To me the best defensive stat (no single stat captures everything) is points allowed per drive. In 2018, the Bills were 19th in points allowed per drive.  To me this is a better indication of where the Bills defense performed in 2018   https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/drivestatsdef2018  .  That link shows the drive stat.

Not sure if you misread defensive chart but Bills were actually ranked 10th for Defensive Pts allowed per drive.

..FA spending has to meet the "89% Rule" under current CBA........

    Spending requirements

There is a minimum amount of money that a team can put towards their caps. All 32 teams are required to spend at least 89 percent of their caps (which projected for year 2019 is $187-$191 mil). This is called the minimum cash spend requirement, also known as the 89 percent rule.

As mentioned in my previous response the 89% rule is over 4 years.  Teams must spend 89% of total $ over 4 years, not every year per CBA.

Now first off.  I'm for cutting both of them due to lack of production and high costs.  But as I thought about it...a few points came to mind.

    1.  We are soooo young as a team. We had first and second year players playing more snaps than anyone in the league and we have 10 draft picks to get even younger.  With kyle retiring we have very little vet leadership left and McCoy is one of them.  We have Ivory/Dimarco (a captain btw)  as a backup and FB to help young RB room if Shady is let go - my guess is he stays unless there are more shenanigans on his part going forward.  As for Clay, surprised he passed year end physical as thought we might have forced retirement.  Don't see him coming back.

    2.  Are we really going to be able to spend 90M in cap space?  Let alone 100 if we cut these guys?  There aren't that many big free agents we can get at positions of need to eat up that much space.   So why cut 2 vets to save space when we can have them play out their next year and then take them off books when we need more space. There is a belief that NFL teams must spend 89 percent of the salary cap to be in compliance with the new collective bargaining agreement. That is both simultaneously correct and incorrect. The rule does not apply to a singular season for teams, but applies to an aggregate total  over the course of four seasons.  So we will not be obligated to spend $84mm - the current room - or more if guys get cut and we realize savings.

    3.  Supporting cast was terrible so having allen with another year under his belt and a better oline might make these guys better.  I would never increase HP and torque and leave the old tires and brakes on a car - we need a huge upgrade at TE and another RB who can platoon with Shady or Ivory.  See Michel/White for Pats.

    4.  Chance we could get something for them mid year.  So we aren't cap strapped so keep them and see what happens.  A few teams needed backs this year and clay could fetch something for a team in need next year.  Clay's worst ability is his availability.  His drop vs Miami in end zone was indicative of how much his athletic ability has plummeted.  Based on Beane end of season non-mention of him - he is already a goner.  No one will trade for these salaries btw.

    5.  They could restructure and have less of a cap impact.  Now you're talking - only hope for Clay.

    6.  Mentors for draft picks.  These guys could groom their replacements for a year since we will likely draft both a TE and RB.   Players play, Coaches coach.  We are not paying 2 guys 1/10th of our salary cap to mentor other players.

I'm all for cutting dead weight but the lack of vets on a very young team that will be drafting someone in these positions might make it compelling to keep them especially since money isnt an issue this year.   Our coaching staff must get us back in playoffs next year or at least finish with winning record again.  If they feel pocketing $10mm by cutting these 2 and securing their replacements or other key FA vets (OL, DT, Edge, CB, WR) with the money makes more sense, then that will be the decision.

    Thoughts?

4.5 in dead cap money...why not keep him as your #2?

    1.  Cuz he can't stay healthy and is no longer an impact player given injuries

    2.  Cuz we only have $2.5mm in dead cap as of now next year and still save $5mm in 2019 cap by cutting him.

    RBs can be found anywhere.

I never have used a simulator, i like going through the player rankings myself.

First Pick rates players by day of draft and allows you to view best available.  Can click on name and get draft profiles rankings etc.

    fun site to use

  5. Used First Pick simulator, no trades.  Like the other Josh Allen as can play behind Zo or replace him and can play DE in the 4-3 in pass situations.  Invest in 2 starter level OL and get a large Red Zone WR and a Bell Cow RB.   Alos add a large perimeter CB, a 3T  DL and some other depth at LB, TE and FB.

