  1. everyone, esp. the OP recognizes that there is an cost - an extra roster spot. coaches can always do a cost benefit analysis and usually decide the cost is greater than the benefit. the OP’s post made me rethink and update my priors on the benefit. the fact that McD released Hauschka this year after a cost benefit analysis does not negate the point that there was a benefit that made McD consider it esp. this year.
  2. that “smacking around” was the best outcome for the Bills. rested most starters. outcome did not change Bills playoff qualification but cost the jets several draft spots. but that is logic which is hard for the new jersey jets fans to grasp.
  3. looks like you misunderstood what i wrote - nowhere do i say bills SHOULD go with 2 kickers. i only say it can work in SOME games (not every game). all i am doing is applauding a real creative thought that no one on this board suggested before (to my knowledge) and one even McD appears to think has merit.
  4. felt we shd have kept him here longer - injury insurance and some team may have been happy to give us a 6th or 7th for a reliable kicking veteran. but understand the earlier release was good for Hauschka - he has more time to find a team.
  5. https://mobile.twitter.com/SalSports/status/12989879829138595 McD says they may keep 2 kickers. nice call OP
  6. Pats HAVE to rework his contract, no? DPOY playing without a penny guaranteed? pre opt outs - Pats had an excuse not to up the money - cap funk. now they have tons of money - shd give him 4 years 70+ mill with 45 mill guaranteed. liked how Beane has been ahead of these situations with Hughes, Poyer etc.
  7. Boom: And right on cue Bills work out 3 DBs!! Gotta hand it Beane - he doesnt miss a beat!! https://buffalonews.com/sports/bills/bills-bring-in-three-cornerbacks-for-tryouts/article_f50cddce-e723-11ea-8cb2-f7da4e9c8ba5.html
  8. pretty sure browns were not the only team to put in a claim - maybe even Beane did - but lower claim priority did us in maybe the fins were attempting to pinch pennies - i think waive to IR you may have to play the player less than direct IR
  9. please. maybe you misspoke. they are in different tiers just based on last year. Norman is hoping he gets back to his better years in McD’s scheme. 2019 stats show him to be a washed up has been. Ryan is coming off a career year and is a top 10 zone CB in the league. mgk makes a more valid point - that we can’t afford another 10 mill for a CB at this juncture. I agree. But given the market, Ryan may take 5 mill plus incentives. he is a scheme fit, can cover inside and outside and brings safety position versatility as well. maybe worth it at 5 mill + incentives esp if it looks like we won’t be on the hook for incentive pay to josh norman.
  10. He was the best player on the field whether lined up inside or outside when the Bills played the titans last year. https://www.musiccitymiracles.com/2019/10/8/20905243/logan-ryan-was-sensational-in-week-5-against-the-bills
  11. yes his agent put out stats comparing him to the top safeties (and he does look good in comparison) but that was likely because there were more safety openings than CB openings - though both are relatively scarce. i actually think Ryan’s versatility will be a plus for us - he can back up Poyer as well. Right now Cleveland’s DB group is decimated and they are front runners for signing a DB. But after that not many openings.
