    You could even reduce the preseason to 1 game, not sure there is anything to be gained in playing 2 games.

    I agree that 18 is the optimum number. It's also easier from a scheduling POV: - 6 in-division games - 8 games v 2 NFC divisions (play the same 2 divisions every 2nd year) - 4 games v 1 AFC division (play the same division every 3rd year) 10 AFC games + 8 NFC games every year. Would obviously be the opposite for NFC teams.