Your score is: 30745 (GRADE: A+)

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 9: Allen, Josh, OLB, Kentucky (A)
Round 2 Pick 9: Taylor, Jawaan, OT, Florida (A)
    Round 3 Pick 8: Arcega-Whiteside, JJ, WR, Stanford (A+)
Round 4 Pick 9: Singletary, Devin, RB, Florida Atlantic (A+)
Round 4 Pick 31: Austin, Blessuan, CB, Rutgers (A+)
Round 5 Pick 4: Wise, Daniel, DT, Kansas (A+)
    Round 5 Pick 9: McCoy, TJ, C, Florida (A+)
Round 6 Pick 9: Quarterman, Shaquille, ILB, Miami (FL) (A+)
Round 7 Pick 9: Crum, Micky, TE, Louisville (A+)
Round 7 Pick 16: Aston, George, FB, Pittsburgh (A+)

    Using Drafttek

    1. WR DK Metcalf 6'4" 225 Ole Miss

    2. OT David Edwards 6'7" 315 Wisconsin

    3. OG Chris Lyndstrom 6'3" 307 Boston College

    4. TE TJ Hockenson 6'4" 250 Iowa

    4. DT Olive Sagapolu 6'2" 345 Wisconsin

    5. DE Chase Winovich 6'3" 245 Michigan

    5. CB Rock Ya-Sin 6'2" 190 Temple

    6. OLB Ben Burr-Kiven 6'0" 221 Washington

    7. Punter Mitch Wishnowsky 6'2" 220 Utah

    7. TE Jace Sternberger 6'4" 250 Tex A&M

Like the top 4, but I would go Jonah Williams OT in Rd1 as I think Metcalf could be had at pick 41 given injury concerns.  Also any DT picked should be a 3T as we don't really have one now (Jordan Philips could play there if re-signed).  Good work here

Step 1:  Bills trade down in the first and pick up an extra 2nd.

Step 2:  Draft TE Fant in the First after the trade down.

Step 3:  Trade Bills 2nd round pick, and our 3rd for Antonio Brown (or even Julio).

Step 4:  Use our 2nd round pick on BPA, likely OL, RB, WR, CB.

Essentially, our overall cost for Antonio is essentially just our 3rd and a small trade down in the 2nd (given we would still have a 2nd rounder from our first round trade down).  And honestly, if in this scenario the Steelers insisted on both 2nd's (ours plus the one we picked up) then I would do it as well as again, net cost of AB would really just be our current 2nd round pick.

We likely would have also signed at least one FA WR to go along with recent signing of Williams (which I liked).

    Enter Camp with:

    QB - Allen

    TE - Fant

    WR1 - Brown (or Julio)

    WR2 - Foster

WR3 - FA (like Humphries) we sign or Zay/Williams

    WR4 - Zay/Williams

WR5 and WR6 - McKenzie and some other young guy.

And quite honestly, Williams feels like a strong wild card who could potentially contend for WR2 and Foster could be a WR3 slot weapon.  Now you got speed on the outside in Brown with a guy with a big catch radius in Williams and Foster torching people from the slot.  But before anything, we need to see Williams show some of that potential on an NFL field where he is starting from a stand still position each snap.

While Bills may trade down I cannot see them using 1st Rd Pick on a TE.  Especially on the 2nd best TE coming out of Iowa per some scouts.

Neither do I see this management trading 2 picks in top 75 for a 31 year old malcontent who drew lines in the sand with a future HOF QB.  What would AB do to Allen if he felt dissed?

Beane has already stated their philosophy.  Build through the draft and retain your own.  Look where they have made draft investments.  This year could be OT, WR, Edge, DT and CB.  They will draft at expensive positions and sign FAs at the less expensive positions C, OG, TE, LB IMHO.

IMO, Jordan can be a decent situational 3T, but I wouldn't want to rely on him over the course of a season. Harry has not shown to be explosive enough off the ball to play the position. It's a need.

Agreed.  Neither Jordan ( if retained) or Harry have the quick get off, hand fighting skills or pass rush savvy of Kyle.

If Tampa releases Gerald McCoy or ATL let's Jarrett go they would be targets.  There are some young 3 technique DTs that will be FAs too Philon, LAC.  Covington HOU.  Jefferson SEA.

Quinne n Williams and Ed Oliver are the 3T poster boys in the draft and are likely top 1/3 picks in Rd 1.

  9. Good piece from Buffalo Rumblings on the likelihood including math involved.

Author mistakenly thought Josh was in scoreboard end not the tunnel end last SUN.

i think he has to try tunnel end in the spaces between the suites and admin bldg - less wind issues