  12. These are strange times - it will take 5-6 days of Covid protocol for a player to join practices even after signing. With Gaines opting out and now Norman’s lingering hamstring issue - is it time we started the process on Logan Ryan? The Jets game is less than 3 weeks away. Ryan, like Norman, is a perfect zone coverage DB. He will be a misfit in many man coverage schemes but fits the McD / Frazier scheme to a T. He was asking 10 mill, then had reportedly dropped it to 7-8 million - but now maybe available for 5 mill plus incentives. https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/2020/06/16/the-nfls-best-cornerbacks-in-zone-coverage/3/ Edit: And right on cue Bills work out 3 DBs!! Gotta hand it Beane - he doesnt miss a beat!! https://buffalonews.com/sports/bills/bills-bring-in-three-cornerbacks-for-tryouts/article_f50cddce-e723-11ea-8cb2-f7da4e9c8ba5.html
  13. Since a certain HOFer whose name starts with Aug and ends with gie asked .. (i did not focus on the commentary but just watched the TC action - i think most self respecting Bills fans and esp. those on this board know all the key Bills narratives better than the NFLN guys -the graphics were alternatively good and bad for Allen - only second QB with 30 PTD and 15 RTD in first two season (Newton) was followed by showing JA’s passer rating (59.7) on the long ball) started slow - 1. when the camera panned to the TC, camera focused on the QB group - Allen, Barkley and Webb all in red jerseys - but surprise no #10 Jake Fromm - but Allen made a few short warm up throws while Barkley and Webb were just standing around. Knox and Singletary were the guys catching those little flicky throws from Allen. 2. Allen appeared to have a wrist issue in his throwing hand - kept shaking it and then asked a trainer to stretch it for him - something to keep an eye on- he does use his wrist a lot in his throws. But did not appear lingering as of now - he appeared fine later. 3. camera panned to Tre and the DB group practicing catching drills - generally this group was more energetic and active compared to other groups 4. WR group - Foster in a non contact red jersey. Hedging is clearly bigger than the other WRs. But a lot of standing around 5. camera panned back to DBs - now we’re going through drills involving punching balls out of ball carriers’ hands 6. saw the Oline in the background - also appeared to be active with their drills 7. also saw Jason Croom (#80) do some blocking drills - guy looked super healthy and active and was driving his opponent backward- unclear if he was with the WR group or the OL group. Also had a brief Jake Fromm sighting but he was not with the other 3 QBs. 8. camera went back to non Bills teams - focused on Cam Newton with the Pats - don’t believe a word Belichick says - there is no QB competition - barring injury it is Cam’s job to lose - that he was THE guy was obvious 9. Back to Bills - Showed Allen going thru QB keeper drills - focus was on ball protection - loved that - that was something Allen needed to improve 10. why do the staff’s t-shirts still say Playoff Caliber - shd change em to championship caliber or something - don’t know why that pissed me off 11. Was it a hot day? Allen made a couple of throws and then needed to wipe his hands with a towel. 12. Overall, I felt the non DB Bills were not showing much urgency - other TCs like Dallas, Baltimore, even Pats players were more energetic - may have been because it was particularly hot. Will post summaries for rest of the day later.
  14. Stewart and Williams were first rounders who were paid top dollar in an era without a rookie wage scale. Singletary and Moss are 3rd round picks on team friendly deals. And RB salaries have fallen so much relative to other positions that they are rarely salary cap busters. The fact that we are comparing the play of a cost controlled Moss and Singletary to an expensive duo like Stewart and Williams (the panthers went 12-4 with Jake Delhomme! and these two RBs in 2008) only appears to show Beane knows what he is doing, no?
  15. there have been a few instances of multiple RBs from one team rushing for 1000 yards - i remember Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams doing that for the Panthers about a decade ago. Maybe a more recent and better example of two RBs coexisting and doing well was Ingram and Kamala for the Saints in 2018. Moss reminds me of Ingram and Singletary reminds me of Kamara. Kamara had nearly 1600 yards from scrimmage (nearly 900 yds rushing) and Ingram ran for an additional 645 in just 12 games. Together they formed an effective 1-2 punch that carried the team to a super bowl berth 9were deprived by a refereeing error).
  16. NFL Network has 9 hrs of Inside Training Camp Live tomorrow from 10 am to 7 pm ET. Bills are one of three teams featured. Given we are starved of TC coverage this season, thought you guys might like to know - so you can set your DVRs.
  17. Dont rule out Seattle trading for him. He was / is perfect for their lone safety defensive scheme and will come a lot cheaper since the Ravens have paid his sign on bonus. WHat he did at the back allowed Chancellor to be aggressive - will similarly allow them to deploy Jamal Adams near the LOS. From a football point of view - makes too much sense.
