in Kansas City and check in on things over here. First, KC is coming off a bad loss to the Giants. It wasn't a fluke. KC has serious problems. We have no pass rush to speak of. Our O-line is small and can't get a push. For a finese line it also isn't a very good pass blocking line, and even when it makes a decent pocket, Alex Smith is too nervouseto stay in a pocket long enough to find the open man...once he rolls out, as long as he is contained, he is no threat to do anything....plus the game plan has reverted back to lots and lots of dink dink dink dink dink. Anyhow...you guys are catching us (KC) at a time when we can be had. Speculation Ried has lost the locker room. About your QB situation.....If you weren't/aren't a super bowl caliber team with TT, then you needed to find out what you had in Peterman. The problem is, you should already know what you have. 5th Round picks amount to jack squat about 99.9% of the time. Unless Peterman was just blowing it away in practice, the coaching staff should have known that Peterman is what he is. Cleveland keeps picking in the top 5 due in no small part to their complete refusal to draft a QB. They passed on Goff, Wentz, Trubisky, Mahomes, and Deshawn Watson in the past two drafts by choice. ANY of those would be better than what they have. KC had done it for decades until our trade up last year with you all to get Mahomes. We still don't know how that will turn out, but we are looking forward to seeing him soon...and the fan base was still 50/50 split on it even when we were 5-0.