  18. two kickers with different strengths can work in some games - especially say you expect a low scoring battle against new england. two kickers and two punters though — ?? maybe if one of the punters can cover on special teams when the other is punting. but kudos for a real creative thought
  19. That is a valid consideration. When our talent cupboard was bare - like the 2018 and 19 offseasons, we had no hope for comp picks. The past offseason was a wash - coulda gone either way - for example, we coulda gotten picks for Phillips and Lawson - but we had to replace em and more importantly, they werent gonna be 3rd or 4th rounders. I think our team is reasonably set at enough positions that we actually would be unlikely to sign a whole bunch of free agents next offseason. Also, that decision (to sign lower tier FAs) is endogenous to the comp pick we are getting. Just hypothetically, if Ngakoue does play really well to command a hefty salary and we dont want to pay that - we might forego signing lower tier FAs early in the period to preserve our comp pick. Hey, FWIW, we might even let Milano walk if there is no extension and he commands a big enough salary that we are getting a comp pick back. At least one writer considers him a top 25 FA in 2021. https://www.nfl.com/news/top-25-nfl-free-agents-in-2021-prospective-class-teeming-with-talent
  20. Beane has actually structured the contracts we gave out this year quite smartly. We can walk away from Addison, Butler, Jefferson and Hughes quite easily after this year. So can easily pay a DE top dollar next year. All the opt outs have given us cap room to play with this year. IMO, the real debate we should be having is not really about fitting Ngakoue under the cap next year - it is whether he makes our team better this year. Just saying.
  21. The Seattle fans were all gaga about comp picks when the Clowney trade went down. See for example, https://www.nbcsports.com/northwest/seattle-seahawks/analysis-seattle-seahawks-pull-heist-trade-jadeveon-clowney A more recent article talking about how Seattle would lose a comp pick if Clowney was not signed before a particular deadline. https://www.fieldgulls.com/2020/4/19/21226188/dont-expect-comp-picks-seattle-seahawks-2021-fant-jefferson-ifedi-clowney-irvin-shell-finney-mayowa In fact, there was a lot of talk that teams were deliberately delaying signing Clowney to avoid the Seahawks getting a comp pick. If my understanding is wrong, please do correct me.
  22. warning: comp pick post Well if he plays well enough to warrant a big payday, I dont see any harm in giving him one. Or alternatively, the Bills decide to let him walk to the money, in which case the Bills will have a 3rd round comp pick. So, IF we trade for Ngakoue with a 2nd rounder and he plays well, all we did was swap 2nd and 3rd round picks for a year of Ngakoue. I think, once the comp pick enters the calculations, one can immediately see that Ngakoue playing well can only be great news for the Bills. So if the Bills feel confident they can fit Ngakoueinto their system, they should be all over this deal if it only costs them a 2nd. The bigger concern should be whether Ngakoue will be a bust in which case it is a 2nd rounder for nothing. Based on the past 4 years, I think that possibility is not very high. Ngakoue has played well in a 4-3. He is a young Mario Addison who is excellent in pass defense, but a little suspect in run defense. Even in run defense, Ngakoue made big strides last season and I have confidence in McD / Frazier that they can bring out the best in him. I think the delay in Ngakoue getting traded may have to do with how much of his salary the Jags will pay (Houston paid half of Clowney's salary). SInce July 15 has passed, Jags' likely compensation for Ngakoue has dwindled since he will be a one year rental. They were stupid not to trade him before July 15. That being said, the comp pick alone will ensure a floor for his trade value - the Jags shd get at least a 2nd rounder outa the trade.
  23. cant have an agreement for an extension on a franchise tag after july 15. other than that minor hiccup, I agree with your post.
  24. Hmphh. Now who is making a mountain out of a molehill? ? No one said Tre's career will be ruined - but these considerations can mean the difference between a win and a loss in a close game, no?
